Indivara was sprawled in a comfortable chair, her feet soaking in a tub of cool water, filled with pretty smelling oils that anyone but Val would definitely be stupid enough to tease her about. They helped with the swelling, though, which Indivara swore had not gone down since the day of the Touching, and that was like a week ago or something! Honestly, as she leaned back lazily and waited for Val to get back with their food, Indivara wondered what had possessed her to think she could do this Weyrlingmaster thing while in the last trimester of her pregnancy. Not that she’d ever back down or admit it was getting the best of her, not even to Val, though he could see her struggling when she got home at night.
A firelizard appearing had both of Indivara’s screeching, Queenie in outrage and Saph squealing a greeting, which caused the other lizard to drop the note it was carrying and flee. Indivara sighed, and thanked Val’s little blue when he brought it over for her. Saph was sulking that a potential playmate had left him and Queenie was grumbling to herself about someone coming uninvited into her domain. Indivara flicked the piece of paper over to read the message the same time Val came back in, and the dragons all started humming. Indivara groaned softly and frowned at Val. “At least its not dawn?” She mumbled, sighing dramatically and holding her hands out beseechingly to Val, kissing him happily when he helped her to stand up.
She was never doing this pregnancy thing again. Ever. Ever. Ever.
Waddling off to find some pants to wear, since she was only really wearing one of Val’s shirts, Indivara got dressed in reasonable time, sulking to herself as she stamped her feet into her boots and then had to beg Val to do them up for her, because she couldn’t see her feet past her belly, never mind doing up the laces. Mostly she was wearing sandals or going barefoot when she could get away with it, but spending the next umpteen hours on the Sands in sandals sounded like a really stupid idea! By the time she was ready, Venseth had already gone down to the Sands to help keep the Candidates that were there in line while Indivara caught a ride down with Val and Veeth.
With Val and Veeth both accommodating her to help her down off the small blue dragon, Indivara took a moment to catch her breath and find her balance, leaning against the pale hide while Venseth proudly updated her on the candidates – almost all of whom he’d told to go bathe first, and to find some snacks if needed. Most folks had already eaten, but Indivara’s constant snacking due to her pregnancy had caught on with some of the class, and she’d made allowances that her Candidates could eat nuts and berries while in class; she had no issue with them snacking on such things on the Sands, since dragonets weren’t about to smell the scents of berries and go into a murderous fury as they tried to find the source of the food.
… right?
Leaving Venseth to keep control of the Candidates as they came back to the Sands in dribs and drabs, most of them still with wet hair and wild looking faces, Indivara settled herself carefully on one of Veeth’s forelegs, leaning back against the dragon and chatting idly with Val as they waited for the actual Hatching to begin. No one but the two blue dragons, and her mate, would be able to see how terrified Indivara was; the only good experience she’d ever had with a Hatching was when Venseth Hatched – and in all honesty, that was quickly being drowned down by all the mayhem and murder she’d been around both before and since. Indivara sincerely hoped this Hatching wouldn’t be anything like the one she’d heard happened in Ista.
Probably the only positive thing about her damned pregnancy was the fact that it had prevented her from going. Not that she probably would have. But she might have.
