Xyxyth had watched the Weyrleader approach with a strange woman he didn’t recall having the pleasure of meeting before. He stood at attention when M’ris approached their little group and nodded in greeting before paying full attention to the man. He liked M’ris; found the man to be charming in his own ways and he could be a good role model for A’tay, once the boy stopped staring at his toes so much and focused on what was around him and what he could be.
Hearing Xyliah’s name, Xyxyth perked up even more and nearly pranced after Faxxonth to meet the woman. He watched the way the Faxxonth played with the curly hair and chuckled, finding it all to be harmless fun and then plopped himself down on the other side of Xyliah. Our names are similar, Xyliah! I’m Xyxyth! he greeted her just before Nerreh stepped in with an apology. Should he tone down the friendliness as well? He hadn’t nudged her yet, which he wanted to do but was trying not to overwhelm the woman so he thought he was doing okay so far. A’tay didn’t seem to mind either as a glance to his mate saw the boy just getting to his feet and coming over to join the party.
A’tay hadn’t spent as much time at his Aunt Eridella’s like T’ryn had but it had been enough to prepare him for an excited Lady. Eridella admittedly didn’t dance on the spot in excitement –that he had seen anyway, but maybe she did—but she was pretty outstanding and kept him on his toes with some of her comments. She also had some eccentric children and visitors so a woman excited to see dragons didn’t seem too scary after some of the encounters he had made it through.
He laid a hand on Xyxyth’s side when he reached his dragon. The creature kept growing! He was still the largest in his class and every time A’tay felt like the beast had stopped for a while, they woke up to complaints of itchiness as he grew again. It was odd to see him at such a size now when he had been so tiny upon hatching, which both seemed like a million years ago and yesterday all rolled into one. “Nice to meet you, Lady Xyliah. I’m A’tay and that’s Nerreh. You may regret stopping at this group. I swear these two are the most curious and excited dragons in the clutch.”
I like her. Can I call her Xylith? Xyxyth had been studying Xyliah as A’tay spoke, taking her measure and deciding she was a good person and she would be nice to have around. You are now Xylith, companion of Xyxyth. She liked dragons and seemed to have enough energy to fuel a dragon –maybe she was one in disguise!—so she deserved a dragon’s name. That only he could use, of course. What was the point of special nicknames if everyone used them?
