Phinarion hadn’t meant to keep his relation to V’ler a secret! It was just, the longer he took to introduce himself to his uncle, the more awkward he became about the whole idea. It wasn’t as if no one knew – pretty much all the candidates knew he was the bluerider’s nephew, and he had been the butt of no shortage of teasing about the Weyrlingmaster being his aunt… wasn’t that awkward? And neither of them knew. Phinarion just couldn’t bring himself to step up and introduce himself after all this time and really… everyone else had figured it out, maybe they were just ignoring the fact that he looked like he could be his uncle’s twin? Could they really be that oblivious?
Considering the way Indivara was eyeballing them all and barking out instructions, Phinarion doubted that she wasn’t aware because she wasn’t sharp enough. Maybe it was because she was pregnant and she just didn’t realise? Maybe… Shrugging to himself and watching as the other Candidates began weaving through the eggs, Phinarion considered his options, joining the rest of them in wandering through them all. None of them really called out to him, though, and Phinarion realised about fifteen minutes later that most of his fellows were on to their second or third egg, and he still hadn’t even Touched his first one yet!
Maybe he was being too fussy? Was it weird that he was waiting for an egg that really stood out to him? How could one stand out, though, when they were all pretty much the same?
Sighing dramatically, Phinarion turned sharply to the left and approached the first egg he spotted as a result. Stopping before it, he studied the remarkably unremarkable egg for several moments before leaning forward just enough to press the palms of both hands firmly to the shell, his face a picture of concentration as he waited to see what this egg had in store for him. It wasn’t his first Touching, and the odds were it wouldn’t be his last (seriously, how big was the class!?) but Phinarion was still unsure how it was any given egg would react to him.
Heartache.
