Quinvalis realised after a few moments of silence that he really was the first one to go to this egg and as he felt the inhabitant stirring against his mind, he couldn't help the smile that came. Someone was happy to see him and it felt like the dragonet hadn't been expecting anyone. Quinvalis knew that feeling. Sometimes he felt like he didn't belong in the Weyr no matter how much time he had already spent there or how much he helped out and made some friends. It was ingrained in him from an early age with his uncle taking over the farm that should have been his to his cousins in the tavern starting to get a bit rough and view him as competition for their cozy inheritance. So when someone was nice to him or simply noticed him, it always surprised him.
He laughed softly as the enthusiasm from the dragonet seemed to grow and he did his best to project happy thoughts and show how much he was happy to meet the little guy --or girl, it was odd how there was a consciousness there but nothing else could be pinned down. "If I had to Impress in Telgar, I think I would like it to be to you," Quinvalis confided quietly, not at all finding it weird that he was now talking aloud to an egg. Even if his voice wasn't heard, the sentiment would have been felt, right?
"I guess I should go, give others the chance to meet you," he didn't want to go, but he had to. Quinvalis had a feeling he had spent too much time on the one egg as it was, having caught glimpses of the other boys moving around him to get to new eggs. "Even if we aren't a match, I'll keep my eye out for you. I wonder if you'll remember me, though?" Dragons had short memories and one that wasn't even hatched yet would no doubt have no recollection of him, right? That was horribly depressing and he didn't want to leave the excited fella on that note!
So he brought up some memories of his mom and sister laughing and playing which in turn made him smile again as he whispered a farewell, feeling the mutual sadness, and removed his hand. The instant loss of that connection almost hurt, but Quinvalis made himself walk away from the egg before he put his hand back. Had a Candidate ever been obsessed with an egg before and refused to leave? What had happened? Did they bond? His luck would have the dragonet hatch and walk right by him to someone else and that would suck even more than the loss of the touch.
He supposed he could just call it quits and sit out the rest of the time but what if there were other eggs that had been overlooked and needed a friend for a few minutes? Quinvalis took a moment to survey the lot and when he found an egg that seemed a bit malformed with a dent in it, he knew that was his next target and moved around other eggs and people to get to it, laying his hand on the dent, showing he didn't mind the imperfection.
