Vessaelia had been waiting weeks for this day! Of course it wasn't nearly as important as the actual Hatching, but she was excited to see the gold egg and greet the little lady. Some of the dragonriders and weyrfolk believed that the Touching was what shaped the dragon and helped form the bond. Honestly, it seemed a little hokey to her, especially with the boys who got to mingle with as many eggs as they could in the small amount of time allotted to them. It wasn't like the boy that touched four eggs was going to Impress to four dragons! He might not even Impress to any of those. Maybe he would Impress to one he ignored. A'dis told her not to over think it, and she really wasn't. This wasn't her first Touching, though she didn't get to Stand that often thanks to two out of three Weyrs only allowing women on the Sands when there was a golden egg--which she was fine with! She wanted so very badly to Impress to a gold, even more so now that she was dating --was it dating? -- a bronzerider.
A wonderful, perfect, handsome bronzerider...
She was daydreaming again and chided herself about it, not because she missed Indivara's retelling of the rules but because she missed her chance at being first in line. She wanted to make a good impression on the young gold, show she was punctual and well-poised, and just very agreeable to the position of goldrider. She practiced all of that by standing tall, not talking, and ignoring the chatter around her between a couple of other girls about how they were totally going to sneak in at least one touch each on another egg.
Wait, what?
That was so scandalous! Not that she was one to talk. She liked to be in the right place at the right time when the Flight losers were randy and in need of someone. Not that she really mothed anymore thanks to A'dis. But really! Why break the rules just to touch an egg? Sure, she really wanted to bond with this gold but even if she did want any old colour, she wouldn't risk being kicked out of the Hatching entirely for a sneaky touch.
Some people had no sense of priority.
The girl in front of her finally moved away and Vessaelia took a deep breath and exhaled as she closed the gap between her and the precious egg. With a smile, Vessaelia greeted the egg with a softly whispered, 'hello, dear one,' and laid her hand against the shell.
