Mylorah paced up and down the hall that led to N’mor’s weyr. She had practically rushed to his door when she found the piece of paper on T’ryn’s mess of a desk when she had been searching for a blank scrap to send a message to a friend in Telgar. She didn’t mean to read it; well, not all of it. Well, not until names kept catching her eye and key words that marked some sort of confession. Did her brother fancy someone? The answer was yes, yes he did. It didn’t seem like a new crush, though. It actually looked more like an apology than a love confession. Guilt saw her shoving it back in the pile and she quickly moved away from the desk all together before T’ryn returned to the room.
But during the rest of their visit, she kept thinking about what she read, despite the numerous times she chided herself for invading her brother’s privacy. She would have let it go entirely, if not for the way things were phrased. It sounded like he had written it shortly after breaking up with Casa and then never sent it. Had he chickened out? That wasn’t like T’ryn at all! Actually, yes it was. If people knew anything about the R’nd Kids, they knew they all had daddy issues and confidence issues. T’ryn probably feared being rejected all over again and decided not to risk it. He’d rather be miserable than utterly destroyed for what she suspected would be a third time. He took the break up with Casa and fight with N’mor hard and the poor kid needed something to boost him back up.
The fact that he had kept the letter gave Mylorah hope that T’ryn still debated sending it to N’mor. Then again, it was probably just lost in the mess. He was so clever and could organise wings for the fires –something he had confided to her; M’ris had used his drawn up ideas and Mylorah hadn’t seen him that happy and proud in a long time—but his actual organizational skills sucked. A lot. Everyone teased her about being absent-minded at times but at least she, usually, knew where everything was!
So when he was busy getting them another drink, Mylorah had quickly grabbed the letter, folded it, and shoved it into a pocket. He might kill her later, especially if everything went to hell, but she was too confident that the power of friendship –and love-- would have N’mor react positively.
She stopped pacing in front of the door. It was time to stop doubting herself yet again and just deliver it. And that’s all she would do. Staying to see his reaction wouldn’t be right. What if he was disgusted or angry? Worse, what if he put on a show for her one way or the other and she left thinking he was happy when he was going to yell at T’ryn? Maybe she should wait anyway. Stop him if he was upset. Tell him to cool down before saying something he didn’t mean.
Maybe she shouldn’t meddle more than she was already doing because she had just knocked and it was too late to turn back now. Then again, she could say she missed him, steal a hug, and leave. He’d believe that.
No, he was getting the letter, and she knew she was right to do this. Those two were meant to be together, even if only as best friends. They just needed a little nudge from their big sister—and she smiled as she included N’mor as one of her brothers. Her crush on him was long over and while she still teased him sometimes, she really did see him more as family.
“Hi, N’mor!” She greeted, chipper as always with all traces of fear gone. “I found something T’ryn obviously forgot to give to you. You know how messy he can be.” She gave a little hand wave as if that helped explain everything before handing over the folded piece of paper.
“I know this breaks your heart, but I can’t stay. I’ll catch up with you later, though!” She blew him a kiss and skipped down the hall until she was out of sight.
