Onari recognized that vague slip. Don't dig deeper, it said, and Onari was well acquainted with decorum enough to know better than to pry. Everyone had their secrets. If they were meant to be known, then they would be. But what little Dessa had allowed to slip was bolstering enough. It was possible to start over, because she'd done it. If she'd done it, then many others before her had done so too.
It would just be a matter of time and a matter of resources.
Maybe this run in had been more of a blessing than Onari had realized. Perhaps she could extend this employment in Dessa's shop for the long term. Maybe she'd be able to afford lodging for her and her daughter. Maybe she'd be able to give Nlani the life she deserved. The one she never got to have for herself.
That's what mothers were supposed to do, right?
Absently, her arms wrapped tighter about Nlani's prone, sleeping form. She planted a kiss on the girl's temple, and the child shifted into her, grumbling in her slumber.
"Thank you, Dessa," she murmured. "Really. Thank you. I don't know how I'll ever pay you back for this. But I'll try."
