It was time for that lie.
Though, admittedly, staring into Dessa's delicate, sincere, ridiculously kind features, she couldn't help but feel a little pang of guilt.
But there was no need for it, right? She wasn't part of this woman's life. In short time, she and Nlani would be on their way. Their paths would diverge, and the two would be nothing more than an amusing memory for the woman in the future. Yet all the same...
"I have to warn you," the words trickled out of her mouth, stumbling and uncertain. The sort of words that seemed to wither only a few inches out. "I don't want to... bring my problems to your doorstep, as it were. My husband -- her father -- he wasn't... he's..." Her eyes closed and, drawing her shoulders back, she grit her teeth against the next sentence. "We had to get away from that."
When Onari's eyes fluttered open once more, she felt the unintended sting of fresh tears at her eyes. She hadn't meant to, but she had reached to something deep. It wasn't a bad touch for the deception, at least. It lent credence to her sense of desperation. "But I don't know if he's looking for us. That's why we're trying to keep moving. I wouldn't want to burden you with that. You've been so generous already."
