"Get off him."
I like him. Why should I? He's almost as good as you.
"He's not me."
Are you jealous? the dragonet's dark voice nearly purred with amusement. While she didn't actually purr, Erisi was pretty sharding sure that she at least was trying to.
"No."
He's not you, you know. And you are mine.
"Then why are you on his chest? You're sitting on his sharding chest!"
Are you upset? She was sharding purring. The lithe green dragonet was practically preening as she remained perched on Valerian's chest. At least she wasn't so large as to crush the other Candidate's ribs. Her attention to Valerian was relatively harmless, and likely contributed to the small amount of glee that she got from seeing her new bonded complain.
"Not if you get off his chest."
I am almost sorry. He is nice, but you are far better.
"Charath," he hissed her name with limited patience. Erisi had no idea how he had ended up in this situation, with a wicked little dragonet talking in an almost unnaturally dark and hoarse voice in his head. Charath's earlier approach had nearly frightened him, considering the tendency to tear into Candidates that some of her siblings had developed. The way she had avoided the pool of Indivara's blood shined some hope for his safety, but that thought had been quickly wiped clean out of his mind as Charath practically tackled Valerian onto the ground. His friend clearly wasn't hurt, and when Charath's eyes whipped over to him his anxiety and fear had dissolved.
It wasn't any romantic sharding crap like that. It was just, well, he had some things to worry about now. Actually, it was just one thing, and she was already demanding. Fine, if you insist. The dragonling gently climbed off of Valerian, giving him another considering look, as if lamenting over the loss of a suitable Candidate for herself. Really, Erisi was better, but if she could have had both, there was little doubt that she would have decided to. What Erisi had failed to realize, during their entire conversation, was that her tail was wrapped around his calves, and the moment she climbed off of him her tail tightened around his legs. He didn't have time to even yell her name to scold her before he was flat on his back on the sands.
And there Charath was, looming over him, dark laughter echoing in his mind. Her body even shook with the glee she gleamed from her bonded's minor suffering. Will it make you feel better if I sit on your chest? Before he could answer, or even sit up, she proceeded to do just that, satisfied with a clear victory over her bonded. Apparently, while they would eventually make it to the side of the Hatching Sands to get Charath properly fed, it was going to take a while.
"CHARATH." was the only thing Erisi groaned out from underneath his dragonet.
