Unlike Farlint, Jada was intimate enough with the figure that was being mauled that she knew, and she screamed, not caring if it attracted the dragonet's attention. Indi wasn't supposed to be on the Sands! Shards! She broke the line as Indi shrieked, turning towards her young friend; and that was why when the dragonet spun, possibly seeing in her the loud noise, or another target... it flung itself her way. If she had been closer, it could have been worse. Jada flung up her arms, tried to make herself small, balling up her hands into fists to protect them as well; claws raked her forearms like knives, and she felt warmth trickling down her skin. Blood, her own, mixing with Indi's blood that had been on the dragonet's claws, and the sand that had been gathered as the small beast had fallen, gotten up, fallen and then flung itself in Jada's direction.
Blood was good, Jada thought inanely. It cleaned the wound, didn't it?
The Hatchling hissed and Jada pushed to her feet, forcefully shoving the rest of the way to Indivara. The child was crumpled, but the screams were silent, at last. There was blood everywhere, a metallic stink hat the Harper wasn't trained to deal with. Her face went pale and she was hard-pressed to keep herself from vomiting. "Indi? Indi?" she pulled the girl upright, and was glad to see that the child was breathing, that her heart was still beating. Were the wounds deep? What could she do? She reached down, tugging at her robe. Where were the healers? Were they coming?
White cloth tore, and Jada grabbed Indi's hand, pushing white cloth into it. "Press this to your face, honey, as hard as you dare." She heard a sickening crack from behind her, but didn't turn to look; didn't see the girlishly handsome man fall to the Sands. She was more worried about what was in front of her- and if his situation was worse, well, they'd get to him first. Before she could rip her robe any more, a Healer was there, pulling her and her self-appointed charge to their feet and tugging them to the edge of the Sands.
The Harper started shaking when she looked down at her arms. Thank goodness. It wasn't her hands. She needed those to live. Amber eyes went to the Sands, to the blood-soaked places where Indivara and- Farlint? Oh, poor man.- had been standing. To the dragonets on the Sands.
Jada smiled wanly, then hissed as they cleaned away the blood to gauge her wounds. Not too deep. A numbweed salve, and a bandage, then she got to return to her friend's side, anxious for the verdict on Indivara.
Note: I got the okay from Homey to PP Indi some in this.
