Oh man. Oh man oh man oh man. Farlint was ready to roll, and these eggs were cracking far too slow to keep up with the way Farlint's blood was pumping. Were just too slow! The first Hatchling broke free, and Far tried to remember if it was one that he had touched. He really couldn't remember, because his mind was in a whirl. So much, and the Candidate hadn't been ready for the flurry. His silver eyes darted from one egg to another, widening as-
As a Hatchling bumped into him, a nose digging into his- whoa there! too close!- thigh, Farlint ached to reach out and touch the wee little creature. Shard it all, it was too dark! He could hardly see the little wherry, even as he gently pushed (with his leg, not his hand), trying to urge the small creature to its feet, and get it to- ow- stop digging its claws into of his leg!! Ah, there- at last the little thing let go of him, and Far watched him go, a pang in his chest. Not at all as graceful as its older brethren, but all the more charming for the fact that it was graceless and awkward, with big eyes that lit up with a rainbow joy as a woman rushed towards it.
The lump that rose in his throat wasn't jealousy, but he couldn't define what it was exactly. Another Hatchling wandered over to a couple other candidates, and he tried to narrow his eyes to see better. For him it was almost instantaneous, one dragon, turning into many others, all awkward and gangly. He stared around, feeling his hands jitter. And then another was there, sniffing at his robe, and his breath caught again as he met the dragon's gaze- and was overlooked, in favor of a boy next to him.
Why had he thought he wouldn't be nervous?
