R’nd had been having trouble sleeping the past few nights and unfortunately it wasn’t due to his time being spent in enjoyable manners. The upcoming Hatching was of course on everyone’s mind since the clutching but with every day that passed and the more classes that Kerrin took in preparation in case he Impressed, R’nd started to worry. It didn’t help that the weyrbrat had to point out that day at the lake that he would Impress and wanted to fly with the bluerider. Now, under the stress of all the drama lately, interesting dreams were starting to take shape until they morphed from innocent and pleasing with his friend Impressing blue or green to traumatizing nightmares of Kerrin on brown, or worse, bronze.
He had woken up in a cold sweat the night before after Kerrin, laughing maniacally, atop a large bronze dragon stood next to an unknown gold and her rider. He was weyrleader and everyone looked panicked. Katila was doomed! A fear that he was having a vision that would come to pass kept R’nd awake for the remainder of the night. He certainly didn’t want to see that again and he had somehow convinced himself that if he didn’t dream it, it wouldn’t come to pass.
Instead he had taken solace in a bottle of wine while trying to think of anything other than the hatching which led Ayyonth to question his rider constantly about his mental state and refusing to fly between until R’nd started acting normally again. Luckily for them both that happened shortly after a midday meal at the Dining Hall where properly cooked food and more klah sobered him up from the alcohol and his delirium. Soon after that, a nap seemed like a brilliant idea and it was possibly safe enough to give into that desire.
So it was a blissfully unconscious bluerider that woke with confusion and then panic when Ayyonth took up the humming and started pestering R’nd until he woke. It was time! Oh Faranth, his dreams really were prophetic, weren’t they. Still feeling slightly hungover from the bottle of wine and now fretting over what the night would bring with the Hatching, R’nd decided the only way to help slip out of his miserable state was for one more glass being chugged back before heading to his mirror to check his appearance, run fingers through his mess of sandy blonde locks, and head for Ayyonth.
Do you think Kerrin will Impress? Ayyonth knew that had been troubling R’nd for days and couldn’t resist asking on their flight to the Hatching Circuit as he still wouldn’t risk going between with his rider’s mind all over the place. Or any of the others you have spent time with recently? his laughter echoed in R’nd’s mind which earned him a smack to the back of the neck but it did little to dissuade the dragon. Kerrin will Impress. I have complete confidence that he will. I just worry about which crazy beast will do it. As to the others… I haven’t thought about it honestly.
Upon landing, R’nd dismounted, and patted Ayyonth affectionately before sending him off to find a spot to view the Hatching, not entirely surprised to see his blue seek out Larrikith. While he was tempted to do the same and find B’jin, R’nd instead focused on claiming a seat in the front where he would have the best view of the eggs and Kerrin. As the Candidates started to file out, more than a few looking familiar, R’nd noticed something that made him chuckle through his weariness; he really had ‘mingled’ with a lot of Candidates. No wonder Kerrin continued throwing hissy fits.
Oh well.
