General Appearance: In both height and build, Quintalis is average, perhaps even slightly below the expected standard. He has yet to fully shed his boyish shape that gives his face a boyish and, some would say, innocent baby face. His body shows a man that has lifted heavy objects in his life and doesn't over-eat at the table, showing just the slightest hint of a budding six pack.

Dressing Style: When he was helping at the tavern, he followed the code of practical yet trendy. Faranath forbid anyone think they were scraping the bottom of the social barrel or showed any reputable customer a rip or snare in a sleeve.

In his down time, Quinvalis preferred simple attire. Colour didn't matter to him and even the latest style meant nothing to him, so long as it fit, was clean, and comfortable.

Personality

General Character Traits: Quinvalis quietly struggles with depression, brought on by the loss of his father at a young age and being kicked out of the farm that should have one day been his. It was hard losing everything he had known to people he had always thought to be loving family but to then watch his mother wait tables and help in her family's tavern didn't help. He wanted the best for her but he couldn't do much as a child. As he got older, he tried to pick up more shifts when it came to cooking, cleaning, and even serving. When it became obvious his cousin might think of him as competition a true sense of insignificance and that he just wasn't worth anything.

Now, given his chance at possibly Impressing a dragon and having a life of his own, Quinvalis is very eager to prove his worth both as a Candidate and as a vital part of the Weyr. This desire intensifies when R'nya is around as he sees the bronzerider as a somewhat father figure but also the definition of a dragonrider. While he's not sure if it'd ever be likely that he'd be Weyrleader one day, let alone simply Impressing a bronze, Quinvalis is motivated to do his best and might even over extend himself in his attempts to show everyone he's not just some poor farmer's boy that had to grow up in a tavern.

He still has his moments of struggling with self-worth and if people truly like or appreciate him but Quinvalis adapts wherever he is and continues to try his best. Outside of chores and away from the watchful eyes of his superiors, Quinvalis relaxes a bit more and can be playful and can have fun with anyone he calls friend; which may only be a select few given his trust issues brought on by not knowing if anyone is plotting against him like most of his own family seemed to be.

Habits/Mannerisms: He is a neat-freak; constantly tidying up thanks to keeping his mother happy when he was younger and never feeling like the tavern was his home and he would be intruding if he was messy. He'll occasionally drag his feet when his mood is low.

Opinions:
Threadfall Theory: R'nya believes it'll come back and that's good enough for him.
Stealing/Kidnapping: Again, he is of the same opinion as R'nya that it was bad for their reputation but it was needed.
Firelizards: They're cool! He doesn't have one yet but he hopes to get an egg soon.
Return North: He's happy! He only had tales from older people about them but now he gets to see them and his mom is friends with a dragonrider!

Likes:
His necklace: It was his mother's and she gave it to him the day he was Searched, saying how proud she was of him. It's a simple thin chain with a small red gem on it. Quilriana has had it since she was a girl and says it's a piece of her heart going with him. Quinvalis never takes it off.
Sleep: He never seems to get enough. Growing up on a farm meant early rising. Helping in a tavern meant late to bed at times and early to rise to help prep food. Now, Weyr life has him getting up early for lessons or chores. One day he'll feel like he's getting enough.
Baths After a day of playing with or cleaning up horses, it inspires you to bathe daily. Working in a kitchen also has people ensuring you're at least washing your hands.

Dislikes:
Cats: It's not that he hates them but he's allergic and they make him sneeze and itch horribly.
Strategy: He's not that great at thinking a step or two ahead of the game. His mother always beat him in games like chess and even in lessons when he's given a problem to solve, Quinvalis struggles with thinking outside the box. He'd rather just get to the solution or location without plotting everything out.
Being Late: Quinvalis does his best to be on time or even a tad early. He feels it shows he's not interested in what he's showing up for if he's not punctual.

Strengths:
Hard-working: Quinvalis puts his all into what he does as he wants to take pride in what he produces.
Respectful: His mother made sure he always showed those older than him and in higher positions than him the proper respect they deserved. Not wanting to disappoint her, Quinvalis is always polite to those of higher rank than himself.
Great Listener: He may not be good at giving any advice, but he'll listen to everything you have to say in silent support of what's on your mind or he's simply paying attention to a lesson or directive.

Flaws:
Intense Headaches: While they don't happen on a regular basis, Quinvalis gets a pounding headache in his left temple that at best leaves him wincing and closing his eyes for a moment and at worst, he needs to sleep through the pain.
Reactive: Like most people, he has certain subjects that will set him off if they're insulted or made fun of. He tries his best not to let it get the best of him but sometimes a man simply can't let an insult fly without a fist flying back in return.
Trust Issues: Given his extended family keeps seeing him as a threat and taking away what should be his or worrying he might take what isn't, Quinvalis takes a while to fully open up to people and let them get close.

723 & Born: Quinvalis is born; first child for his parents.
724-727 & 1-4: Quinvalis is the typical carefree boy being spoiled by his mother and staff from infancy into the years of a rambunctious toddler.
728 & 5: His sister, Quilista is born.
729-730 & 6-7: His father hires a Harper to begin a proper education for the eldest son of a Lord, as minor as that title might be.
731 & 8: During his usual morning routines, Valistan ended up being kicked in the chest by a startled horse. The healers couldn’t do anything and he passed away from the internal injuries. His brother lays claim on the farm and, not wanting to keep her children near the horses or stay there anymore, Quilriana moves back to the tavern to help out.
732 & 9: After saving up enough tips and a couple of favours, his mother is able to pay for Quinvalis to sit in on Harper lessons to continue his education.
734 & 11: His mother begins spending time with bronzerider R'nya. He worries at first but sees how happy she is and ends up approving of the man. In fact, he too, is a bit smitten and hangs onto R'nya's every word when he tells stories.
736 & 13: His mother asks R'nya to take him to Fort Weyr with him to give him a better chance at something. She worries his cousins will think he's after the inheritance of the tavern but also sees the sparkle in his eyes whenever he gets to see Xyreith.
737-738 & 14-15: After being accepted quite easily by the residents of Fort Weyr, Quinvalis finds a routine he's comfortable with in terms of juggling chores, lessons, and the occasional helping hand to the Weyrleader. He's even made some friends and finds himself laughing more than he used to and looking forward to time with his friends. There's even talks of getting a firelizard soon!

Education Details: When he was the heir to his father's horse farm, Quinvalis was given a proper Harper's teaching that his father arranged. After his death and the move back to the city, Quilriana used her tips to continue paying for a Harper to instruct him.

RP Sample

Quinvalis stared at the necklace he held in the palm of one hand. His mother had told him to close his eyes and hold one out. A moment later, he felt something drop into it and he slowly opened his eyes to see the familiar piece of jewellery that seemed so odd now that it wasn't around his mother's neck. In truth, it wasn't anything special, but to him, it was the most amazing thing he had seen. It was a simple silver chain of distant thickness that made it sturdy enough to last the wear and tear of decades and dangling from it was a small beautiful deep red stone. He knew the simple tale that went with the piece; it was given to his mother by his grandmother when she was betrothed to his father and it seemed like Quilriana had always cherished it and fiddled with it when she was lost in thought or humming to herself while they were on a picnic with his little sister and R'nya.

He was confused for a moment as to why it was now in his hands and one look at the tears threatening to spill from Quilriana's eyes made it clear what the intention was. However, before he could give it back and say he couldn't take such a treasure -- his grandma had died years before and they didn't have much in sentimental value of her -- his mother spoke and all protests died instantly.

She was proud of him and the future being Searched would give him and that tiny red gem was a piece of her heart that he was to take with him so she'd always be near. He was a man of thirteen years now and men didn't cry, especially not in front of their role model. A quick glance at R'nya showed the bronzerider still nearby but whether or not he was listening was hard to say. A flush stained Quinvalis' cheeks at realizing the older man likely heard everything and his reputation had probably just died before he even stepped a foot onto Fort Weyr soil. Then again, R'nya had been around them for years and he knew his mom well and how she was with her kids. The fact that R'nya never said anything bad about him or his mom and sister made the bronzerider even cooler in his eyes.

Not risking words as he was worried he'd stumble over the gratitude or burst into tears, Quinvalis nodded his understanding with a small smile and slipped the necklace on. Once it was resting high on his chest, almost in line with his heart, a larger smile showed as he looked down at it, liking the view. After a few moments of admiring it, however, Quinvalis tucked it under his shirt, murmuring something about not wanting it to get dirty or fall off. It'd be safe under his shirt and he liked the new sensation of it hanging on his neck and resting directly against his skin. He'd never take the necklace off, fully believing it to be a part of his mother's heart with the warmth and comfort it brought him.

As he turned to go pack -- he had told R'nya he wanted to head out as soon as possible since his excitement wouldn't let him rest in his own bed after knowing he'd been Searched and was a step closer to bonding to a dragon of his own -- Quilriana's words finally hit him. His mom was proud of him. She likely didn't know how much that meant to him. She had always been there for him, especially after his dad died, and he wanted to work just as hard as she had for him and prove it wasn't wasted.

His smile stayed in place as he disappeared back inside the tavern to head to his tiny room and pack. His mother was proud and it was a wonderful feeling.
