Hair: Pretty average brown that is in a slightly shaggy cut but thanks to the straight locks, it is always easily maintained.

General Appearance: Z’rin has a pretty average build for his age and living circumstances. He has enough muscle to lend a hand in such tasks such as hunting, wood-cutting, and building but he is by no means the strongest or fittest man around. He finds himself rather average in the looks department as well, finding he doesn’t really stand out and thinks his nose is large.

Dressing Style: Growing up both in Ista and then Katila, Z’rin loves the heat and will usually be in only a pair of pants with or without a lightweight shirt on. In cooler weather, he likes long sleeved shirts with some having high necks for that extra bit of warmth.

General Character Traits: Z’rin has a few sides to him. The most prominent is that of a man that’s a bit goofy and quick to joke around. He’s not at all afraid to make himself the centre of a joke and is usually more than willing to go along with the teasing that’s at his expense if it makes the joke all the more outlandish and even shocking.

He’s also a bit awkward. He was only twelve when he was lost in the woods and returned to find everyone he knew had packed up and fled the mysterious and cursed southern island. When he was found, he was definitely grateful but also shy and not sure how he was supposed to act or where he was supposed to fit in within the new society. Most of the weyrbrats had made it clear he wasn’t entirely welcome and he awkwardly interacted with them during chores, meals, and downtime until more people started to accept him.

Due to his short time alone in the dangerous wilderness, Z’rin became a bit paranoid and can still be jumpy if he’s surprised. This lends to his awkwardness as well as initially making him worried about making friends and suddenly losing them if he wanders off or even falls asleep.

Overall, however, he’s just a guy that likes to have fun and wants people to share it with. Now that he’s older, he feels like he belongs with the dragonriders and residents of Katila but a part of him will always worry he’s not accepted and one day he’ll be on his own again.

Habits/Mannerisms: Z’rin often runs his hand through his hair, brushing it back out of his face. He also has a habit of playing with his lower lip, whether in thought or just something to do with a hand.

Opinions:
      Threadfall Theory: Learning Seacraft taught him to always keep an eye on the sky for the weather and that Thread could one day return just as likely as a waterspout appearing.
      Stealing/Kidnapping: He knows what it’s like to be suddenly parted from family and sympathised with Northerners but was grateful to Katila for safety and fell in love with the drgaons.
      Firelizards: Adorable pests but after his died in the landslide, he hasn’t Impressed another.
      Return North: Not sure what he’d return to given the way he was left behind and likely presumed dead.

Z’rin loves sleeping in trees. During his time while lost, he would take short naps in trees for extra caution and he still does that now in down time.

It doesn’t matter the game; Z’rin enjoys the interaction and casual chatting as the game unfolds.

Taste Testing:

Z’rin has absolutely no problem being the test dummy for food and drinks. His taste buds may have suffered a bit from the wine that was produced early on, but he finds it fun to give his opinions and help shape the perfect cask or treat.

Spicy foods set his tongue on fire and leaves his stomach in knots so he does his best to avoid it.

Thunderstorms:

While not really afraid of them (though the loud booms can startle him), Z’rin doesn’t like them due to his enjoyment of being outdoors and wet clothes can make activities uncomfortable.

Strategy:

Given his lack of reading skills, Z’rin doesn’t like referencing plans that are laid out. He’s also not that great at deep thinking and planning ahead. He much prefers being in the moment.

He went from a fisherman’s son to surviving a strange land to fitting into a new way of living in a hidden society. While it might take a bit, Z’rin always manages to make a situation work.

Z’rin does his best to always be pleasant to everyone he interacts with, remembering the manners his mother always told him would take him far.

Often quick with snappy comebacks or simply just telling a good joke, Z’rin has a good sense of humour.

Most people assume he’s poorly educated – which is partially true – and simply wasn’t taught to read, however, the words dance on the paper for him and letters rearrange themselves to the point where he finds it hard or even impossible to read. Since trying to sit in on writing lessons at Katila, Z’rin has avoided any sort of paperwork.

Background Story:

212 & Born:

Zarindin is born; he is the second son.

216 & 4:

His mother gives birth to a girl.

Joins lessons from the area’s Harper when he passes through several times each turn, learning rudimentary reading skills and important parts of history.

Starts helping his father and uncle more regularly on the boats and casting nets when out at sea.

Serves as a cabin boy on one of the ships that go South to search for dragons. After two months, and on a day where he went out hunting alone, Zarindin ended up lost and wandering further away. His group ended up giving up on him, especially after a pride of felines attacked the camp. By the time he found his way back, the ships were long gone. After several days of surviving on his own, a bronzerider that was sent out to check on the Northerners found him and brought him back to Katila.

Spends the turn adjusting to his new life. He can’t fully understand why they don’t bring him home and announce that they’re safe as well.

Having fully settled into his new life and okay with the dragonriders needing to stay hidden, Zarindin Stands at the first Hatching since the plague. He doesn’t Impress but is okay with it. The way Northerners are brought in, however, isn’t right and he tries to befriend them.

A woman he was sort of seeing ends up pregnant and gives birth to a girl. Zarindin claims the girl and offers help when he can but isn’t a major role model at this time.

Another Hatching and another failure. Again, he’s okay with it given the plague scare a few turns before and seeing what even a bronze dragonet can do to a friend. He’s horrified at what happened to Indivara and takes more care around dragonets.

234 & 22:

Impression! Finally! While genuinely happy for the moment to finally happen, he’s even happier that it was right after Indivara so she can’t gloat forever that she Impressed and he didn’t.

235 & 23:

Varralath starts chasing and even has won a couple of flights. They graduate at the end of the turn and he contemplates what to do with that freedom. Find his old family or let them continue believing he’s dead?

      Weyrlinghood: Varralath’s dragonet hide is reminiscent of the ocean on a clear and calm day. It’s a very even blue without any oddities to it.

      Adulthood: Varralath grows into a respectable sized dragon, coming in on the higher end of the blue scale, though still not one of the largest. His wing span, however, is slightly longer than what should typically go for his size which sometimes makes him a bit clumsy when not paying attention until his older years when he is more accustomed to them.

His hide is that of a beautiful deep blue that is similar to that of his Hatchling hide but it now has ribbons of purple streaking through body and wings. One other distinctive mark from others close to his colour palette is the dark streak of blue over his left eye and down the side of his nose, stopping at his mouth.

Mindvoice: Varralath’s voice is rather mellow with a lilting tone to it that is very noticeable when excited.

General Character Traits: Varralath can sometimes come across as having the mind of a firelizard. When he’s in one of his moods, his mind flitters about from topic to topic, usually those that are fanciful. For the most part, however, he is simply a playful dragon out to enjoy whatever the day gives and conquer the evil foes and obstacles that present themselves.

He’s also a bit curious, not afraid to ask questions when something comes up that he doesn’t understand or even something completely random that flittered into his head. This is part of the reason why he likes exploring, even if Z’rin sometimes hesitates due to a fear of getting lost. There’s always something to find and learn, and if not, Varralath is perfectly okay making up a silly story about what may have taken place.

Habits/Mannerisms: Has a habit of giving out nicknames that are simply the name and a rhymed word, like Anna-banana.

It’s fascinating to see how humans interact and behave around each other and even what their habits and quirks are.

Dancing:

Varralath loves bouncing from foot to foot in his own little dance. He’ll do it when music is playing or even if he’s simply humming a song for himself. He’ll also happily watch humans dance at a gather, bouncing at the sidelines.

Cake:

Since the early moments of Impressing and Z’rin mentioning cake, Varralath has craved it. Once he finally got a bite, he decided it was delicious and sneaks pieces when he can.

Zarindin was always excited when a Hatching was about to take place, though he had long ago lost the nerves and hope of Impressing. He had Stood at every single one since Nirinath’s first after the plague and every single time, he had failed to leave with a dragonet bounding along beside him. He knew some of the other ‘brats made fun of him for that fact since some comments were made to his face to see his reaction. But it never bothered him after the first Hatching. He was young still and whether or not he ever Impressed, Zarindin was just happy to be a part of such a fascinating society.

Besides, he wasn’t alone in his failings; he still had Ryvian. Although, Ryvian’s tale was a bit sadder since he had a twin that had Impressed a bronze dragonet a few clutches earlier. Zarindin felt bad for his friend but kept an upbeat outlook about it and was glad to see the twin was over his depression as well. He couldn’t imagine what it felt like to lose essentially half of his identity and see his brother achieve something they thought they would get together.

If nothing else came of this particular Hatching, Zarindin was happy that it was taking place in the middle of a clear day. He hadn’t been fast asleep or about to eat a meal, but simply lending a hand with laundry, so he was extremely grateful to be called to the Sands to stand around for a while.

When the action finally began, Zarindin watched on as pair after pair was made. He smiled and gave soft cheers as people he knew Impressed and even gave encouraging smiles to those he didn’t know that seemed overwhelmed with their luck. A quick glance over to Indivara made him extra happy that no one had been seriously injured, though he had to keep a stealthy eye on Indivara when the bronze appeared. It had been several turns since she had been mauled, but it wasn’t likely something one got over easily. He himself was still jumpy when he heard bushes rustling behind him or saw a glimpse of a feline, though he had avoided being attacked during his time alone in the wilderness.

Then, the unexpected happened. Ryvian Impressed. Zarindin gawked with his mouth open as he watched the older twin finally find his lifemate and say something to Indivara. He couldn’t hear since he had chosen to stand away from them, like he always did. There were many people on the Sands he associated with and even called friends, but he liked the solitude during Hatchings.

It was odd watching Ryvian leave. He was thrilled for the man but sad that it hadn’t happened to him. It was better for Ryvian to have, though. He carried the weight of failing so much more than he did and Zarindin liked seeing the joy on the twin’s face.

When Indivara Impressed soon after, Zarindin let out a quiet cheer and even jumped for joy. The dragonet was blue, not bronze like the girl always said she would bond to, but he was a cute little thing and seemed perfectly matched to the spunky girl. It was wonderful seeing more friends Impress, but Zarindin was becoming increasingly aware that there were less and less eggs on the Sands and he was going to end up leaving alone in every sense of the word this time.

Or, so he thought anyway.

The next blue to show himself was adorable and caught Zarindin’s eye immediately. The dragonet watched the flitters play about at the ceiling and didn’t seem to care that he had sand on his nose. It was rather endearing how the blue seemed to be calling for the firelizards to come down and play with him.

Without really knowing he was doing it until he was almost there, Zarindin crossed the grounds and came up beside the dragonet, placing his hand on the little blue head, patting it gently. “I bet they’ll come play with you after you eat. There’ll be more time then, Varralath.” Zarindin’s eyes went wide as he said the dragonet’s name and then smiled, knowing he had also Impressed.

I like the way you think, Z’rin! Please lead the way, Varralath’s smooth voice brushed against his mind and Zarindin nearly squeaked in surprise. It was so different to what it felt like when the older dragons spoke to him. This was far more personal and seemed right. Maybe it was also the fact that Varralath had used his honorific.

“Z’rin… cool.” He smiled again, finding it hard to express his joy. He had bonded to a fun little blue dragonet and now had a name given to him by a dragon, making him truly a part of the society. His father and uncle had left him behind due to circumstances, not because they wanted to, but his name was a reminder of everything he had lost when he was literally lost in the forest. No one could argue he didn’t belong at Katila now.

Even better, he had Impressed right after Indivara. The girl would use that to tease him but at least they had Impressed at the same clutch! That was icing on the cake the day had turned into.

Oooh, cake sounds delicious. Can I have some too? Z’rin laughed at his dragonet, shaking his head as he explained why cake was bad for dragonets and headed for the feeding area.
