Maddox’s limber build was slumped as he quietly entered the Hatching grounds, following behind the other candidates without any push or shove, dark brown eyes flickering in all directions; a particular characteristic of the timid, wary young man. He cringed subtly as his gaze found the form of mother and father, watching on excitedly. Maddox had not managed to Impress at the prior hatching he had attended, but neither had his parents been present. He had had much more fun during those (meaning he had been unobserved and left alone). No matter what happened on the sands now, Maddox had no doubt that it would not be good enough.
With slumped shoulders, Maddox shuffled into the semi-circle that formed loosely around the eggs, his gaze far more on the sand at his feet and the way the grains were stuck to his boots than the eggs. His father would undoubtedly scold him for not even trying, but Maddox simply could not it in himself to try; he would be a disappointment enough as it was. There was no point in making it worse by actually trying. He had learned that lesson long ago and it had been one Maddox took to heart.
Maddox looked up with a worried frown as the Weyrlingmaster walked past him, hissing under his breath about Maddox’s shoulder length hair not being tied back, and handed him a leather to secure it with. Sighing softly, the candidate set about restraining his hair, once more staring at the sand as someone off to his left sniggered. Maddox looked up with surprise when the sniggering was changed to a surprised yelp, and watched with a sad twist to his lips as the bully apparently Impressed to a brown. That would be just his luck, of course, but at least it was not a bronze…
A stumbling step backwards was taken when the dragonet came towards him, Maddox uncaring that in the process he was showing everyone around them just how fearful he was of the fact that the bully had Impressed a dragonet not even twenty seconds prior and already sicked it onto him. The disgruntled emotions that brought about caused confusion within him – why was he suddenly disgruntled? – before the gentle head-butt to his legs had Maddox collapsing backwards onto his butt, staring at the staring dragonet.
Come, Maddy, let us not linger here, the little dragonet said gently, watching patiently as Maddox gawked for a moment, before bursting into silent tears. The little brown stepped smartly into Maddox’s space and let the young man hold him for a few moments, allowing him to comprehend what was going on, before licking his cheek and gently encouraging Maddox to rise to his feet, and lead the way to the most delicious smell.
“Maddy-,” Maddox paused and flushed, staring at his toes as strands of hair fell away to help hide his face when his dragon rumbled displeasure and stepped forward, glaring up at the Assistant with irritable eyes. M’dox and I am Riquarth. Only I shall call him Maddy. Riquarth stared up at the Assistant, before nosing at M’dox’s leg and quietly starting to head in the direction of an unoccupied bucket of delicious meat chunks.
