Bordtai had never known it was possible to fall asleep while still on your feet, but apparently wishing to go between just to stop the pounding in his head made it possible for him to do just that. He had no idea what sort of time had passed before the growing excitement woke him with a start, but pushed himself off the random surface he’d found to lean against and stumbled his way onto the sands with the rest of the candidates.
It was brighter now with the sun risen and he found himself squinting against it’s painful glare. Rubbing one eye with the heel of his hand, he watched the eggs shake and crack as he made a point of standing nearer to Torath’s children. Never before had he thought a hatching could be so painful or he could be so un-excited to be there. Couldn’t they just wait a few more hours? Couldn’t this headache just go away?
Watching the gold hatch, he was less enthralled with her as he tore his eyes back to the other eggs with cracks among them. After all, boy’s didn’t impress gold and he was uninterested in another gold rider. Yes, more Golds meant more clutches – but Bordtai was more interested in what would be coming from the other eggs. Three greens had his attention more as he watched them bond to other boys among the candidates.
Whether it was the heat from the sands warming his boots or the realization that impressions were being made with or without him, Bordtai found his head clearing just a little bit. Seeing a bit clearer, he rubbed his eye again and silently cursed the pounding in his head as he turned his attention to the rest of the clutch.
