B’jin’s delighted enthusiasm was always a breath of fresh air to the bluerider and as always, he smiled and chuckled with a nod. “Yes, more.” Suddenly, the nerves of the night before and that morning before the flight returned and R’nd eyed the bag like it contained a nest of tunnelsnakes. Ayyonth continued his gentle nudging of encouragement and R’nd knew the dragon was doing his best not to call him names for being silly. It was just a drawing on a piece of parchment – a clean and crisp piece he had managed to coerce out of V’ler – it wasn’t anything overly dramatic, it wouldn’t imply what shouldn’t be implied, and it wasn’t likely to offend more than B’jin’s delicate senses. But if the man could still love his daughter with some of the things she called drawings, then he had nothing to worry about either!
Ayyonth gave a deep rumble of laughter in R’nd’s mind at what had just been implied though the bluerider sat in confusion over the reaction. That’s probably for the best, Ayyonth pointed out before urging him to grab the parchment before R’nd’s birthday rolled around.
With one deep breath, R’nd set down his mug and reached inside the bag to pull out the rolled up paper. With an exhale and then another deep breath, it was passed over to B’jin, “happy birthday, B’jin. For about the twelfth time today,” he laughed, though it was at his obvious nervousness and not at all at anything relating to the greenrider.
He waited until B’jin unrolled the drawing before breathing resumed naturally. It wasn’t amazing as he wasn’t trained or all that skilled in art but R’nd thought it was pretty good all the same. Good enough for a gift? Not really but that was exactly what it was now and he’d have to deal with it. So much time had been spent on it and in a way, he was proud of the outcome. “You once said that you wouldn’t want anything specific. You only wanted something that was important to the artist.” That was exactly what it was. It was the view of the ocean and setting sun back home, set from within his favourite little alcove of a cave about twenty minutes’ hike from his home. It was a place he liked to escape to when he wanted to get away from the excitement on the docks and within the hold. His sister knew of the cave and had joined him a few times in the past but no one else had ever gone with R’nd, which was why the addition of two vaguely human-shaped blobs sat just off to the side inside the cave was odd.
“My favourite place back North,” R’nd whispered, almost embarrassed to admit to such a thing and what followed. “I would like to bring you there one day.” Ayyonth? Nothing more had to be said as Ayyonth picked up easily R’nd’s emotions and desires. The memory was plucked and soon he was sharing it with Larrikith. That is the scene he tried to paint for B’jin. An odd thing to paint but precious to him all the same.
