Month 05, 741 AL

North: Late Spring | South: Late Autumn
9.9 C to 18.4 C | 13.7 C to 24.5 C

Ista is heating up swiftly, and preparing for a rough summer - hopefully nothing like the one from a couple turns before with the wildfires! The rest of Northern Pern is warming upsomewhat slower, but with no less gusto as summer begins to creep into the sky, keeping the sun awake longer, warming the ledges of the weyrs. Rainstorms are sporadic, but keep the world well watered, despite the heat of the days.

The Red Star can be seen by those who choose to see it, causing no shortage of whispers that Thread will return - and just as much dismissal from those who do not believe. After all, it's been so long, surely it is no longer a threat! Weyrleaders are, regardless, beginning to put together wings in their Weyrs, if only to keep troublesome and bored riders busy.

Month 12, 740 AL

Fort Boundaries:
Winter -3 - 2 C | 26 - 35 F
Fort is already home to snowfalls, though early in the month they fade away when the sun rises. As the month progresses, more snow stays on the ground, ending up with several feet of snow before the month is over. The areas around homes and populations has the snow shoveled away or trodden down. Icicles attached to Weyr ledges prove some danger and are routinely removed.

Ista Boundaries:
Winter, 9 - 21 C | 48 - 69 F
Generally warm enough to go about without a jacket on, Ista has low humidity but high chance of rain, generally in the form of vicious afternoon thunderstorms. The storms wash away any bite of heat the day had, and leave it feeling fresh for the night. The days are short, but grow bright quickly and the afternoons seem to be particularly short when heavy thunderstorms roll in and cover the sky.

Telgar Boundaries:
Winter, -5 - 0 C | 23 - 32 F
Bitterly cold, with icy winds constantly flowing down from the mountains. Freezing rain is almost constant; the sky always a murky grey and the ground slippery with slushy refrozen ice. The days are extremely short, with the nights dropping a good number below the daily average. Icicles attached to Weyr ledges prove a major danger, and are checked upon every day, with anything bigger than a fist being removed.

Month 07, 740 AL

Fort Boundaries:
Summer 27 - 38 C | 80 - 100 F
Light breezes down from the mountains tot he North keep the temperature comfortable, even when the sun can bake an egg on the edge of a weyr. Sunburn is common.

Ista Boundaries:
Summer, 34 - 43 C | 93 - 110 F
A very dry, dusty heat. Little to no rain, causing more than some to worry about the drought not breaking and the rest of the Isle being at risk of fires. Many seek the depths of weyr, hold or hall during the midday and early afternoon heat.

Telgar Boundaries:
Summer, 26 - 35 C | 79 - 95 F
Muggy, sticky and generally just plain humid. Thunder storms are regular occurances, often happening in the early afternoon or evening, with heavy rainfall before drying off sometime in the night. Mornings are usually crisp, but warm up swiftly.

Month 06, 740 AL

Fort Boundaries: Season, Low to High
Ista Boundaries: Season, Low to High

Month 04, 740 AL
North: Early Spring | South: Early Autumn
−1.9 C to 4.7 C | 20.0 C to 29.0

Spring has sprung, with the snow slowly melting in much of the North, creating mushy grounds and greyish, icy snow piles that are doing their best to melt. In comparison, Ista finds itself naturally warmer, (~10C / 50) and many people who can find rides are making their way to the Island to spend some time in warmth and sunshine, away from the lingering touch of winter.

Katila is beginning to cool down to more reasonable temperature, but is no less muggy and uncomfortable to those who are not used to the seasons. It is still a good place to escape to when seeking a warm day or a nice swim at the lake, though.

Month 12, 739 AL
North: Early Winter| South: Early Summer
-3.1 to 2.1 C | 20.4 C to 29.4 C

Winter has come slowly to the Northern lands of Pern, with more rain and cold winds than snow. As the month progresses, more and more snow will fall, with frequent blizzard-like storms towards the very end of the month. Telgar and Fort will in particular become burried under mountains of snow, while Ista is sunjected to frequent icy rainstorms, and heavy winds coming in from across the ocean.

Month 09, 739 AL
North: Early Autumn| South: Early Spring
13.4 to 21.0 C | 13.8 C to 25.6 C

Following the disastrous fires (sometime in around the 28th of Month 08), Ista Isle has found itself suddenly in the midst of constant rain; not enough to flood, but a steady, dreary downfall that seems to only take a time out for a couple of hours here and there, before coming back again. Its cast the entire sooty Isle into a sombre and depressed mood. Alongside the rain, the weather is muggy and while not hot, is not particularly cool, either.

The rest of Northern Pern is getting their usual weather, though they, too, have been called to action following the wildfires that savaged Ista. Many individuals who called Ista Island home have been relocated not just to Ista Weyr, Ista Hold or Sea Cliff Hold, but also to other areas of Pern, whether with family or friends.

Month 08, 739 AL
North: Late Summer | South: Late Winter
17.4 to 25.5 C | 10.8 C to 23.2 C

Ista is still unseasonably warm - 37 to 45 C - has resulted in an incredibly dry summer, with little to no rain. This was climaxed by a dry thunderstorm, the results of which caused three fires to start across the Island on the 24.07.739 in the early morning hours. While the results of this are yet to be played out, the events will no doubt leave more than just the scarring of the land.

Month 07, 739 AL
North: Mid Summer | South: Mid Winter
18.0 to 26.6 C | 10.2 C to 21.9 C

Ista is still unseasonably warm, with average weather being in the 37 to 45 C range, making it now a more than slightly undesirable escape for the rest of the Northern population from the more enjoyable early summer weather. There has been very little in the way of rain, though the coastal areas are no stranger to the salty wind. Ista's limited farmlands and fields are dry and dusty, with golden straw instead of grass where there is any growth at all.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Northern areas are still getting a lot of evening rain and the occasional thunderstorms, which cools down the populus and allows them to sleep easily without sweating their brains out like the Istans.

There has been very little in the way of rain, though the coastal areas are no stranger to the salty wind.

Spring has sprung, with the snow slowly melting in much of the North, creating mushy grounds and greyish, icy snow piles that are doing their best to melt. In comparison, Ista finds itself uncommonly warm (~12C / 53.6) and many people who can find rides are making their way to the Island to spend some time in warmth and sunshine, away from the lingering touch of winter.

The late-season weather is settling, with much of the Northern hemisphere coated in snow (the exception being the much warmer Ista region) while Katila remains humid and sweltering in the height of Summer.

Month 11, 738 AL
North: Late Autumn | South: Late Spring

Autumn is coming to an end, with the days slowly becoming shorter still, with early nights and late mornings. The temperature is getting very cool, with jackets being more required, but it has yet to actually snow. Despite this, it is often raining and miserable.

The Southern contient is in full bloom, with flowers coming to life in the grasses and on the trees. The skies are bright blue with fluffy clouds, and occassional sunshowers bringing a dampness to the day. The nights are still crisp, but not cold. The ground is starting to dry up as water is absorbed by the blooming flora.

Month 10, 738 AL
North: Mid Autumn | South: Mid Spring

Autumn is in full tilt, with the leaves a shocking array of orange and red, and more of them on the ground than on the trees. The skies are often a clear and crisp blue, with a cool breeze flowing, shifting the leaves and sending them scattering. Rain is not common, but when it does roll in the skies are dark like night come early, and thunderstorms are not uncommon, though they don't last for long and the amount of rain that falls isn't too heavy.

Month 09, 738 AL
North: Start Autumn | South: Start Spring

Nothern regions are entering into Autumn, with the trees beginning to change to their reds and oranges, while the air is beginning to feel more crips. There are still more warm days than cool, and the nights are mostly warm enough for light bedding still. Rain has faded away and most days are clear and bright.

The Southern contient finds itself heading into spring, with rain and flowers vying for attention. The ground is often muddy and squishy, while the skies are either bright and blue, or overcast wtih fluffy clouds.

Month 08, 738 AL
North: End Summer | South: End Winter

Summer is winding to an end in the Northern hemisphere, with the weather slowly cooling and the trees beginning to turn their leaves. The days are still long and bright, but the sun is beginning to lose some of its strength.

The coastal Weyrs are falling victim to coastal storms, strong winds and heavy rains with thunder and lightening.

The more inbound Weyrs and Holds find themselves drier, not getting nearly as much rain or storms, they find themselves on the end of a long drought.

Month 07, 738 AL
North: Mid Summer | South: Mid Winter

Summer is in full spring in the Nothern hemisphere, with the bulk of each day being unbearbly hot, followed by vicious thunderstorms and heavy humidity in the evenings and at night.

The coastal areas are experiencing monsoon like weather, and spend a lot of their time locked away in Hold, Hall or Weyr.

The more inner locations find themselves faced with more dry heat during the day, and horrible humidity in the evening and at night while the thunderstorms rage.

ITS AN UPDATE! HOORAH!

I'm not dead, my loves! This month's Event is 'Close Call!' - have fun! Stamps will be uploaded and on display in our Discord chatroom.

There is a topic here for discussion about Pernese religions and belief systems, including in and out of Weyr opinions (variably and as a whole) in regards to delicate matters, such as birth, death, and the afterlife. Also, ghosts anyone? Now I'm imagining a giant arse dragon ghost....

Healer Hall is accepting Gold Candidates (just from Fort, for now) and R'nya will soon be discussing with his Weyrwoman Rhaedalyn the merits of bringing in additional female candidates.... on the condition they are approved for Healer Apprenticeship...

Thallyath, Casa's little gold dragon, will be taking to the skies for her maiden flight in the first week of April (IC date will be 740-04-01) and while a mate is already decided, this clutch will be PC and more candidates are ALWAYS welcome, whether you want them to Impress this round --- or not!

September 2018

Spring is here! ... In Australia, anyway!

This month’s riveting event is ‘Seas of Fun’, in honour of International Pirate’s Day! After all the drama with the fires, we expect that taking to the sea (or lake, river, pond, etc) would be a very relaxing way to spend some downtime for many dragonriders and Holderfolk alike!

In preparation for October, the even is “Memories of the Past”, which we hope will be a fun way to explore your character’s past, either in solo posts or threads, as inner monolog or as back posting! How you choose to partake is entirely up to you!

October will also see our next PC HATCHING! In order to have your Candidate qualify for Impression, they must have no less than 20 posts! There are lots of characters floating around who would be more than happy to help your Candidate breech that count! Don’t forget to also UPDATE YOUR APPLICATIONS where applicable, or make sure it is submitted at all! We can’t Impress your character if we don’t know what they should be getting!

As always, be sure to submit your threads to the IC RP Timeline submission thread, so they can be added to the list! While you’re at it, remember to submit your favourite quotes – from your character’s or others! – to the Quote Submission Thread! We want to see some recent quotes thrown in with our old ones!

If you haven't already, please drop by the Dragonrider Weyr Allocations thread, and let us know where your dragonriders call home. We are hoping to set up Wings across the three PC Weyrs over the next month or so, and your assistance is much appreciated! As a result, we will be looking for Wingleaders, Wingseconds, and of course Candidates for the clutches we have scheduled for this year!

August 2018

ITS AUGUST! Do you know what that means? It means its less than 4 months until Christmas! OMG.

Okay. So moving on! This month sees us (hopefully) wrapping up the Camp Kink event! Who doesn’t love an abundance of young adults exploring their sexuality without restraint? Its been a hell of a fun ride (haha get it?) so far! Can’t wait to see what the grapevine makes of it when words gets out … haha!

On a more serious note, this month will see us engaging in the Istan Wildfires! This event is a free for all! Feel free to have your characters interact with the event in any way you feel is suitable! There is a lot of room here for personal dramas, trouble making, hero worshiping, etcetera! We really want to see how characters interact with, and dictate, the outcome of the event!

Those of you who are intersted, please take part in a discussion about the Plot for opening up the Healer Hall! You can find it [here].

July 2018

July was July-y.

June 2018

Welcome to the new month! Like always, I'm slack in getting the update up and running, but here it is! This month we have the event 'Summer Fling' - [Link] - which is turning out to be all kinds of entertaining already! Remember, it doesn't have to include smut! It could be an innocent date with some - *gasp* - hand holding!

This month also saw Gold Bedith of Mulrissa take to the skies! She was won by young Syrendryth of T'ryn! Congrats, and may your Hatching be less dramatic than the last one! The Hatching will take place in October so you have a lot of time to get Candidates created, approved, and posting up a storm!

Those of you who are intersted, please take part in a discussion about the Plot for opening up the Healer Hall! You can find it [here].

April 2018

Well, it’s halfway through the month which shows you how awful I am at keeping this stuff up to date, haha. Due to my slackness, there is no event this month, but the month of May will be hosting ’Lost Belongings’ wherein characters should find something they – or someone else – lost.

In the meantime, gold Okalinath of Kahleena has taken to the skies! You can find her Flight thread taking place on the 4th, here Currently, there is no planned winner, so be sure to throw your bronzes and browns her way! They do not need to be natives to Telgar Weyr to participate!

March 2018

Welcome to March, my friends!

Unfortunately, this month we don’t have any events set up, so we encourage you to wrap up threads and create some personal plots! Next month will be bringing in a new monthly event (Lost Belongings!) so you can always set your character up for that! If you have ideas for future Events, you can submit them here!. Additionally, you can see upcoming events here!

Speaking of new threads, be sure to submit your threads to the IC RP Timeline submission thread, so they can be added to the list! While you’re at it, remember to submit your favourite quotes – from your character’s or others! – to the Quote Submission Thread! We want to see some recent quotes thrown in with our old ones!

January 2018

Welcome to the New Year, one and all! We hope you had an enjoyable and safe holiday season, and we can't wait to see what your characters will get up to over the next twelve months (and beyond!). The Secret Santa Event has been extended until the 30th of January, so for those of you (like me!) who were busy over the end of December, we hope you can get your threads up and running over the next few weeks! There has been a lot of interesting interactions so far! As we extended the SSE, there won't be a specific January event this month! Don't worry though, we have something up our sleeve for February!

With the end of December, our Christmas layout has gone back into hiding! You'll be able to use it again at the end of the year, when Christmas again rolls around. You can expect a new layout for the site in the near future.

December 2017

And so it is December! Can’t believe how fast this year is flying by! At any rate, we have LOTS of fun for you this month! For starters, why don’t you sign up for our Secret Santa Event! Pairs will be assigned on the 14th! You can sign your character(s) up as a Giver, a Receiver or Both! We also hope that you enjoy our Christmas layout, which will be available for use for the entire month of December! After that, it will go into hiding until next Christmas!

We will also be awarding the HORRIFYING MOMENTS stamps to those who qualified for them, as well as the WORDS OF THE MONTH for November. We hope you enjoyed these Events, and you can expect more of them in the upcoming year!

This month we will also be focusing on the RP Records, and request you submit all your threads here so we can update the Timeline! As it says in the thread, the Timeline will be updated every month, in the first week. To help us maintain, be sure to submit your threads as soon as you open them!

November 2017

Welcome to November! We'd love it if you would take the time to Vote in our Horrifying Moments threads! We will also be awarding Stamps for people who vote, not just those who took part! We hope you enjoyed this event as much as we did! You can see the Stamps that will be awarded in the Horrifying Moment's thread.

This month we are doing a 'Words of the Month' event! You can choose your word/s as indicated in the thread, and may particpate with as many characters as you desire! This contest has no voting to earn stamps; you get a stamp just for participating! Enjoy!

October 2017

Welcome to October! As part of our Halloween celebrations, the Horrifying Moments event is now open! You may START a thread at any point during the month of October to qualify it for the event! We hope you have a lot of fun with this event, and we look forward to reading your threads! Don't forget to "Like" the threads you enjoy most, so we can award someone the MOST HORRIFYING stamp! Stamps will be revealed later in the month!

September 2017

Welcome to September! This month, we're working on our Awards for the site! We are also advertising avidly! Please welcome any guests or new members with all that warm charm we know you all posess! That said, we are still seeking Affiliates, so if you're here to drop an ad, please consider us!

Our next PC Clutch will be in the new year, so now is the pefect time to join with old candidates (how many clutches have they stood for now?!) and candidate hopefuls! Get those eager young men and women out there and grow them so we can match them with their perfect lifemate when the new year rolls around and one of our lovely golds throws a clutch on the Sands -- At this point in time, the Weyrs are sharing Candidates, so your Candidate can be Searched by any Weyr, and transfer to the one holding the PC clutch!

August 2017

We are officially open for our relaunch, and are excited to meet and greet new RPers! We're currently looking for all types of characters, including Weyrleaders and goldriders! But we also have lots of room for green and blueriders, weyrfolk, candidates, and all types of Hall folk, such as Masters, Journeymen and Apprentices. If you have any questions, feel free to hit us up in the Cbox or Discord chats, which can be found on the lower part of the screen.

July 2017

We are currently having an event to Create Adoptables! And encourage everyone to take part!

History is almost complete, and the profile has been re-coded. All new characters will need to go onto the new profile, but all old can keep their current! We'll begin advertising properly over the next couple of weeks, once the history has been completed, and probably after the weekend of the 8th and 9th, because that is when ThistleProse is having her birthday.

June 2017

We are on the brink of relaunching! Our history is being rewritten and cleaned up! We are accepting new members, and old! Our advertisment has been re-written, and will be put out there soon. We are also accepting affiliates of all descriptions, genres and themes! If you would like to affiliate with us, please go here
We officially have two layouts! You can post here with any issues you find, or request any changes!

May 2017

Progress has slowed down a little, due to RL events (yay promotions! Boo no internet!) but we're getting back on track! Documents are still being written and we've put together a FAQs page, though its likely to recieve a lot of adjustments as we come across things. The current goal is to have everything set up and ready by July, but we'll see how well we go at that. And by we, I mean ThistleProse. lol.

April 2017

The layout is almost complete, but there is still a lot of work to be done; documents are being written up and can be found in the Site Map menu opion. Players can begin to move their characters' information to their Account Profiles, but be aware some changes may still be made and/or added.
If you find any bugs or issues, plese repot them here, and we will do our best to fix them in a timely manner.

L'varl had been staring at his prostrate bronze for the past ten minutes, trying his best to surreptitiously figure out why the great lump was just sitting there. Twenty six Turns and Korutath still managed to surprise him on a regular basis. He knew that it wasn't something the dragon did on purpose--Korry probably didn't even know he was doing it--but that didn't stop the bronzerider from brooding over it. L'varl was so used to the endless activity that typically extruded from his dragon that the stillness currently stagnating around his hut was disconcerting.

Kor... Ah! There, movement! The big bronze head turned far enough to fix one great faceted eye on him. ...what are you doing?

Hmm? Oh. Thinking. I think.

L'varl grunted, crossing his arms on the table and resting his forehead on them. You're always thinking. What else are you doing?

How long has it been? L'varl frowned and glanced up at the dragon, who had rested his head at an angle on the ground, eye trained on his lifemate.

How long has what been? He asked, completely baffled. Korutath didn't typically muse about the past, nor was he the most introspective individual around. L'varl tried his best not to dwell on the fact too much lest he distress the dragon's delicate sensibilities. He'd come to learn how to deal with it without driving himself absolutely insane himself, which wouldn't have done either of them any good. The fact that Korutath was bringing the past up of his own violition was a change, and it sent a spark of curiosity through L'varl's veins.

Since we came here. How long?

An eyebrow rose, and L'varl sucked his lower lip between his teeth for a moment. Now he was thoroughly baffled. Oh. Uh...Seventeen Turns, give or take? I don't know off the top of my head. Why?

Oh... He sounded so thoroughly disappointed that L'varl didn't know the exact date down to the hour that he frowned and rose. Moving to Korutath's head, he scratched at a flaky patch behind the dragon's headknob. No, no it's not your fault I was just curious. At L'varl's dubious noise, Korutath shifted worriedly. He settled him quickly and ducked back inside, returning shortly with a towel.

What say you to a bath? He asked with a light tap of his knuckles on the bronze's side. He had to backtrack away when Korutath quite literally scrambled to his feet, losing one or two out from under him in his haste before he managed the feat, snaking his head around to observe his rider skeptically.

Sand and all? You promise?

Would I lie to you?

It was in short order (and more than a few reminders that L'varl couldn't walk as fast as the bronze dragon, at which point a meek apology would be offered, along with a gentle nudge in the small of the back once L'varl had caught up and passed) that L'varl found himself astride the bronze and emerging from between with a grimace. Korutath landed, pausing long enough for L'varl to slide down the offered limb before bounding not unlike a canine towards the lake. The bronzerider stood and watched with arms crossed, a surprisingly affectionate expression passing over his face.

S'kef still had no doubt that he was well-suited to the job he'd unabashedly chosen for himself, but that didn't mean he liked people in his face all the sharding time. He'd gotten used to having to retreat to his hut for privacy, and there was absolutely no way he could hope to bathe Tyrrisath without interruption. After a few failed attempts of visiting the river at odd times, he'd decided that this time he would head to the lake.

Not a good idea, it turned out. Tyrrisath winked into view over the lake, shadow falling only a few dragonlengths away from the bronze and his rider. Seriously? he thought, thinking about the awkward situation with N'kal only a couple months before. At least this time he wasn't so insecure; before, he'd felt the need to land and speak to the bronzerider, only to prove that he wasn't scared of him. It would have looked weak to appear, notice the man, and move along as if he'd changed his mind.

Today, he was landing because he didn't give a shit. Who needed to impress bronzeriders?

Tyrrisath silently agreed. The pair settled a respectful distance away and S'kef dismounted, carefully removing the bag of supplies he'd brought. Flit appeared alongside them, chirping sweetly as she alighted on S'kef's shoulder and nuzzled his cheek with her tiny snout. He didn't react to it, but simply being allowed to do so seemed to brighten the tiny beast's mood. Tyrrisath snorted and eyed her with amusement.

"That's enough, Flit," S'kef said, gently batting her away. She quietly fluttered away, skimming along the sand after VTOLs and other small flying creatures, content to prance along until she came upon L'varl and his bronze. She landed in the sand and peered at them, intrigued. She wanted to go make friends, but would S'kef put up with that?

"Flit! Are you bothering them?" S'kef called out before realizing how ridiculous it was that he was addressing a tiny green rather than the human on the beach not three feet from her. He groaned at himself and walked in their direction, leaving Tyrrisath to lazily flop in the mud.

"L'varl," S'kef greeted, nodding to the broznerider as he recalled Flit to his shoulder.

Movement out of the corner of his eye caused L'varl to glance away from his studious inspection of his dragon's antics and towards what turned out to be a fire lizard. An eyebrow slowly raised as he stared at the little beast, not quite sure whether he was supposed to shoo it away or simply ignore it. Dealing with fire lizards was something that the bronzerider didn't have a huge amount of experience with. She's doing you no harm, let her be, Korutath offered lazily. L'varl had begun to turn back towards the bronze when he heard S'kef's call. He looked their way, eyes settling first on the brown dragon before sliding in an almost grudging manner to the rider.

"S'kef," he responded, giving a respectful bob of his head in return. Korutath paused long enough to right himself and stick his head far enough out of the water to see who the new arrivals were (also possibly to see if he needed to eat anything because the flash of irritation that L'varl had unintentionally sent his way, despite the fact that eating a human was absolutely abhorrent to the bronze once he got past the point of initial thought and on to actual thought analysis).

Korutath wasn't concerned about the color of a dragon's hide--nor was he particularly concerned about Weyr politics, if we're going to get nitty and gritty about it. So he gave the brown due diligence; about a whole second of observation before disappearing back under the surface of the lake. L'varl, splitting his attention between his dragon and the Weyrleader, allowed one corner of his mouth to twitch upwards at the bronze's lack of interest. "It's...she's fine," he said, altering his pronoun at Korutath's prodding (You wouldn't call me an it, would you?).

L'varl took note with a fair bit of amusement that Korutath had been slowly making his way towards the brown. He wasn't usually a very playful dragon, but he was bored and in the water, and besides, virtually everyone liked him! The humans were being civil, and therefore it was only common sense that the dragons do the same. He was a comical sight, this bronze dragon, paddling through the water with his neck sticking straight up out of the water, arched smartly. He was still deep enough that the tips of his claws would have just barely scraped the sandy bottom if he'd stretched as far as he could.

He had never been all that fond of the mud approach, much preferring to let L'varl labor away at his hide (despite, in the early years, all of the complaining about how Korutath was growing much too fast and would he kindly slow down so L'varl's arms didn't fall off, thank you very much!). Laziness, the bronzerider called it, though he never did manage to sound too put out by that fact. "Your day is going well, I hope?"

S'kef watched as the bronze dragon lazily paddled towards Tyrrisath, who was only half-amused. Tyrrisath was far from a playful beast, and he soon found himself sliding up onto the bank and pulling his bulk from the water in hopes of avoiding any impromptu playtime. How unpleasant that would be.

The brownrider crossed his arms, watching for a few seconds longer before returning his attention to L'varl. He secretly relished the casual respect he got from the man. It always pleased him to have the deference of bronzeriders, but groveling and pandering was hard to take seriously...not that he didn't enjoy that in it's own way. He did have a measure of respect for this one though, so the sincerity did not go unnoticed.

In fact, S'kef had developed a habit of appraising the Weyr's bronze and brownriders during such chance encounters. He saw no reason not to continue now. Maybe this one would be less of a disappointment.

"I am well. And yourself?" he asked, looking the man up and down without bothering to appear subtle. Why should he? He respected the bronzerider's confident stance and cool demeanor, but he did wonder if his scrutiny would change anything. So many of them became wary, assuming he was up to something! This man seemed comfortable so far, however, and from what S'kef knew of him, he didn't expect much to change.

He secretly wondered if his new position sat well with L'varl, though. He would dearly love to ask the man's opinion and perhaps have a laugh at the response, but that wasn't exactly a tactful topic for the time being, now was it?

"It's a bit of a slow day, actually. Rare in these times, is it not?"

Instead of acting as if he'd just been rejected (because that was most certainly not what had just happened), Korutath proceeded to haul himself back onto the shore and settle down in a languid heap a short distance away. For all his childishness he still possessed a certain level of pride, which had to be defended at all times. L'varl had never tried to suppress that, despite his prickliness, and he was pretty sure every rider out there thought his dragon was the best. As old as he was, the bronze had never fully grown out of the playfulness that he'd had as a weyrling. It was funny, more than anything, so the bronzerider never minded it overmuch.

He took a moment to settle the slightly disgruntled bronze (everybody liked to play with him--he was good at it!), and resisted the urge to point out that it was usually dragons that weren't as old as he was that participated. Korutath huffed silently and deigned not to answer. Another victory to L'varl, it would seem.

Another habit that L'varl had initially found incredibly distracting was Korutath's habit of holding a near-continuous internal monologue. He always seemed to have something to say, whether it was pertinent or not. In this case it was mostly nonsensical mumblings about how he was perfectly okay with lying here in a heap for the duration of this conversation, thanks. L'varl had to smirk, ever so slightly, at his dragon's expense. He turned back to S'kef in time for the man's question and inspection.

It didn't go unnoticed, but he didn't see much point in getting his back up over it. L'varl was far from stupid, and he knew that there were probably people who sized others up behind their backs; at least the Weyrleader had the confidence (or decency) to do it to your face.

"Mmm. Nothing to complain about," he said, pausing at Korutath's obligatory input (I've got something to complain about.) and his obligatory response (I don't think he cares.). "Very," he agreed. "Though I'm sure my activities don't come near to equaling yours."

"Some days are worse than others," S'kef replied. He loved how L'varl didn't flinch from his eye. It was nice to see that at least one of the bronzeriders around wasn't a total coward. S'kef was almost ashamed of how proper and submissive he'd once been before them. Surely some of them remembered, perhaps had even noticed S'kef's attitude change with time. If any of them did, however, they had not yet shown it or made any comment. So many of Katila's bronzeriders had been shy to step into the roles that were once expected of them. Hah! And they wondered how they ended up with a brownrider in charge!

S'kef realized he was grinning, and inserted a mild, dismissive laugh. "Most of the time, it's a sharding mess," he said with that same small bit of humor, though there was also a distinct streak of pride in his voice. The job was hell, but he'd firmly convinced himself that he was born for it. He reminded himself of that any time he felt weighed down. This was his He'd worked hard, and he'd done things that he truly felt no one else would do to achieve that goal. It was an arrogant mindset that he felt completely entitled to. He wasn't just ambitious. Being ambitious meant protecting your own interest, but he had been and still was willing to crush someone else's as well.

Times like this made S'kef think of J'ver. The wily greenrider had been instrumental by his actions, but he also served as a reminder that no one could get away with such a massive undertaking alone. Becoming Weyrleader was a lofty first goal, but now S'kef found himself with the even alrger one of whipping this damn place into shape. He needed help from other strong, like-minded individuals.

Therefore, the casual appraisal continued. "Someone's got to do it. It's hectic, of course...people will complain about anything, and this place was a sharding wreck." Was? Shards, it still was, but S'kef wasn't admitting that. It was obviously insane for anyone to expect an overnight fix, but S'kef figured the first step to achieving that overnight fix was acting like it was in the bag. People were stupid, and D'ren had practically reeked of stress and fear. Why would anyone show their weakness like that?

"Tsuen would continue to see it run into the ground, of course," S'kef continued with mild humor, waiting with interest to see how L'varl might react. Then, partially to add to the fire and partially because he just couldn't help it, "Stupid bitch."

L'varl was splitting his attention between his dragon, who was still brooding in a very uncharacteristic but admittedly childish manner, and the Weyrleader. It wasn't so much that he didn't trust the man (L'varl didn't trust much of anybody, actually, but he usually didn't act on that paranoia enough to be obvious about it), but that he was similarly curious. Scoping him out was all well and good, he could have cared less. He had confidence in spades, even if there was a seed of worry and just a tiny bit of jealousy from Korutath, and he didn't need to prove himself to anyone.

He had decided, for some reason that not even he was completely sure of, not to pass judgement on S'kef as quickly as he was tempted to do when the brownrider had first stepped into the role of Weyrleader. He'd gradually found himself pleasantly surprised by the results of not immediately sweeping S'kef into the 'inept' category, which was, unfortunately, growing at an alarming rate. He had to agree with S'kef on what a mess Katila had been, though he wasn't so sure it shouldn't have been 'still was.' Things were better, sure, anyone could see that, but he was of much the same opinion as S'kef. Nothing would happen overnight, and anyone who expected it to happen was an idiot. Things could go rotten much faster than they could be fixed, and Katila had had more than enough time for the wounds to fester and rot. It had been a sickness, and nobody had had the clarity to see it for what it was until it was nearly too late. Or, they hadn't been able to do anything up until now.

"People don't like not knowing the future. They're convinced they can control everything except that when they can't even control their own present. Train wreck is a good way to describe it." L'varl had never been a particularly outspoken individual. He liked to watch, and Korutath had a particular talent for remembering offhand comments that he made to the bronze when L'varl himself would have forgotten them. People-watching wasn't a term L'varl would have used, but it was relatively accurate for the sport, if a little tame for a bronzerider's tastes.

L'varl was thoroughly torn on the topic of the previous Weyrleader; on the one hand, he'd grown up around the older rider, if not consciously watching him, at least taking as many notes from as many different bronzeriders as he possibly could. On the other, he was disappointed in the way he had allowed things to deteriorate before the murder attempt. Much of that could also be blamed on Tsuen, of course, and that was generally what L'varl preferred to do. He had never liked the woman, and never trusted her soundness of mind. Clearly, those had been good instincts. Sometimes he almost wished he'd done something about it. But his days of rule-breaking and adventure had been over before Katila even existed, and he was largely okay with that.

"She was certainly doing something wrong," L'varl said after a pause, not sure whether S'kef was baiting him or being genuine. Then common sense set in and the paranoia was set firmly aside. He couldn't say he was particularly surprised by S'kef's vehemence against the Weyrwoman, either. He was the one picking up the pieces, after all.

"More like everything wrong," S'kef pointed out bluntly. He had absolutely no problem trashtalking Tsuen. He tried to play nice to D'ren, at least when speaking to the public, but that was because D'ren had been his boss for so long. S'kef had worked with him, and everyone knew it. It was better for his own reputation to push all of the blame on  Tsuen, even if she was a remarkably stupid, ineffective leader. Trashing Tsuen was basically a Katilan sport at this point, and S'kef figured if he got nice and personal in the discussion, maybe L'varl would open up a bit for him.

"That's the problem when a goldrider thinks she's in charge just because of her dragon's weight. She may be able to control other dragons, but that's all they've got. They're one-trick wonders, and at the end of the day they're no more fit to rule than a Lord's clingy wife," he said dismissively. "Running a Weyr is a man's job. Tsuen was a naive fool to think she could handle it, and now she's lead us to the brink of ruin." He scowled for a moment, then let out a short, derisive laugh. "Though I think Her Majesty is awfully offended that I don't seem to be following her orders. I'm sure she could bully D'ren into anything she wanted, but I don't give a damn what that withered hag has to say. She's useless, and it's high time we all admitted that."

Ttyrrisath was deeply amused. It wasn't often that S'kef ranted like that for people. He liked to keep his darker and less favorable sides hidden from the public view, but Tyrrisath suspected that S'kef sensed a likeminded individual in L'varl. Tyr certainly hoped so. He liked the rants. They were amusing for him and therapeutic for S'kef, and in this case, the reaction from his companion might prove telling indeed.

L'varl chuckled. Well, we certainly know where he stands on the matter of Tsuen, he commented to Korutath, who really could have cared less. The dragon was very much the live-and-let-live type, and he usually preferred to let the hits land where they may. That might have been partly due to the fact that his memory was less than impressive, and therefore didn't have much of an ability to judge people on past actions (though he was not above the occasional foray through L'varl's memories); as long at they were nice to L'varl, he liked them just fine. They didn't even have to like him! He knew he could be a little intimidating when his metaphorical feathers were ruffled. No reason to take people's reaction to his awesomeness personally, after all.

The bronze only spoken to Nirinath outside of "official" duties once or twice, and had even less to do with her rider, so most of his opinion was based off of L'varl's. Therefore, he didn't have much to say. He didn't comment on the fact that much the same could be said for the rider of any color dragon; S'kef seemed to be enjoying himself, and there was no reason to alienate the Weyrleader, particularly because L'varl did agree with him on the matter of Tsuen. L'varl wasn't usually one for gossip, preferring to leave that to green- and blueriders where it belonged, but...well, everyone needed to get their kicks somehow, and apparently today that was to be accomplished through calumny. He could handle that.

The bronzerider had never been much of an expressive person; he had learned early on to keep his emotions to himself until he knew how they would be recieved, but he was finding himself increasingly more and more amused by the direction of their conversation. S'kef's level of confidence was something to respect in itself, he had to admit. One didn't meet too many people in S'kef's situation with this amount of assurance. L'varl was inclined to give him a mental nod of respect. "More than everyone else admitting that, I think she needs to admit it to herself. If nothing else it would start something of a domino effect. Even the most loyal subject would start to question her if she did."

"She all but displayed it for everyone at the damn execution," S'kef pointed out. Not even he was crazy enough do such a thing, screaming for blood like a maniac in front of a conflicted, frightened, and weary crowd. S'kef was not the calmest or most forgiving of men, but there was a time and a place for aggression. Any fool could tell that the Weyr had been utterly exhausted by the investigation, all tired and ready for it to just be over. "It takes an idiot to fan those kinds of flames. If anyone had any doubts concerning the bitch's sanity, they're gone now."

He paused to think about it for a moment. Did Tsuen have any supporters left? At least who weren't as crazy as her? He thought about Emalore for a moment, and if he were in a better humor, he might have smiled. He supposed he could respect both utter loyalty and love, but that was a slice of crazy that he wanted no part of. That was a special kind of devotion...he liked to think that if he ever went crazy, J'ver would do what was ultimately best for himself and dump him. Callous, perhaps...and S'kef knew he would be heartbroken to have to do such a thing himself...but he also couldn't stand the thought of his sweet greenrider suffering just because S'kef had become weak and lost his marbles.

"I like to think that her 'loyal' followers are few in number, in any case," he continued, shifting his gaze to L'varl once more. "If any exist, they're flocking to B'run now. What do you think of him? Do you think he's a real threat to stability?" S'kef had his own opinion, but it would be interesting to hear L'varl's before going into that. S'kef's thoughts? Maybe. B'run wasn't an idiot and he certainly wasn't a coward, and neither was that woman he hung out with...But at the same time, they were both inexperienced, and at the moment outnumbered.  S'kef wasn't willing to ingore them because of that, though.

"No, that's true," he assented. Emotions had been running high that day; anger, sadness, happiness, fear, confusion, regret, whatever you wanted to call it. Someone had to have been feeling it, somewhere within the Weyr and even without. L'varl had never been particularly good at attaching his loyalty to someone beyond what was wise; he wasn't distinctly trusting by nature, and giving someone the benefit of his support was hard-won. He wasn't an open dissenter by any means. That was more effort than it was worth, and frankly foolish to boot. With tensions running high already, people were confused and frightened. The future wasn't clear--never had been, really, but the waters were murkier than they'd been since Katila had come into being.

The bronzerider was confident enough in himself and his dragon to know that, whatever happened, they would be okay. They both had a level of confidence that they hadn't possessed before the exile; living isolated from other dragons for so long might have aided in that, but also having to take part in establishing the hierarchy of the new Weyr when Nirinath's call had eventually come. Korutath had had the most trouble adjusting. Not being the biggest bronze in the Weyr, and certainly not the most aggressive, it was a bit of a shock going from top dog out there on his own to solidly middle-of-the-pack.

He took a moment to respond to S'kef's questions regarding B'run. The bronzerider had never been of particular interest to L'varl, though they obviously had the obligatory shared bond of being bronzeriders. Korutath could make friends with anyone if he truly put his mind to it (which, he felt inclined to point out, he wasn't doing right now), so he'd probably had more conversations with Olemuth than L'varl had had with his rider. "I think he could be problematic if someone were to plant ideas in his head. He doesn't strike me as much of a leader. Doesn't have much of a drive, and from what I've seen, he tries to keep himself out of the limelight." He nodded to himself, satisfied with his evaluation. "Definitely worth keeping an eye on, but I don't think he qualifies as a genuine threat just yet."

''...I agree," S'kef replied, finding L'varl's assessment fair. B'run had come out of nowhere, it seemed. He'd been yet another of Katila's faceless bronzeriders, staying out of trouble and out of the spotlight at all costs. S'kef was as alarmed as he was disgusted by the sudden outburst, but he wasn't willing to dismisss or underestimate the bronzerider offhand. B'run had little background as a leader, but sometimes people could pull off surprising feats while under stress.

Was S'kef being wise to afford his rival this sort of consideration, or was he paranoid?

Ultimately, he just smiled. "I like the way you think," he said, nodding to L'varl before turning to head back down the beach. Tyrrisath continued to watch with only the mildest of interest. "I need to get back to ending my dragon, but this conversation has been very interesting. I hope to see more of you soon." And he was certain he would. He walked away with a certain feeling of self-satisfaction, pleased to know that there were other men in the Weyr who thought like him. He was not nearly so alone as he'd once felt. It would benefit him in the long run, and S'kef fully believed that whatever benefited him ultimately benefited everybody. The fools just didn't know it yet.
