While there was no exact proof that touching the eggs began a bonding process before the dragonets even hatched, some of the Weyrfolk believed it, and so Mevrit was inclined to give it a chance. She was a practical young woman, and while some were dubious about the Touching and others overexcited, she was merely there for the experience. A Gold egg was on the Sands, and all the Gold Candidates were encouraged to touch her. Mevrit would have been just inclined to go touch any other egg, but she decided to put it off until the Gold had been touched first. So, she waited in line patiently behind Rhaedalyn, watching as first Aparicus touched the egg and seemed to whisper something to it, and then her friend.
Mevrit hoped that Rhaedalyn would have a positive experience. Her friend deserved a dragon just as much as any man, and a Gold was her best bet. It was any girl's best bet, since women Impressing fighting dragons seemed to be just as much of a rarity. Girls weren't even on the Sands if there wasn't a Gold egg for them to try and impress. This was their chance, and Mevrit was determined to take it. Having a Gold dragon wasn't really that important in the scheme of things, seeing as Golds were good for making more dragons, and that was about it. But, shells, any dragon was better than none. She was tired of being some Stolen Candidate destined to never Impress. It was her entire purpose for being kidnapped, and this change in her life would be wasted if she didn't snatch a dragon up for herself.
So, while she wished Rhaedalyn luck and would love to see her on a Gold, Mevrit wanted it too. She was not so immodest as to claim that she didn't want the Gold for herself. Mevrit offered a smile that could have been misinterpreted as insincere as Rhaedalyn finally turned away from the Gold egg, but the expression quickly withered away in favor of confusion over Rhaedalyn's response. "Rhaedalyn, you don't know that..." But how could one misinterpret what she felt? Mevrit frowned, a little displeased that Rhaedalyn had been discouraged from the Gold egg. If she didn't Impress the Gold, she wanted Rhaedalyn to. Rhaedalyn was her roommate and friend, one of the precious true ones she had at Katila Weyr. Naturally, Mevrit wanted the best for her.
She waited until Rhaedalyn had walked off to the side to approach the Gold egg, the egg that had seemingly put Rhaedalyn off so much. Mevrit was mildly anxious to touch the shell, but she was far more determined to do just that. She wanted to know the Gold inside, because she needed a dragon. Mevrit knew that she was more than qualified for one. She'd be a sharding good dragonrider because she wanted to be. Removing the frown from her face, she placed her egg on the shell of the egg, laying the palm of her hand flat against its surface.
