Oh shards, Andi was upset. Talian felt a pang of guilt, but he kept a hard face as he wrapped his arms around the girl and pulled her close. "It's okay, Andi," he reassured her. "Just be careful." Good thing talking about the picture distracted her! Talian wasn't very good art being a disciplinarian, and he felt bad making the poor girl cry like that, even if it had been in necessary defense of his dragon.
Talian smiled softly. He normally had little patience for the antics of children, but this was somehow charming. Andi often said she loved him and was always enthusiastic when B'jin brought her around, but looking at the multicolored splotches on this paper, Talian knew that the little girl had actually taken the time to think about him. Shards, she'd taken more time to think about him than most of the people he'd known for most of his life, even though it took a few minutes for that fact to sink in.
"Oh, wow.." he murmured. "You got all three of us," he said, looking from the paper to the girl and back to the paper again. Without warning, he wrapped his arm around her once more and squeezed her tightly. "I love it, Andi," he assured her, allowing himself a small, tickled laugh.
Fellis flickered from the top of Khaduceth's head and appeared on the table. He crawled to the edge of the table and extended his neck, sniffing at the girl cautiously. She was too excitable for him to risk hopping in her lap like he did for Valerian, but Talian was awfully pleased with her right now, so the flit decided to risk a close encounter. Talian smiled and held out one hand for Fellis and clicked his tongue, encouraging the creature to step onto it. The fire lizard nervously obeyed and hold on tight as Talian moved his hand over to Andi.
"Be gentle with him," he reminded her. He imagined it would be a nice treat for her; Fellis had never allowed her to touch him before. Fellis cheeped cautiously at Andi and pressed himself close to Talian's hand, but he obeyed nonetheless. Talian reassured him quietly and smiled.
Please remind her that my name is 'Khaduceth', not Caguseth the brown dragonet said, crawling across the floor and setting his head on the corner of Talian's knee that was unoccupied. The dragonet purred, but since Talian lacked a free hand to pet him with, he would have to wait.
"'Khaduceth'," Talian said, nodding to the dragonet. It was a gentle reminder, spoken more in a doctor's voice than anything, but Talian always had a pretty good bedside manner.
Talian suddenly realized that he was covered in critters. He turned his head towards B'jin and beamed at him, monetarily overwhelmed by the smothering outpouring of love. Fellis and Khaduceth were practically radiating it, but it was easy to tell with them; they were linked to his mind and couldn't fake love if they wanted to, not like his mother and father and his shitty friends back at Fort.
It was easy to tell with dragons and fire lizards, but people were different. People could lie and people have questionable motives. Right then, however, Talian felt genuinely loved. He felt like he had a real sister to go with his real dad.
"Best birthday ever," Talian said softly.
