"Oi!" B'jin barked, his words crashing through the air just after Valerian finished making his dig at Lymsleia. "Enough with the snarking attitude you lot!" Irritation clear on the greenrider's face, he gave Valerian a dirty look before sharing it with the rest of the class. While B'jin would certainly never have the effect G'rem could claim, he could follow a close second when he wanted. While B'jin wasn't exactly angry he was highly irritated by the lack of respect being shown to both classmates and teachers. All else aside, he'd have liked to believe that they each possessed some -- somewhere. Or the skills to at least pretend they did. They were all, were they not, Journey men and women! "Did all those years of education teach you nothing?" He snapped, loath to turn G'rem's sex class into one on basic manners and respect.
Eyes dark with irritable anger flashed back at Valerian as he waved for B'jin to continue. As likely to be a comment enticing him to do so from Larrikith as it was likely to be the boy's own idea didn't stop B'jin from kicking his dragon mentally. She simply rumbled softly at the man, though her eyes were flashing with sparks of red and orange, indications that his irritation went deeper than his snapping words if the dragon was picking up on it. She ruffled her wings lightly, and B'jin adjusted his stance, still heavily favouring his bruised leg. Sharding tables!
"Yes, I was. If you are all done snapping childishly at your class mates." B'jin liked Valerian, he was a great deal of fun and the young man's sense of humour amused him as much as it delighted Larrikith; the dig wasn't so much at him as it was B'jin being irritable. He got enough snarking attitude from Larrikith without being surrounded by it when all he was meant to do was babble for the class to get D'ren off his back about making a scene in the dining hall the other morning; never mind causing whomever owned the bedroom to have a fit about the state it had been left in. Neither of which B'jin was at all remorse about, but, unlike Larrikith, B'jin knew when to keep his mouth shut and do what he was told.
Brown eyes shifted back to the young woman that had spoken, and he nodded slightly. "At any rate, Valerian is correct, Lymsleia." He didn't bother to elaborate. B'jin's conducts outside of flights were particularly rare and he didn't feel like indulging the class in such matters any more than he had to.
"Weyrmated is the term used by Weyrfolk to indicate a mated pair. Similar to marriage, I suppose, except more liberal. After all, a green will not always be won by the same male, some partnered humans ride same sex dragons, and you get the odd couple who hook up with a non-rider." He paused for a moment, shifting his weight as his fingers danced lightly over the tender bruise on his thigh. "Weyrmated dragons don't necessarily indicate Weyrmated humans, though that is usually the case, the same as weyrmated humans don't always mean the same is felt by the dragons. Riders with same sex dragons are somewhat less common, since they don't always mesh well. Bonding to a non-rider varies."
Larrikith shifted irritably, with a snort, and B'jin glanced at her before continuing. "Generally speaking, such partnerships are heterosexual, with a family involvement. The non-riding partner is usually pretty placid about their lovers requirements as a dragonrider and a dragonbonded. While it is possible to ground a green from Flying, it is incredibly difficult and uniquely painful. Excluding Renewed Hope, every greenrider at Katila has three turns of suppressed Flights up their sleeves. If you're no good at maths, that is approximately 9-12 flights on average." Larrikith shifted again, and B'jin stroked her nose gently; those had been horrible times though they had gotten off easy, with Larrikith only flying four times a year. Others flew far more regularly and while very few of the Survivors would bring up their time whilst banished, (and B'jin would side step some subjects with mindbogglingly determination) he was generally fairly content to talk about his time alone with Larrikith and Nemall. Larrikith snorted again, eyes flashing irritably.
"Samesex partnerships with a nonrider are somewhat more rare. Mostly, I assume, because of the lack of family glue going on. It is incredibly difficult to balance a lover and a dragon, when said lover doesn't have their own to worry about. It can create friction, and jealousy; this is particularly true when children result from flights. Until someone is bonded to a dragon of their own, they cannot possibly understand the depth of emotions shared. As a result, lovers can often feel scorned, forgotten or ignored. That, however, doesn't mean it is impossible. I was weyrmated to a fellow Harper for nineteen turns."
Was. Larrikith aired to any and all willing to hear, her tone somewhere between smug and disgusted. B'jin shot her a dry, tired look, before turning his attention back to the class.
"Questions?"
