Hello, and welcome to the SPW Murder Mystrery!
Our Weyrleader D’ren is currently in the infirmary, suffering from what appears to be a life-threatening poisoning! Weyrsecond N’gelt quickly resigned his position, handing it over to the more experienced brownrider S’kef.
Here are some links following the action:
D'ren is Attacked
S'kef is Pronounced Acting Weyrleader
S'kef Announces the Investigation
You may be wondering what this means for the players and the characters themselves. The power transition from one of BlueD’s characters to another is a stylistic choice made to accommodate SPW’s development, but that doesn’t mean the event is for admins only. Read on to learn about how you and your characters can participate!
The Investigation
S’kef has announced a public investigation, calling on everyone in the Weyr to help him find and destroy the man (or woman) responsible for the attack on D’ren. The Weyr’s residents are encouraged to keep an eye out for any possible clues, to cooperate with any official inquiries about their own behavior and motives, and to approach the new Acting Weyrleader if they desire a more active role in the investigation.
Over the course of the event, clues will be distributed throughout the site. As more clues are accumulated and analyzed, suspects will be named and questioned. Ultimately, once every clue is found and every piece of evidence analyzed, an accusation will be made and the offender will be punished. Players can earn marks and other prizes throughout the event by finding clues, reporting evidence, and lending their skills to the investigation.
The event will continue until the offender is brought to justice, whether it takes an IC week or an IC turn! Will the assassination plot become a menacing new background for Katila’s politics, or will the Weyr’s inhabitants flush the offender out of hiding in time for New Turn’s Eve?
Once the event is completed but before the culprit is revealed, a Whodunit? Form will be posted here for each member to fill out and submit to Katila Weyr. The form will contain a simple series of questions concerning the plot, most important being the player’s guess for who is guilty. Players will receive prizes for how many questions they guess correctly, with the grand prize being awarded to anyone so fortunate as to figure it all out! Prizes will be announced at the same time the form is distributed.
Clues
Clues are everywhere. They consist of physical evidence, gossip, alibis, and other pieces of information that will be helpful to the investigation. Clues have been written in advance and are stashed safely in the admin boards, where they have all been labeled with a tag indicating on which IC board they will appear.
Each thread in a given IC board has a 50% chance (determined at random) to yield a clue. Some boards will have multiple clues, but some won’t have any at all. Clues will be delivered via the Random Event account, and the character(s) present may choose to report the evidence or not. Clues may appear at any point in the thread. There is also a chance that other random events may appear in these threads as well, so stay alert.
Occasionally, the admin team will also provide a ‘free’ clue, which will be added to the evidence tracker as normal, with ‘Admin Team’ listed as a source. These clues represent evidence located by NPCs, and while they do not count towards the overall completion percentage, they are intended to help move the game along. ‘Freebie’ clues will
The Evidence Tracker
The Evidence Tracker, located beneath this post, will be frequently updated with all the news concerning the investigation. All evidence collected by characters will be posted there, along with a completion percentage that will indicate how close the leadership is to making a formal accusation. It will also include any other major developments as they happen.
To report evidence, please fill out the Evidence form located at the top of the Evidence Tracker and post it in this thread. Players are also welcome to discuss the evidence among themselves and even announce their characters’ personal opinions on the matter. Just please remember to keep IC and OOC opinions separate! The Weyr is sure to be full of gossip, and we certainly hope to see opinions flying, but just because you are aware of something doesn’t mean that your character is.
Each clue turned in will earn 50 marks for each character involved in its discovery. This includes only characters who posted in the thread before the clue was discovered and who were still present at the time of discovery.
Also remember that the plot is taking place in the middle of huge social unrest. There will be many other IC opportunities as well…
Such as:
-Healers are needed to help look after D’ren. Master Healer Talian has been barred from the case. Will someone else step up to lead the team?
-Bronzeriders are unlikely to take the ascension of a brown Weyrleader lying down. S’kef hasn’t said a word about stepping down, either! Is he going to be a tyrant, or is he just a little brownrider stepping into a bronzerider’s rightful place?
-Ranks are likely to be rearranged with a new Weyrleader in power. Of course, no one knows if S’kef is going to be able to hang on to power once (if) D’ren recovers. Are your character ambitious enough to take that chance?
-Supporters are certain to appear! S’kef has promised to break Tsuen’s power and take the Katilan outcasts back home. The stolen will be allowed to return home if they wish, and the riders will once again know the luxury of the North.
-Dissenters are just as inevitable. S’kef is a cruel man with dubious motives and a bad reputation. Do you trust him to keep his promises? Can you forgive him of his past crimes? Do you even want to go home?
-Secrets that were not meant to see the light of day may very well appear as the Weyr grapples for evidence to condemn the killer! Do you want something about your character to be unearthed? PM Bluedragon or Katila Weyr and let us know!
Disclaimer
Certain parts of this plot are already determined. The guilty party has already been chosen by the admin team and no guilt will be forced upon the characters of any player who has not volunteered. There may be implications of guilt and IC accusations, but no player character will be punished without the player's consent. Only the guilty party, as arranged by his or her role player, and NPC characters will be subject to punishment.
Players who wish to give their consent for their character to be seriously implicated or punished are welcome to PM Katila Weyr or BlueDragon and discuss it.
The guilty party's player and certain staff members are already aware of certain aspects of the plot. BlueDragon, who knows the locations of all the clues in addition to the ultimate outcome, is not eligible to receive marks rewards or any other prizes. Staff members and players who know certain details in the plot will be restricted in their potential winnings as well.
While the identity of the assassin is already known by the admin team, that does not mean that player participation is pointless. Other aspects of the plot are yet to be determined. Remember, the admin team are acting as hosts in this murder mystery! Players are just as important.
Finally, it should be noted that by participating in this event, you are opening your character to incrimination and use in clue placement. For example, another player may receive a clue stating that X character was in X location at X time, therefore clearing them of guilt. While this will always be as gentle and noninvasive as possible, it can amount to mild powerplay.
If you would rather not participate on one or all of your characters, thereby eliminating this potential situation, please fill out the below form and PM it to Katila Weyr.
And that’s it! If you have any questions, PM a staff member or post here. We also want to encourage discussion, so let the speculation fly! Enjoy, and welcome to the SPW Murder Mystery!
