R’nd slowed out of his sprint until he was down to a walk and he stretched his arms and legs as he went until the call to gather came. He was breathing harder than he would have liked though that was his fault for both being a bit out of shape and pushing himself more than he likely needed to for a first practice. But he wanted to show he was a hard worker and while he still didn’t have a clear image of R’nya in mind just yet, he didn’t want to disappoint the man that was now his wingleader. One deep breath after the other and he was starting to cool down, just in time to hear how they fared, and it didn’t seem too well.
When B’jin came over and slumped against him, R’nd found himself wanting to do nothing more than drop to the ground and hug the man, reassure him that the worst was over for now. It was a little odd but at the same time he had always had a need to look after his friends and this didn’t seem any different. But when he was called out for not helping B’jin during the exercises like he had thought about doing, R’nd suddenly felt like a failure. He tried to smile reassuringly every time he caught movement indicating B’jin was about to glance up at him but he frowned in silent contemplation otherwise. He should have helped in some way, even kept pace with B’jin. What kind of friend, and not-weyrmate was he? He knew the reason he had given, believing his friend’s pride wouldn’t want the help but did that matter after all? R’nd suspected R’nya had the right of it. How could he leave someone, anyone, behind struggling?
Right then, R’nd suddenly didn’t care about protocol or if he’d get in trouble as he gave into the temptation of moments earlier and carefully dropped to his knees behind B’jin. He wrapped his arms lightly around the greenrider and whispered by his ear in a shaky voice full of shame for not being there for him, “I’m sorry, B’jin.” If nothing else, he’d be his friend’s pillar of strength – though that strength was currently questionable with how hard he was pushing himself – until they were dismissed for the day and B’jin could take his leave from him, the selfish bluerider only concerned about his own image. He let his arms drop away, worried B’jin wouldn’t want to be held and shifted enough that he could at least lightly rub his palm in circles over his friend’s back. Whether it would help relax him or not was hard to say but he had to try and do something, especially since he had also forgotten water and couldn’t offer any to someone who clearly wouldn’t mind it.
R’nd spared only a glance to the dragons taking off, knowing Ayyonth would relay anything out of the ordinary, though it came far sooner than he thought. When he was told Larrikith was being signalled out for her unique way of taking off, R’nd still resisted turning to see the dragons. R’nya might now have him on the ground with B’jin but he still deserved the respect of his attention being fully on him. It was hard to do when Ayyonth answered Xyreith’s question without hesitation. Larrikith is my mate and in my wing. I would never leave her behind. The stupid dragon was showing him up! Not really, R’nd knew, since Ayyonth spoke his mind when and how he wanted to but at least one half of them looked good. He hoped.
Ayyonth knew Larrikith would be touched but also yell at him later for going back to her but as he said, he wouldn’t leave her behind. She was a grown dragon and didn’t need coddling but he didn’t like seeing her in any sort of pain and humiliation counted as a sort of pain in his books, at least with Larrikith. R’nd was fun to tease and humiliate with the right crowd, same with some of his clutchmates but that was neither here nor there. He landed near Larrikith and took off when she did, hovering for three wing beats and then lowering again. It was good practice and exercise regardless of how perfect a takeoff was and Ayyonth saw no shame in joining her.
