Hello loves! While I haven't been writing, I have been working on updating some issues that have been hanging around on the layout! The Character change box is now at the bottom of the page, beside the up/down arrows! Green and Gold dragon flight dates have been shifted to the bottom of the page, where the (useless!) discord widget was located. Where the dragon flights were in the header, is now replaced by a Monthly Event box! This will be updated at the start of each month, with a fun mini-event you can take part in, if you want to! Hair: In her younger days, Dessa would wear her hair long. In more recent times, however, she has a preference for a shorter style, keeping it between her ears and shoulder length. Generally, it is straight with a slight wave to it, but she has been known to style it so that it is unnaturally wavy. Her hair is of a dark brown, almost black colour that highlights with sun bleaching to have a red tint. It is soft and silky and slips free of any restraints used to try and control it.
Height: 5'6
General Appearance: Dessa is a woman who carries her age and the weight of her years well. She has the stretchmarks and light scarring that belies the fact that she has had several children and more than a few pregnancies during her younger years, but her body is slim, strong and a source of pride for the woman. She has long limbs, with a gentle softness to it that hides the strength she’s built up over the Turns by doing the manual labour required of her plants and their maintenance.
Preferring to keep her hands clean and dirt free, Dessa most often does her gardening with gloves on. This causes some folks surprise when they find out she runs her own little herbalist shop, but she takes pride in her ability to look one part, and fulfil another. Her clothing is always the best quality that she can afford – never the most expensive, but not cheap scraps, either – and she bathes regularly.
Dessa’s face is very round, with neat features that fit it nicely, but have just enough quirk to give her personality: her nose is a little big, her lips a little pink, her eyebrows a little pale. She likes the way she looks, though, and takes pride in who she is. A lack of self confidence was not something Dessa has ever truly been struck down by, though she’s had her moments of insecurity.
With a small bust and small hips; not ‘narrow’ in the traditional sense, but certainly on the small side, Dessa carried all of her pregnancies high and to the front of her, making her often feel like a overweight cow. Her feet are on the smaller side, and she enjoys going barefoot when she can, though she knows this causes them to become quite dirty. As a result, she takes great care to scrub her feet well before bed. Her fingernails are always delicately manicured, and she keeps them just a little bit longer than the tip of her fingers.
Dressing Style: Since leaving her lifestyle as a Lady, Dessa has taken on the dressing style of someone who has to be more aware of her money and where it goes. She has a tendency to wear sturdy, practical clothing. This is usually composted of calico pants and a soft cotton shirt; these usually vary in a huge array of colours that she chooses from to suit her mood.
When there are Gathers or she wants to feel especially pretty or ladylike, Dessa has a handful of her old dresses she had commissioned when she was a Lady and managed to ferry away with herself. They are mostly long gowns and flowing skirts, with some short or long sleeved varieties.
With either of her outfit choices, she will wear either soft slippers (if the day is dry) or sturdy heeled boots for the wet or cool weather. If she is in the garden, she prefers to go barefoot.

Dessa loves being in the garden, and while her home in Telgar doesn’t actually have a yard, she’s managed to turn her roof into a little garden for the months without snow, while moving everything into the safety of inside during the white months. She could spend all day wandering from pot to pot, with dirt on her hands and under her nails as she encourages each bush and flower to grow and bloom so she can sell them in her store. Inside her store, she takes pride in keeping up displays and making sure that the people who come to her for help, are able to get what they need.
Helping people is something Dessa takes pride in, and it gives her a feeling of joy and satisfaction. She loves knowing that the plants she grows are able to help couples have the baby they have longed for or cure the case of pneumonia that was plaguing a loved one. She feels privileged and special when people come back to tell her of their success stories, or send in friends or family so that they might also benefit from her knowledge and love of plants.
Despite her welcoming embrace when it comes to letting people into her store and listening to their stories, Dessa is incredibly private and what few friends she has know little of her life before she arrived in Telgar, or where she goes when she takes time away from the store. What is known is that she enjoys quiet company, and will always welcome children into her embrace, loving to listen to them babble about their day and antics. Children are one of the very few who can easily get Dessa to laugh and smile as if she has no cares in the world.
Habits/Mannerisms: Dessa moves slowly, with a regal quality, but it is primarily so she can both collect her thoughts and get a good idea of what she’s moving into. She doesn’t particularly enjoy having to think on the go, so if she moves slowly, she has more time to come up with solutions and the like.

Likes:
Vesse’s Family: Dessa adores her second daughter, the man she married, and the family she married into. She’s very pleased with the choice she made in her daughter’s husband and that Melver agreed to it. Nothing makes her quite as happy as spending time with her daughter and her grandchildren, or the enjoyment she gets out of her little home and store, which were a gift from the couple after their first child was born.
Gardening: Dessa always loved her little garden when she was married to Melver, and that hasn’t changed despite her change in location. Now her garden is mostly situated on the top of her small building, where it gets some sunlight. The herbs are carefully cultivated and harvested. In the winter, the majority of the pots move into her home where she does her best to keep them alive by setting them in the sunlight or up on the roof during the day and bringing them in at night. The exercise keeps her fit and stronger than she looks.
Helping People: Her store started because she wanted to garden, but it remained because she found she thoroughly enjoyed helping the people that came to see her. She loves being able to help them fix some of their issues with just a handful of selected herbs; she especially enjoys when men – and rarely a woman – come in seeking something to help with getting pregnant. She loves talking to them about known experiences and wishing them well. Sometimes they even come by again to tell her they were successful, and that a baby has been borne. That brings her more joy than she ever thought it could.
Dislikes:
Her (ex) Father-In-Law: Even though, technically, he is to thank for her current and enjoyable lifestyle, Dessa still holds a great deal of distaste for him. She’s loathe to actually call it hatred, because that is such a strong word and a waste of good emotion, but if she’s honest with herself, she hates the man. She can’t stand the man and his snide arrogance, especially since the next wife he chose for his son – a girl barely older than Melver’s own daughters – quickly produced a son and Melver’s father seemed to take all the credit for that. Dessa isn’t sure if its her own snideness coming through, but she has a feeling the boy is Melver’s brother, not his son.
Too much quiet: After going from a large family, to building her own family, to living with her daughter’s family, Dessa doesn’t handle the quiet very well. Granted, there are days when she enjoys sitting down with a mug of mulled wine while she does the accounting, but for the most part, she likes having the shop door propped open so she can hear the children playing in the street and the snippets of casual conversation as people walk by. Nights are usually the worst; Dessa doesn’t want to share her life with a man again, but even after all the Turns, she isn’t used to the resounding silence and space of having a bed to herself.
Intimacy: Dessa has given up on sex; she has slept with a few men over the Turns since her husband remarried, but she hasn’t found anything worth getting excited about – or returning to. While she can bring herself to climax, she hasn’t found any man capable of doing the job for her and has simply settled on pleasuring herself when she feels the itch, rather than seeking out an attractive but ultimately useless man. She honestly doesn’t even blame them; Dessa hardly thinks they can all be so useless, so she’s decided it is some weird and annoying quirk of her own. She really wants to have an enjoyable intimate experience, but since she’s almost forty and it hasn’t happened yet, she’s pretty sure other women are just making up shit by this point.
Strengths:
Independent: A personality trait that was enhanced by the path her life took, Dessa is a strong and independent woman, who isn’t afraid to stand up for herself and what she believes in. She isn’t someone who goes out of her way to buck the system or cause ripples, but she has long since grown past the point of needing a husband to protect and nurture her. She is more than capable of providing for herself, and in the future, hopes to pay her son-in-law for the home he bought for her. Not because she believes he expects it, but because she wants to be free from any strings.
Proud: Dessa isn’t one to walk around with airs of arrogance, but she is proud of herself, who she is, and where she has gotten herself in life. She is proud of her children, and she is proud of her grandchildren. She is proud of her home, her shop, her gardens and her life in general. She has very few regrets about the way things have turned out, and while she would no doubt do some things differently, she overall wouldn’t change anything. After all, that adventure is what made her who she is, and put her where she is.
Observant: Dealing with the people that she has, for the past several Turns, has honed Dessa’s ability to read people and situations. She can by no means dig up their deepest secrets from looking at them, but she can certainly read emotions and see when someone is lying or attempting to hide something. Generally, she doesn’t pry any more than she needs to in order to best deliver the herbs they need, but sometimes curiosity is something that gets the better of her! Dessa enjoys the secrets she collects, and she keeps them safely locked away in her mind, where no one can take them from her.
Flaws:
Reserved: Dessa isn’t one to open up to just anyone; she has few friends and fewer still confidants. While she takes in the secrets gifted to her and holds them dear, she refuses to release her own, bottling them up and keeping them safe in the depths of her mind. While her emotions are not hidden, she doesn’t go around emoting like some people she knows. Generally, when she’s happy it is displayed in a look of contentment or a small smile, while displeasure is a mere flattening of her lips. She feels strongly but expresses with great reservation; she doesn’t welcome friendships the way some women do and tends to express scepticism and wariness when people try to get to know her.
Blunt: Dessa doesn’t mince words, and this has a tendency to give her a blunt and frank way of speaking. As a rule, it doesn’t bother her, but it does mean she has to really stop and think about how to phrase what she wants to say when dealing with a new customer, lest she scare them off. She also has a tendency to become exasperated with stupid people, and does her best to avoid them; people whom she deems as ‘intolerably stupid’ she goes out of her way to shoo from her store and not invite back.
Humourless: Technically, Dessa isn’t humourless; she just has a really quirky sense of humour that most people don’t get and she finds most people’s idea of humour to be ‘intolerably stupid’, meaning she tends to stare with a flat look when someone shares a joke or tries to make her laugh. Dessa loves humour, but she loves her type of humour and not most other peoples.

Despite the fact that Melver isn’t in line for an inheritance, what with being the third son, his father is determined that he have a son of his own to pass on the small property in the future. Dessa learns she has one more Turn to produce a son for her husband, or she will be cast aside.
Six months later, after thinking about it a lot, Dessa confronts Melver, who is outraged. He promises he will speak to his father and fix things up. He has come to deeply love his daughters, and he is still as enchanted by Dessa as he was when they were children. Dessa herself is torn; she doesn’t want to leave her children (notably the elder two) but is also not completely distraught by the opportunity to rebuild her life to her own desires.
727.01.15 & 25: A couple of months before Dessa turns twenty-six, when her children are aged just five to nine (or thereabouts), Melver’s father finally wins the battle that has been raging between the two men. When Dessa failed to fall pregnant for a fifth time (primarily because she’d told Melver she didn’t want to try any more for a son, and Melver was happy with his daughters) Melver’s father finally whaled away at the man enough for him to give way. The fact that his father threatened to kick the whole family onto the streets if Melver didn’t see it his way, probably had a lot to do with it.
Dessa agreed to step aside and allow Melver to remarry, on the condition that she could stay within the home until her two elder daughters had been married and moved out. Since it would only be another handful of Turns, Melver’s father agreed, as did Melver.
733.XX.XX & 33: While her daughters are both young – just fifteen and sixteen – Dessa (who played a strong and demanding role in choosing their betrothed) is content with them being married at the end of the Turn, particularly since it means she will be able to leave the household. Her two younger daughters, both of whom were raised by wet-nurses, have little relationship with their mother and she is happy to leave them in their father’s care alongside their step-mother, with whom they seem to get along well enough. (Comparatively, both Demva and Vesse are outraged by the change in living arrangements that happened when they were pre-teens).
Vesse, with whom she had been closest to, managed to charm her husband (and his father) into letting Dessa move into their new home with them. Dessa is impressed, but also enamoured by how her daughter’s husband and his father seem to think the very sun rises and sets on Vesse, and she is relieved, glad her daughter has clearly found a family that won’t set her aside if she fails to produce a son.
736.XX.XX & 35: Dessa is absolutely enchanted when Vesse falls pregnant, and then gives birth to a healthy son. She takes to being a grandmother with the same enthusiasm as she did mothering her first two daughters. Unfortunately, as her daughter’s little family grew by one, she felt it was time for her to move on, just a bit. She was ready to live her own life, now. She spoke to her daughter, who in turn smiled mysteriously and told her they had already planned for such. That night, when Vesse’s husband and father-in-law were free at dinner, they informed her that they had purchased a small home and shop-front for her in Telgar Hold. She would be able to support herself there, and enjoy herself, while still being close enough to visit as regularly as she wished. Dessa is thrilled, and begins plans to move out almost immediately, much to their amusement.
738.XX.XX & 37: Comfortably at home in Telgar Hold, Dessa has made a quiet name for herself as a place that can be visited by anyone looking for herbal remedies. She mainly produces concoctions that enhance libido and encourage fertility, but she also has a black-market side, where she will provide both men and women with the means to end an unwanted or dangerous pregnancy, though due to Hold opinions she keeps such information carefully guarded. It takes a lot of hoops to get her to provide the herbs that are desired for such circumstances.
739.06.XX & 38: Coming home from visiting Vesse, who has just had her second child (another boy, much to Dessa’s amusement) Dessa comes across a young woman and child. Their weariness and distrust intrigue her and she works hard to encourage them to join her on her trip back to Telgar Hold. It’s much safer to travel together than alone, even if ruffians aren’t exactly a threat to the Pernese traveller.

When Dessa failed to fall pregnant for a fifth time (primarily because she’d told Melver she didn’t want to try any more for a son, and Melver was happy with his daughters) Melver’s father finally whaled away at the man enough for him to give way. The fact that his father threatened to kick the whole family onto the streets if Melver didn’t see it his way, probably had a lot to do with it.
Dessa agreed to step aside and allow Melver to remarry, on the condition that she could stay within the home until her two elder daughters had been married and moved out. Since it would only be another handful of Turns, Melver’s father agreed, as did Melver.
733.XX.XX & 33: While her daughters are both young – just fifteen and sixteen – Dessa (who played a strong and demanding role in choosing their betrothed) is content with them being married at the end of the Turn, particularly since it means she will be able to leave the household. Her two younger daughters, both of whom were raised by wet-nurses, have little relationship with their mother and she is happy to leave them in their father’s care alongside their step-mother, with whom they seem to get along well enough. (Comparatively, both Demva and Vesse are outraged by the change in living arrangements that happened when they were pre-teens).
Vesse, with whom she had been closest to, managed to charm her husband (and his father) into letting Dessa move into their new home with them. Dessa is impressed, but also enamoured by how her daughter’s husband and his father seem to think the very sun rises and sets on Vesse, and she is relieved, glad her daughter has clearly found a family that won’t set her aside if she fails to produce a son.
736.XX.XX & 35: Dessa is absolutely enchanted when Vesse falls pregnant, and then gives birth to a healthy son. She takes to being a grandmother with the same enthusiasm as she did mothering her first two daughters. Unfortunately, as her daughter’s little family grew by one, she felt it was time for her to move on, just a bit. She was ready to live her own life, now. She spoke to her daughter, who in turn smiled mysteriously and told her they had already planned for such. That night, when Vesse’s husband and father-in-law were free at dinner, they informed her that they had purchased a small home and shop-front for her in Telgar Hold. She would be able to support herself there, and enjoy herself, while still being close enough to visit as regularly as she wished. Dessa is thrilled, and begins plans to move out almost immediately, much to their amusement.
738.XX.XX & 37: Comfortably at home in Telgar Hold, Dessa has made a quiet name for herself as a place that can be visited by anyone looking for herbal remedies. She mainly produces concoctions that enhance libido and encourage fertility, but she also has a black-market side, where she will provide both men and women with the means to end an unwanted or dangerous pregnancy, though due to Hold opinions she keeps such information carefully guarded. It takes a lot of hoops to get her to provide the herbs that are desired for such circumstances.
739.06.XX & 38: Coming home from visiting Vesse, who has just had her second child (another boy, much to Dessa’s amusement) Dessa comes across a young woman and child. Their weariness and distrust intrigue her and she works hard to encourage them to join her on her trip back to Telgar Hold. It’s much safer to travel together than alone, even if ruffians aren’t exactly a threat to the Pernese traveller.

Education Details: Dessa has the appropriate education for a Lady of standing. She was given lessons in spelling, penmanship, writing, numbers (including accounting), as well as etiquette and social standards for presentation and conversation.

Dessa smiled absently to herself as the horse pulled the small cart along the well-travelled path. She had enjoyed visiting with her son-in-law and daughter, as she ever did, spoiling her grandchildren and enjoying their sticky kisses and sweet voices. The eldest, just barely two, was the light of Dessa’s life and she delighted in the way the child doted on her. The infant, another little boy, was a beautiful child who promised to be as delightful as his sibling. Dessa was proud of her daughter and she was proud of the life the girl was leading and wished her all the happiness on Pern.
Her attention was snagged when the horse snorted, and Dessa looked up curiously, wondering what had caused the animal to react. She was rather surprised when she saw what looked like a pair of youngsters walking along the road ahead of her. Dessa blinked, and tilted her head, considering. There were not usually lone travellers. She was a bit of an oddity, travelling by herself with her sturdy horse and little cart. Dessa didn’t believe in hiring a guard when she was quite capable of being intimidating when the time called for it, and besides, who would want to rob her? She was dressed comfortably but didn’t exactly reek of Marks, and while her horse was sturdy, he was old. Her cart was small, and usually filled with herbs she was taking to sell in her daughter’s home town as well as her own travelling items – clothes, primarily.

Dessa figured it was probably the latter, since the mild breeze was blowing into her face, meaning the sound was carrying away from them. She pulled her horse to a standstill and tilted her ear into the wind. If they were talking, it wasn’t loud enough to carry, which seemed strange to her. Usually children were loud and chatty when walking together, and she figured they were probably heading down to Telgar from one of the farms within the vicinity. They were still a couple of days out, but she’d known parents to send older kids off to the Hold to pick up items when the adults were too busy to make the trip.
Giving the reins a gentle flick, Dessa encouraged her horse back into his lazy walk. She watched them as she got closer, deciding she’d offer them a place in the back of her cart in exchange for any stories they had to tell, when she got close enough to realise it was a woman and child, not two children. Her eyebrows lifted somewhat, but Dessa smoothed her features before calling out a friendly greeting, watching curiously the way they reacted to the sound of her voice.
