He watched the hatching with great interest after he climbed to his feet from being knocked over. He was still grumbling beneath his breath, a little bit of acid in his tone as hazel eyes glared briefly at the bronze who had shoved him. So many hatchlings were making their appearance now and finding their bondeds, leaving Madelan even more certain that he was going to fail at this like he did much of his life. He sighed and ground his teeth together as more eggs shattered all around him. A second brown cracked egg near him causing him to back up as the smaller than average creature lost his footing once or twice before finding his bonded in a boy across the sands.
A resounding crack brought Madelan's attention towards a small grouping of eggs to see another bronze make his appearance to be followed by another brown. The candidate's shoulders straightened, his mind bringing back all of his confidence as he watched the regal-looking bronze standing as if surveying his kingdom.Bronze02 was solid, already showing the clean lines and size that he would grow into as he walked sedately towards the group of candidates. Brown03 huffed at the ridiculousness that he thought was his brother before flouncing behind the bronze. The little brown would stop suddenly, almost so fast that he took a tumble, and peered at an ecstatic young fellow.
Madelan grinned slightly at the arrogance that was plainly seen in the bronze as two more blues broke shell before flailing wildly through the girls. He shook his head as a few hopefuls reached out to be swatted away and ignored. The blues found their boys in short order. Three green burst from the shells, running amuck to barrel through the already abused girls. Two found theirs quickly while the last decided that she needed to sniff and snuffle every single boy before hers stepped out with a roll of his eyes.
A murmured broke out as the gold egg finally started wiggling and waggling, the occupant clearly ready to come out. It still amazed Madelan that she had waited so long and he watched with hooded eyes as Mizeath moved a bit of sand away from the shell. The dragonet that emerged from the shell was serene, delicate, and tiny with a hide of gold so pale she almost looked white. Madelan sucked in his breath quickly, wondering if there was a fault in her but no. He could clearly see the patches of a buttery gold that matched Mizeath's hide slipping in and out of the gold's paleness.
She was quite stunning to look at and Madelan knew she was absolute perfection even from where he stood with the boys. A frown grew between his eyebrows as first Mizeath and then Ameris shifted towardsGold01 to steer her towards the girls. She seemed reluctant, almost hesitant before she went, feet making a detour around the group of boys with unsure steps. What was wrong with her? Was she sick?
As she circled the boys and finally the girls, over and over Madelan's confusion grew as the gold's panic started leaking out and she started to shrieked. She had been there, the little gold shrieked, she had touched her shell and they had spoken and now she was gone. What had happened? She had been so special and so nice and now she wasn't there! Was she not good enough for the girl who'd talked to her? The gold grew increasingly panicked and began to charge through the girls, tossing them aside as she searched for that mind who had been there and no longer was.
Madelan's head began to ache with her shrieks and cries, squinting his eyes before they widened with a gasp. In her panic the gold barreled into a curious bronze, the pair tumbling end over end over end as their talons flashed for purchase. Their screeches of anger and pain echoed through the weyr as they fought to separate themselves and failing. A low keening came from Mizeath as the pair finally stopped their tumble, both bleeding profusely from different points of their bodies before blinking between together.
Madelan tried to ignore the prickle of tears in the back of his eyes at the absolute waste of the two dragonets. His sadness was forgotten as another blue hatched into the subdued world. That couldn't bode well for the fellow as he made his entrance after the spectacular exits of his siblings.Blue09 squeaked at the heaviness of the world before slinking off to find his boy in a sea of faces. Another green cracked shell, revealing a mossy-colored hide broken up with green the color of new growth. She took a swipe at the shell next to her, a little annoyed when the wriggling of it had bumped into her and her aim was good enough to give her green sister some assistance.
Green11 scolded the other green in a barrage of chitters and chirps before stomp off. Green10 would not be outdone and she bounced to her feet so fast she tripped over her own wings before finally finding her feet. She took off quick as a bolt of lightning, swerving through legs before slamming into a slender boy hard enough to send him tumbling. She crooned softly to him as her eyes lit up with impression.
Green11 followed suit quickly finding her own bonded and not realizing that another green with a blue had cracked shell. They were the last of the eggs, there would be no duds for Mizeath's clutch this time even if it had its own share of tragedy. Madelan waited on his toes as the blue and the green searched through the boys, moving this way and that as they came to a stop in front of two almost simultaneously.
The candidate's hazel eyes moved up to find Ameris stroking Mizeath's shoulder lightly as the gold blew air softly out of her nose. There were tears on the weyrwoman's eyes as she turned away from the hatching sand to start preparations for the hatching celebration. Madelan wondered how fun it would be with the pall of a betweened gold and bronze hanging over it. He didn't envy the blue who'd hatched right on the heels of it. The candidate shrugged his shoulders lightly before turning away with the rest.
Now it was time for him to drink himself stupid.
