Helyna hummed as she finished rubbing oil into Iliyith’s gleaming hide; there was just enough time to go tidy up the harnesses and clean herself up before dinner, thanks to Vondal’s help with the task. She was pleased that he didn’t seem quite as afraid of her beautiful dragon these days, though she noted he preferred to work well away from her mouth still. Helyna scratched her eye ridge and the gold preened under the attention, her eyes on the sun as it slipped towards the edge of the Bowl.
Thank you for the oiling, she said, rising as they put away the buckets, and walking towards the ledge. She liked to catch the final rays of sunlight most evenings, so at first Helyna didn’t think anything of it till Iliyith continued, I’ll shine so brightly in this light. We’ll dazzle them all. Then she was gone, gliding down towards the herdbeast pens.
Helyna swore, dropping the bucket of rags and stretching out her senses after the gold. “The vain creature, insisting on an extra oiling, I should have known…” she turned back to her confused friend who was picking up the rags. “Just leave them. Can you run to the crèche and tell them Vondlyn will be spending the night?”
She pushed at his shoulder as he didn’t seem to understand the urgency “Iliyith is Flying. Vondal, it’s time to go. I can’t focus on you both,” she added through gritted teeth as Iliyith reluctantly blooded her first, careful to avoid making a mess of her gleaming hide.
