A flush rose on her cheeks at the blunt compliment, despite herself. What in the world was that all about? But the way he was talking--and staring--he didn’t seem to recognize her. That couldn’t be right, could it?
She took the hand he’d stretched out, half surprised her fingers didn’t slip right through his flesh. “You’d left on circuit. The hold you were supposed to go to said you never arrived, but your horse was found wandering along the cliffs. Everyone assumed you drowned.”
A sudden flash of anger crossed her face and she shoved his shoulder roughly with her free hand. “I mourned you for a full Turn, named my son after you, and you’ve been alive this whole time?! Did you even tell your sisters and parents? Were they in on it?” Helyna pulled his hand closer, turning it over to show the bare knuckle. “Where’s your ring?” Her voice was tight and her eyes narrowed. “10 fucking Turns and you never thought to write to your wife? Or did you prefer to pretend I didn’t exist? Your best friend in the world.”
