Colors and textures swirled around him, the sounds of laughter mingling with the music as the harpers finished the piece. The gather-goers applauded the group and started to disperse, and Alekse made his way closer to the edge of the dance floor. He hoped to find Aederyn close by and he looked forward to surprising his little sister, but the gather would stretch for a bit and there was no rush. He wanted to hear all about the Weyr and how her life was changing now that she was a Candidate! He was glad to see her happy. Looking to the tops of the booths, he checked to see if his brown Handsome boy had found his clutchmate, and saw the firelizard perched solo atop a flagpole, ever the dignified thing. No, Aederyn and Rudi weren’t here yet, otherwise the two firelizards would undoubtedly be gallivanting about the grounds.
He drained the last of his wine before setting the glass on a table, enjoying the smoothness and slight bite the liquid offered, along with the bittersweet aftertaste. The wine, while not the best he’d tasted, was far from the worst. And who was he to turn down such a lovely beverage? He picked up a stray napkin to dust his hands, not wanting to muss his gather clothes too much, though not a lot would show up on the rich reddish brown tunic or dark trousers.
A gather was a truly rare occasion for him, and he intended to savor it. He thought briefly on how out of the loop he’d been lately, with spending so much time out on the traces or sketching maps it seemed like he’d missed most of the summer. Shaking his head, he resolved to not let that happen again. He took the experience philosophically, though. While the long days and warm summer evenings might be gone, autumn and winter would offer warm fireplaces and hot cups of klah or mulled wine, and long starry nights with which to enjoy the beverages.
The harpers struck up an upbeat but not raucous tune, and Alekse tapped his foot along to the beat. He was familiar with the song and the dance that went with it. He’d taught it to Aederyn several turns back, and took great joy in the intricate steps and tight spins. A hand at his elbow caused him to turn, and he found himself starting into the stunning blue eyes of a beautiful woman. He grinned, looking down at the slim figure in what could be considered a plain dress, but had been delicately embellished with tinkling beads and a sash that matched her sparkling jewelry, giving her a subtle beauty that only enhanced her attractiveness.
“It would be my absolute pleasure.” He bowed and offered his elbow, leading them to a place toward the center of the floor.
