D’hys’ day had been going fairly well until Zeianth got a message from Xyreith passing along an order from R’nya. Apparently little Madiquel was interested in dancing with him and it was in his best interest to agree. He wasn’t quite sure that it was. She was close to Rhaedalyn and R’nya and her father was Jajojin. Why would he want to fuck around with that kid on any level? Wasn’t she only like fourteen anyway? Maybe she was older, it was hard to tell with the way those three treated her—and how Madiquel herself seemed to view herself.
Then again, because of those three, it was in his best interest to be nice to Madiquel since it kept them all happy with him as well. A heartbroken teenager was a mess he had no interest in dealing with and he certainly didn’t want to deal with how her group of parents would react. So a dance. Fine, he could do that and maybe even give her a second one to show exactly how nice he was.
He had spotted her a few times throughout the day, spending time with one friend or another as D’hys made his way through his list of objectives for the Gather. By the time he spotted her with the same expression he’d seen on Rhaedalyn far too often, day-dreaming and lost in her own world, he was ready to get that task done with. As he approached, he saw the collision happen and Madiquel look around, worried and—was she close to crying? Fuck. With a sigh he hurried his way over to her.
When he was about ten feet away, D’hys realised that Madiquel was no longer fourteen as he took in her appearance. She was still a teen with a crush and he did his best to ignore those but this time he was purposely putting himself in the path and he sighed again as he grabbed a drudge that was darting around picking up discarded items. “Get that cleaned up. The lady was almost injured,” he ordered quietly before finally making his way to Madiquel.
“Careful, my lady,” D’hys started, pretending he didn’t recognize her as he took one of her hands in his while wrapping his free arm around her waist to guide her away from the glass. He purposely took a moment to look her over from toes to head as if looking for any cuts before feigning surprise at who she was. “Madiquel? You look stunning, like one of the princesses from Rhaedalyn’s stories.” He hated those stories and had suffered through many over the years. Now it felt like he was going to be living in one of them.
“Are you all right? I never understood why they used glass instead of wood or metal, especially when the light starts to fade.” He shook his head and glanced over to where the drudge was now hurriedly picking up the pieces before someone was hurt.
