No, no, no, no!
The gold had hatched, and instead of making some girl’s dream come true she was killing them. Again, Tala had to watch the girls around her die. She whimpered softly when one girl was thrown aside, like she was nothing, her blood spattering the sand. Tala wanted to run, but she knew running was a bad idea. She had to walk, but she had to move. She couldn’t die here, she had a daughter to raise, she wouldn’t die here.
When she managed to collect herself enough to start retreating, after what felt like years but was only seconds, Tala heard a scream from nearby, and she turned to see Vessaelia partially trapped underneath the poor thrown girl, who was clearly dead. That was enough to have Tala reroute and head to Vessaelia, needing to do something. She didn’t want to die, but she couldn’t be useless, and the rampaging gold had moved past them.
“Here, Vessaelia, it’s me, it’s Tala, we’re gonna get out of here, okay?” she said, gently pulling the dead girl off her friend, and hauling Vessaelia to her feet when she was clear, “C’mon, we gotta move, I’ve got you, we’re going to the side, alright, it’ll be safer there.” Tala didn’t know that for sure, but she had to believe it, that there was somewhere they could go to be safe. With an arm wrapped around Vessaelia, Tala maneuvered them both to the side, where a number of other Candidates were trying to get out of the way. Vessaelia didn’t seem to want to stay standing, and Tala rather felt her legs would give out too, so she let them both fall to the ground. She kept an eye on the Sands, on the gold, so that she could haul them both up if they had to move again. Thankfully, the gold went between and all of the adrenaline left Tala at once, leaving her shaking violently.
