Madiquel was giggling and enjoying herself as she chatted with Rheadalyn and R’nya between batches of eggs, sending updates and silly notes to A’tay whenever she got the chance, and genuinely having a great time. She’d forgotten how much fun a Hatching could be! Of course, if Madiquel had a cynical bone in her body, she would have realised it couldn’t possibly last.
She leaned forward excitedly when the gold egg finally released the not-so-little gold, and she watched with anticipation before the entire world crashed down around her. Madiquel gasped when the first girl was mauled, expecting the dragonet to find her mate after she got her irritation out… but it didn’t happen. Madiquel’s hands covered her mouth, eyes as wide as saucers, girl frozen with horror. Girls were being mauled, dying… and then the dragonet went for the boys and Madiquel gave a soft keen of terror, gaze darting to Quinvalis – she only saw him for a moment before he was lost within the group of anxious young men.
“Quin…” she gasped softly, and then she threw herself to her feet, leaning against the shoulders of the person in front of her. “QUIN!” She couldn’t see him, and her high-pitched voice was filled with terror as Clover circled around her head, shrieking in fear and confusion. Madiquel cringed when the dragonet spoke out, tears tumbling down her cheeks. She still couldn’t see Quinvalis, but the dragonet was gone now and the adults around her were trying to regain control. Syrendryth bellowing had Madiquel trembling on the spot. As she shifted her gaze to look towards T’ryn as he bellowed orders, she caught sight of Quinvalis.
Abandoning the Weyrleaders she was supposed to stay with at all times – as per her Papa’s request –, Madiquel threw herself through the crowds of people who were looking for loved ones or fleeing the awful Hatching and dashed across the hot sands towards where the Healers were gathered to take care of the lesser injured individuals. Just before a Healer got to him, Madiquel finally made it to Quinvalis, crying out his name again before she threw herself at him, bursting into heartbroken sobs as she clung to him. Partly relieved he was okay, and alive, and partly absolutely destroyed by the deaths around them, of humans and the little gold.
Clover nosed at Quinvalis’ cheek, lighting on his shoulder for a moment, before keening softly in despair and vanishing between to update A’tay as much as her little firelizard self could.
