It was finally time for the eggs to hatch and Rubren was ready. He’d rushed through bathing and getting dressed and was early to the Sands by a great deal. Better waiting there than dawdling and missing anything — unlikely, he imagined the Weyrlingmaster or the goldrider had a good idea when a Clutch would start hatching in earnest, but what if they overestimated? Rue didn’t want to risk it.
Which meant he spent a lot of time on the Sands being uncomfortably warm and waiting, because it was almost an hour after the Candidates were asked to be present that the first dragonet broke through the shell. A green, which was disappointing, but a bronze followed right after. Egg after egg hatched and none of the dragonets came anywhere near Rubren. Oh, except the green who mauled a kid, which was totally what he was hoping for.
He knew greens were most common, but there were just so sharding many of them in this Clutch. Rue didn’t want a green! Being a greenrider just didn’t sound as fun as the other colors, and he just… he wasn’t like that. Honestly, he’d rather not Impress at all than Impress green. Being Searched, the idea of not Impressing wasn’t quite as horrifying as it was for some of the weyrbrats. The possibility of Impressing a dragon had only been in Rue’s life for a few turns, not his entire life. He hadn’t been holding his breath waiting for his dragon since he could walk.
Which did not mean he didn’t want a dragon, because he did, very badly! Rue just wanted one that wasn’t green. Bronze would be best, of course, but a brown would be good as well, or even blue. Just not green. Girls were great and all, but he didn’t want to be mentally bound to one. Thanks, but no thanks. They hadn’t seen a single brown hide on a dragonet, and there were what, ten greens? More? It was a bit hard to keep track. Ruben couldn’t decide if he should get closer to the eggs or move farther back. Which would improve his chances of catching the attention of a hatchling? Unsure, Rue ended up staying exactly where he was, silently mouthing ‘come on, come on,’ as they waited for the next egg to hatch.
