Dessa smiled at Onari’s hesitant question, the way the words were chopped into little sections with telling pauses. Hesitation, she decided, rather than a lack of knowing what she was asking. Onari hadn’t yet struck her as the type of woman who would speak without thinking through what it was she was going to be saying. The child seemed a little more inspired by the moment, but such was the way of children and Dessa found it completely charming. You simply never knew what was going to come out of a child’s mouth, and while sometimes it was definitely rude, it was almost always hilarious in some form or another.
“I fail to see why not,” Dessa said, though her tone was thoughtful. She smiled at Onari, rather charmed by her enthusiastic displayed as she asked her question. Was Telgar Weyr a place they could truly start over, regardless of whatever had caused them to flee their previous life? As she’d said, Dessa didn’t see why not; it was exactly what she had done and while she hadn’t fled her husband because of the abuse Onari had implied, she’d certainly fled him. Perhaps she’d share that much with the young woman… “I did,” she said gently, glancing at Onari briefly before settling her gaze back on the road. Her personal walls shooting back up after revealing just that much.
Dessa wasn’t prone to sharing her personal life with others, and certainly had not been in a position since she was quite young to actually have someone she felt comfortable confiding in; Dessa couldn’t remember the last time she’d had someone she would call a close friend. Eyebrows furrowed, she focused on the road, though her attention was focused on Onari, listening intently for what she might say or do.
