Nlani glanced between the two older women with a frown, her gaze finally settling on Onari, beseeching.
The look Onari gave back said only one thing -- it's up to you.
Maybe the child would've preferred to keep watch next to her mother, but in the end she seemed to figure the best course of action was to keep watch on the front lines, keep the other woman entertained. It broke Onari's heart that the girl could even calculate in such a way, but she understood implicitly. After all, her development had resulted in much the same aftermath. Nlani couldn't be any more than where her path led her.
Onari shifted toward the front herself as well, settling herself at the right side of the cart, back against the wall, hand reaching to grab the child's splayed fingers as she took her place next to Dessa.
Nlani glanced down, albeit briefly, to smile as she squeezed Onari's fingers.
Then, her attention turned abruptly to Dessa. "Mama didn't tell you her name when you asked," the child offered, voice saccharine. "She's Onari, and I'm Nlani."
Onari's eyes closed. Fuck. She should have prepped them with false ones.
Well, too late now.
