This was already bad. This woman, altruistic or not, had already seen too much. She'd gathered enough details to give a useful account to any guard that found himself wanting to question her. Onari just wanted to leave -- two days out from the village wasn't far enough, clearly. As soon as they slipped away from this woman, she'd need to regroup. Maybe they couldn't go to Telgar. Maybe they had to travel to a further Weyr.
Onari's eyes flickered toward the woman, hesitant. "I can't pay you," she told her, wincing as she tried to stand up straight again. "I don't want to put you out."
"Mom!"
Eyes that would have otherwise snapped in haste to the child lumbered rather sluggishly to her. The warning she held in them must have been just slovenly, as the child didn't seem any more deterred. If anything, she appeared more determined.
Onari's eyes closed. This was such a bad idea.
There was another second of deep consideration before Onari looked at the woman again, this time carefully shifting toward her. "If you're sure. I'll need help with the bandages."
