A’tay stood a couple of feet away from Xyxyth who was happily stuffing his face from the bucket full of meat. A Healer was currently re-bandaging his hand and telling him that it needed stitches but he supposed a couple more hours wouldn’t hurt so long as he didn’t strain the hand or get it dirty. That sounded a lot easier than done considering he had to bathe and oil Xyxyth before getting him home to nap.
The Healer left him to check on the other Candidate that had met an excited dragonet earlier just as Madiquel came running in. A’tay was sure he was still a bit in shock from the bite and was seeing things until his friend threw her arms around him and started crying. He understood. It was relief, happiness, fear, sadness, all rolled into one and as he returned the hug, he found the emotions starting to flood back to him stronger than they had while standing there watching everything happen.
When she sank to the floor, he followed suit and took one of her hands in his good one. He was thankful that he was left-handed and the dragonet had a taste for right hands, though with the tasks ahead of him for the next several weeks, he really wished he had both hands in perfect working order. He stared at their hands, not sure what to say and knowing what he wished he could say he couldn’t anymore. Not freshly Impressed. Xyxyth seemed kind of chill but he didn’t want to upset him with showing too much affection for the girl he liked.
As it was, A’tay felt a stir of discomfort and curiosity coming from Xyxyth as the bronze finished his mouthful and looked their way. A’tay countered it with his own panic, doing his best to hide his feelings for Madiquel, mostly so the dragonet didn’t spill the beans and say anything he shouldn’t. “Um… this is Madiquel, my best friend. And this is Xyxyth, my uh dragon.” It was kind of obvious but he felt like he had to say something else about the little guy like he did with Madiquel.
Hello, nice to meet you, Xyxyth dipped his head in greeting and studied Madiquel. What made her a best friend? How was that different from a not-best friend? He could tell she was important to A’tay but he currently couldn’t figure out why. Unless he liked girls that cried. Maybe tears tasted good? He sat down and leaned in a bit closer so he could flick his tongue out at her cheek. He instantly leaned back and stuck his tongue back out in what A’tay could only imagine was meant to show disgust. Tears taste funny.
A’tay chuckled even as he hoped Madiquel wasn’t about to die from fright at a dragonet in her face after everything that had happened but she hadn’t run away screaming so that was good. Although, that may have been due to him holding her hand. “You don’t lick tears, Xyxyth. You wipe them away when you see a pretty girl crying,” he didn’t notice the compliment he had freely given his crush even as he boldly – an oddity for him – wiped his thumb across the cheek that had been licked to remove dragon spit and tears.
I suppose I will leave that to you since I lack the proper thumbs, Xyxyth held out a paw as if the comparison was truly needed. I still have itchy spots. Do your thumbs work on them as well? And you didn’t tell her your name.
A’tay scrunched up his nose at the reminder that it was time to bathe and oil the bronze hide he was still marvelling over bonding to. “She knows my… oh. It’s A’tay… do you like it? And um, do you want to help clean him? It might take me a while with one hand.” He winced, not wanting to remind Madiquel of his injury, though it was hard not to notice the linen wrapped around it.
