The humming resonating through the Weyr was a sound all of the Candidates had been instructed about, so most knew what to do right when the sound started. Erisi was one of them, but instead of taking action to get ready and onto the Hatching Grounds, he was leaning against the door to his room with arms folded against his chest. The expression on his face clearly said that he did not want to budge. Some Candidates were excited, some were nervous, and Erisi was entirely filled by dread. This wasn't the life he had picked for himself, and he definitely did not want some dragonet changing the course of his existence. Erisi put a high value in control, and having the idea of that control being wrested from him by a dragon wasn't pleasing.
He'd been kidna-- sorry -- Searched, forced to live in this Weyr and contribute, had gotten into trouble numerous times, and they expected him to be happy and want to Impress. Erisi was not the type of person to just submit to another's will. In the end, it probably wasn't that surprising that he was resisting until the very bitter end. Another group of Candidates passed by him, and he kept his gaze strictly on the ground. Erisi doubted he would go unnoticed for long, but he was going to revel in these last moments of freedom. He was sure a dragonet wouldn't be stupid enough to pick him, but on the off chance that one did, well, he'd like to remember his life when it wasn't shackled to a dragonet's tail.
His time was almost up, and he sucked in a long, calming breath. Who knew how long this Hatching would take, and if he'd last through it intact. He just wanted his old life, he wanted that old happiness. Sure, he had a new kind of happiness here in small doses, but it was nothing when compared to what he once had. Any moment now he really would have to get ready to enter the Hatching Grounds, but he was still continuing to hold off.
Someone he recognized began to close in next to him, and Erisi finally broke his stern silence. He pushed some of the dark strands of hair away from his face, and greeted Valerian with a weary smile. He was still dressed in pants and a short sleeved shirt, which made it fairly clear what he was trying to pull. "Do you imagine if I don't show up, D'ren will send someone to forcibly drag me to the Sands?"
