R’nya released Quilriana gently as she moved out of his arms, watching with a slight frown as she tried to answer his question. Resisting the urge to move and follow after her, R’nya moved quietly further into the room, closing the door gently and toeing his boots off, wriggling his toes in relief. His boots were quite comfortable (custom made since the return North) but he still appreciated the freedom of removing the confines. He rolled his socks up and stuffed them into the appropriate boot. When he looked up, Quilriana was staring at him.
Curiosity lit R’nya’s pale eyes as his companion marched back over to him and kissed him, the bronzerider responding to the kiss though his curiosity didn’t abate as she led him over to a seat, setting him in it and herself upon his lap. R’nya wrapped his arms gently around her, and considered the questions she, had put to him. He had some idea of where she was going, but wasn’t quite sure how he felt about it. He did not believe a Weyr was a place for a lady, and certainly not a little girl who had so much promise to be a wonderful a woman as her mother. The boy, of course, was less of a worry though R’nya wasn’t naive to the dangers men faced within a Weyr.
“Under twelve, kids are mostly in classes for basic education,” R’nya spoke lowly, leaning back into the chair and tilting his head to watch Quilriana’s face. “After twelve, they are allowed to attend Candidacy classes.” He paused for a moment, thinking about what he knew of the children and what they were up to. “I never had much to do with the children or their day to day activities. From my understanding they attend classes, have chores, and the rest of the time are left to their own devices. The goldriders and some bronzeriders often get them to assist with bathing their dragons. Those that Impress obviously move through weyrlinghood and then are assigned to a Wing after graduation.”
R’nya brushed a hand through his hair, frowning slightly, eyebrows knitted together. “Weyrlife might offer the kids a better chance at a base education, and a chance at Impression, but I do not know that it would offer an improvement in the long term, Quilriana.” R’nya’s nose scrunched up. “Especially not at Katila. Though I will not be there for much longer. My wing and I will be moving to Fort Wery along with Rhaedalyn and her gold.” Though he hadn’t yet gotten the chance to tell Rhaedalyn that yet. The older bronzeriders had only decided on how to split themselves up recently, and the bickering over who would get what goldrider had horrified R’nya. The women were more than items and should have been included in the discussion though, for their sake, he was glad they hadn’t been privy to such course treatment.
Hopefully Rhaedalyn wouldn’t be too upset with the decision that had been made for her. If nothing else, R’nya knew Aradissicath would be happy to be free of the other gold dragons, and R’nya was quite sure the decision had been made as much because Xyreith had threatened many of the other bronze dragons who had no doubt passed on the threats to their riders.
“All the Weyrs will be re-opened in the coming months, though the gold dragons will be spread thin until they hatch more of their own.” And wasn’t that going to cause a whole lot of trouble. It would seem that the highest bidder would be getting the gold eggs, and R’nya wasn’t quite sure he had what it took to be the Weyrleader that was going to be required.
