He shouldn’t have said anything! He knew he shouldn’t! Yet he had opened his mouth and said something. The sulking expression that seemed horrified and upset tore at R’nd and made for a dull ache in his chest that had his hand resting over his heart, trying to stop it. He had messed up and there was no way to undo it or correct it. Words had landed him in trouble so there wasn’t any way he could use words to get himself out of it. Likely, he’d only make it worse. “I told Amorandii this was a bad idea,” he mumbled as his gaze lowered to his hand that slipped from his chest to rest between them. Perhaps only an apology before dressing and leaving was the right course of action? It’s not and you know that. Think about all of the words you said and you may find the cause of distress.
R’nd frowned as he went back over what he said, or what he thought he had said. Was it the teasing he had done over only saying he spoke with a young lady instead of saying it was B’jin’s chatty daughter? Maybe it was simply pointing out he had been a horrible friend by missing birthdays before this one, reminding B’jin of his mistakes? No, it was the way he worded that line. B’jin was older than him, they both knew that, the entire Weyr knew that though the bluerider hadn’t ever sat down to figure out the math to give him B’jin’s age or the gap between them. R’nd had accidentally pointed that out though and made it sound like he missed every single birthday in his lover’s life because of the age difference. He was such a fool!
A forgiven fool, though? R’nd blinked in surprise as the kiss was given with soft words of thanks. R’nd couldn’t hold back the smile that emerged from the gesture. He was completely relieved that he wasn’t in trouble or about to be shut out of B’jin’s life again for his stupidity. “I wanted to celebrate more birthdays with you but I didn’t think you would want that,” R’nd tried to explain without scaring B’jin by confessing the crush he had on the man for so long. It didn’t click in that his crush was akin to B’jin’s confession of loving him and that it would be a welcomed thing to say.Stop talking and just kiss him. You know you aren’t the smartest kid in the class after a flight. Your flighty brain is far too addled for more than small talk and kisses. R’nd shooed Ayyonth away but took his advice all the same as he leaned in to apologise with a proper kiss.
Entertaining but sometimes tiring as well, my beautiful companion. Ayyonth was ready to hit his head on a wall if R’nd tried to explain himself again but was glad that his human decided to follow the perfect advice of kissing. He often encouraged R’nd to share what he was feeling but after a flight he was a bit of a mental mess. Then again, it was likely the best time to get him to say the right things with enough prodding, Ayyonth decided as he picked through old memories of waking up beside B’jin after flights. He still enjoyed seeing R’nd’s reactions to the first win. Such an adorable and confused boy he had been! With these two as our examples for how wonderful our work is, we’d never lack in willing participants! He teased them but he really did love their oblivious humans.
