739.03.24 | Wedding Marching Orders - Jalazmar - 24.Mar.18

Jalazmar frowned at the letter that was still in his hand. He had read it twice already and it still wasn't sinking in. Perhaps a third glance would help?

Jalazmar,

We have had enough of your stalling and fooling around out at Telgar. We have already lost two wedding arrangements and we will not let this go on any further.

You are to be wed at the end of the fourth month in Fort Hold. No exceptions, no delays.

My cousin J'ver has already been informed of this and will be bringing us to Fort Hold to bear witness to the union.

Get yourself there however you please but get there in time for the wedding or consider yourself disowned with no more ties to High Reaches and marked as an exile.

Signed,

Lord of High Reaches

Nope, still as much of a blur as the first time.

It wasn't like he caused the first arranged marriage to fail. The woman died. The second one was kind of his fault. She was the replacement for the one that died but he kind of sort of lost contact with her back in Nabol until everyone took the hint and called it off. He likely left the impression that he found someone in Telgar, but that wasn't the case either. He hadn't really even thought about marriage over the last several years but it looked like his father was going to fix that.

And what was with signing the note as the Lord and not his father? Jalazmar sighed and realised he likely angered the man more than he ever had. He was the youngest of four boys and was easily over looked growing up since he wasn't being groomed for taking over. He was also, in his opinion, the happiest of the boys and the one not causing too much trouble. He would have figured he was at least his mother's favourite but clearly lazing around in Telgar at his brother's home had pushed them enough.

So he was to be wed to a woman he didn't even have the name of. That was likely intentional so he wouldn't look into her and try to come up with another reason to avoid marriage. It wasn't that he was against the idea of marriage, it was more being used for political reasons. He suspected this new wife of his was to make some sort of alliance between High Reaches and Fort to have an ally in times of strife. He had no desire to get involved in politics and it was part of the reason why he left High Reaches to begin with. That and he was convinced his two eldest brothers would soon start killing off the competition for the title, including offing their dad. Jalazmar was actually surprised their dad had survived their scheming this long.

Even though he doubted Gabrin would care if he was harbouring an exile of High Reaches, Jalazmar didn't want to put his brother into an awkward position between blood ties and marriage ties as the Lord of Telgar could be a rather disagreeable man when he wanted to be. Time to start making arrangements for settling everything up here and getting to Fort. He had some friends among the dragonriders so he was sure he'd get a quick ride where he needed to be without owing more than a favour.

It was a shame, though. He had really liked Telgar Hold and had accidentally settled in nicely there. Now it was time to pack up and start over again with a woman he hoped he got along with. He saw the way his brother was with his wife and kids and Jalazmar hoped he was never liked that. Gabrin was pretty harmless despite all of his playing around but Jalazmar wanted to at least like the woman he was to spend his life with, perhaps even love her, and enjoy spending time with her.

As he packed the letter away in his desk, Jalazmar decided to add getting some new clothes commissioned to his list of things to do. He'd need to look presentable for his in-laws, though he didn't know their rank, though he doubted he was being marrying off to a farmer's daughter no matter how much he had annoyed his parents.

He decided to get the clothing out of the way first and then perhaps head down to the tavern for a drink as he thought about how to break the news to everyone. Quilriana would likely be working and she'd help him see the silver lining in the arrangement and how best to proceed with severing ties and beginning the journey of forging new ones.
