738.12.22 | Out on a Limb - T'ryn - 26.Dec.17

Given R’nd was his father, T’ryn had developed an interest in family trees. He knew who some of his half siblings were from his mom’s gossiping with other women or the simple and very clear fact that they looked like the oblivious bluerider and he knew he had an aunt and uncle on R’nd’s side but he had wanted to know more about that family. He spent time with his aunt Eridella and even his grandmother though his uncle Pendalier kind of intimidated him and T’ryn was fairly certain the man wasn’t fond of dragonriders so he didn’t visit all that much. To be fair though, R’nd didn’t seem to visit his older brother all that much either.

He now had a very large spread of his family branching down from great-grandparents down to his generation. It was impressive but it also left T’ryn longing for the relatives he’d never get to meet, like R’nd’s dad who had died not long before R’nd returned home after they went North again. He had no idea what R’nd felt over that and if he carried any guilt about not getting to his father before his passing and for some reason, didn’t feel like it was his place to ask. They had a decent enough relationship now that they both had some years of experience in being a dad and son but that may have been why he didn’t ask. He had learned a lot about R’nd and how the man liked to see everyone else happy, not burdened with his own sorrow when he could handle that alone.

Now that his tree was finished, T’ryn wanted to work on another one as he still had the itch for creating one. He was already working on one for N’mor but wanted something a bit more challenging. That’s when he decided M’ris and Ameris might want one that joined their families. They seemed mated and happy in his opinion but if they ever did drift, T’ryn would make sure the diagram was easy enough to cut right now the middle so they could each have their half.

He had a good start to the tree, knowing all of their kids from relationships from Katila onward, but he didn’t know anything about their parents or if they had siblings. That meant going to a Harper that would be willing to help him. He had slim pickings but V’ler seemed to like R’nd and B’jin enough to tolerate their kids so he had spent the day pestering the bluerider as V’ler even made a trip to Harper Hall – somewhere he was still allowed since he was a poor Stolen Journeyman and not just an evil dragonrider taking whatever they wanted – to see if they had any old Weyr records.

T’ryn took the notes V’ler had made for him, knowing he likely owed the man for it, and returned home to work on his project. It seemed grandparents weren’t complete on both sides so T’ryn decided to start with their parents which he had all the information on. Ameris’ side was admittedly rather easy and T’ryn grinned at his work when it was all filled in. M’ris’, however, was a bit trickier. He had only vaguely heard about the goldrider mate M’ris had before the plague and how it sent him spiralling into despair and ugly drinking for a long time. It seemed they also had two girls together but T’ryn was fairly confident that they were never in Katila and he hadn’t heard any rumours about them since coming North either. Knowing what little he did know, he opted to avoid those three names all together and avoided pissing off his Weyrleader and being the cause of another messy meltdown.

Once all of his known kids were added, T’ryn added the last name, Eris, which joined the two sides. He was proud of his work which included a basic drawing of a tree with multiple limbs and a few leaves on each. Now all he needed was to get his half-brother, Ayontay, to cobble together a frame for it. He had wanted to frame his own but worried R’nd would see it and all the names he didn’t know might send him into a state of shock.

Two days later and he had some free time again, deciding it was time to share his gift. Midday meal was just wrapping up and T’ryn saw the couple leave together as they often did. No doubt M’ris would stick with routine and walk Ameris to her office before going to his own. Assuming they didn’t have any other major plans, T’ryn ran back to his weyr to get the gift and made a beeline for Ameris’ office, and knocked but didn’t call out his presence due to being a bit out of breath.

RE: 738.12.22 | Out on a Limb - M'ris - 04.Jan.18

M’ris had a love-hate relationship with his job. He enjoyed making sure things ran smoothly and were up to what he felt were appropriate and still achievable standards. He hated, however, having to actually be in charge of seemingly everything. Having everyone look to him for solutions and as a role model was tiring and he took every opportunity he could to relax or just simply sneak away when he really needed to. Today was actually one of the better days where people seemed to know what their jobs were and didn’t need to run to him every ten minutes looking for direction or an idea to solve a minor issue. He was proud of his people and took a little longer enjoying a break with Ameris since he knew she needed the breaks as much as he did.

After pushing their lunch date as long as they possibly could before the crazy mentors started harping at them to get back to work, M’ris walked Ameris back to her office in a leisurely stroll, once more taking their time and enjoying the cooler air of the season. He didn’t procrastinate nearly as long as he would have liked in her office, though, thanks to a knock at the door not long after they arrived. With a sigh, M’ris said he’d answer it for her on his way out.

An amused and slightly confused look fell into place when he saw T’ryn panting at the door after what must have been a long run. He wasn’t too concerned given the fact the young man was carrying something and wasn’t trying to shout out a concern or emergency situation that happened in the minutes they were out of sight so he simply waved the boy in and turned back to Ameris, now grinning.

“I thought I was the only out of breath and flushed bronzerider that you saw.” M’ris laughed as he saw T’ryn’s eyes go wide at the implication and his cheeks burn bright red. He clapped the young man on the back and walked him further into the room.
