734.09.01 | Disasters and Opportunities - S'kef - 04.Jan.14

S'kef felt like an old man. At this rate, it seemed he would soon look like one as well. He stood dourly on the edge of the new hatching circuit, his firm features chiseled into an unpleasant scowl. He looked with resentment upon Aradissicath's problematic brood. It was an unwanted exclamation point, punctuating what had to be the worst month in the turns since the plague.

The landslide had destroyed so much of what they had all struggled to create. Their toil was swept away like twigs down a rushing river, battered and ultimately drowned. It was a harsh reminder of how much the south hated them. Their home was taken from them yet again, and S'kef found himself in the detestable position of picking up the pieces.

He supposed he'd asked for it. He'd wanted this position so badly, to the point that he and J'ver compromised their morals and risked their lives to obtain it. The position had been good to both of them, but S'kef felt the weight of responsibility that came alongside it. He would not neglect that duty. Katila, even in shambles, was his. He was its master and its protector. He owed it every ounce of his strength, for it was the source of his own power. Now, however, he looked upon it and saw only sickness and misery.

How pathetic, that in the wake of Tsuen's death he had to uphold her ban on traveling north. The plans were in place, yes, but the fresh clutch on the sands put an inconvenient time constraint on the move. What was to be done? He welcomed the chance to move forward, but he knew it could not be taken lightly. It was a big change, a big operation, and a big risk.

We can't just sit here and lick our wounds in the mud. That's what got us stuck here last time.

Nearby, Tyrrisath shifted in the morning shadows and sighed. It is a large clutch he sneered. He didn't need to voice the concern behind his comment. There were plenty of eggs, and more to come in the near future. There were not many candidates, though. The dragon angled his head at S'kef and sighed a second time. Will you take more?

S'kef's scowl deepened. No he replied. He would not resort to stealing. Ethics mattered less to him than precedent, though. First scratching to rebuild, then stealing? The cycle would begin anew, and they would remain in the jungle for another fifteen turns. Not if he had anything to do with it, though. His dragonriders deserved more. They deserved to rule.

The idea came to him simply and quickly enough, but he had to pause and chew on it for a moment before he considered that it was legitimate. Could it be so simple?

He smiled. Tyrrisath? Call up the search riders. Call them all. I thinkĀ  I need to canvas them for ideas and see if I can secure a few volunteers for a special project

Tyrrisath turned his head in the direction of the Weyr proper. What project?

S'kef folded his arms and allowed his scowl to melt into a self-satisfied smile. We're going to go searching he said.

Tyrrisath was mildly surprised. It seemed like an overly simple solution. S'kef liked the simplicity, though. Don't question me, Tyrrisath he said smoothly, with a hint of the arrogant self-assurance that had always fueled his more risky endeavors. I think it's rather elegant. We send our riders on a legitimate search...They go to only the most distant, outlying cotholds. Those people will have never seen dragons...even those who are old enough would have been lucky to glimpse one at a distance. They will be frightened. They will also be awed. They won't deny us

He paused to review the idea a second time, finding that he only liked it more. They will be too far from the major holds for rumors to reach more seasoned ears too quickly he said. By the time those rumors reach the major holds, we will be more than ready to make our grand appearance. It will be a good opportunity to scout the north and see what's changed, and those slow-flowing rumors could really work to our advantage, don't you think?

Tyrrisath rumbled his approval. S'kef knew without asking that the call had already gone out.

He grinned and crackled his knuckles. Take me home. I want to check on Jai before meeting with them. Perhaps a quick bite to eat as well...

Amazing, how quickly the right set of events could improve one's mood.

Plot ahoy!

-It will be assumed that ALL search riders and search-sensitive or likely search-sensitive dragons will be present at this off-camera meeting. However, the only PCs who will be chosen to participate in the search are the ones who purchase a ticket. If you want your rider to be among them, please visit the goodies thread! All other members of the search party will be NPCs.
-A bronze and a brownrider may also be sent as guardians and/or to make sure orders are followed and nothing goes wrong. Please remember that on SPW, neither browns nor bronzes can actually search!
- The searched candidates for this clutch will not be PCs, but will become available for adoption six months after the hatching, just like normal.
-The areas being searched will be outlying regions, so Telgar hold will not receive rumors of dragons for some time! Please do not mention these searches or dragon sightings in Telgar Hold RP until we make an announcement.
- Common people have not seen dragons in almost twenty turns now, and even those who are old enough to have ever seen one will likely either not remember or will have seen them from a great distance. Dragons were always rare sights in such remote regions, so these people will be more frightened by their appearance than welcoming them as heroes.

Thank you very much.
