Where are you going to send your charries? North to dust out an old Weyr or stay in the South to clean up the mess and rebuild?

Yes, if you have a character you no longer wish to play and don't want to become adoptable or an NPC, then you can have your character die in the landslide.
Everyone will be staying for a while after the slide to help rebuild a bit and take care of those that are seriously injured before moving North.
Some of my characters will end up staying for their own reasons and certain lengths of time but most will be going North since that is where the action will be.

So... We have to go north at some point? Because I was working under the assumption that it was optional and we didn't have to if we didn't want to. And now I'm confused...

No one has to go anywhere.
Everyone will be remaining in the south to rebuild while those that were injured in the slide heal. When the majority is declared fit for travel, they will pack up and move north. No one who doesn't want to go will be made, and any Stolen folks will be given the option to return home (though the details to that ICly will need to be figured out)
Those most eager to Impress will most likely be taken North, as that is where (eventually) all the gold will be located.
At this stage, Katila will house those who don't want to return North, and those in charge of making sure whomever stay south, behave themselves.
Exact details and a timeline of events are being created so everyone can see what will happen on each IC day. Due to all the RL commitments at this time of the year and the fast IC pace of events, we expect a lot of this event will be back posted so well need to keep everyone on the same page.

B'jin is super excited to go home.
R'nya will follow his girls. So he'll spend a lot of time at Katila first until the north is safe for the golds
Z'ia is a trouble maker; you can bet he'll be in the thick of things for as long as he can a mange it.
T'bia just wants to make R'nd proud of him, so he'll trot along after him lol
Indivara will go north, and meet snow, and demand a Weyrling on transport duty bring her home to the south again. She'll spend enough time in the North to impress, sulk the whole time she's stuck at frozen Telgar, then live permanently at Katila.
