Bordtai found himself scuffing his feet against the gravel of the path as he watched the pebbles bounce forward ahead of him off the tip of his ill-fitted boots.  They were scuffed and dirty, clearly another pair of hand-me-downs that matched the patched material of the rest of his clothes.  Not that it really mattered as long as he was fed and clothed and not under the feet of the adults.  His birthday had come and gone like any other day of the turn, unannounced and uneventful.  Though, if truth be told, Bordtai didn’t mind.  He’d managed to sneak away for a walk along the cliff’s near the Weyr and while he’d come back with a bloody knee, it’d been a quiet walk.  And quiet was still something he highly valued.

Today, however, he was not turning his feet in the direction of the cliffs for another quiet walk now that his chores were done.  Instead, he turned them toward the open Square.  There was a slight tinge of a headache that pounded lightly in his head and Bordtai knew he’d regret later that night deciding to walk toward such a crowded place instead of away from it, but there had been something nagging at the back of his mind he wanted to talk to someone about and the only adult he could really think to confront with such a dilemma was the Green Rider, B’jin.

After all, the man not only had a dragon, but last Bordtai had heard, he’d been teaching the candidates how to care for the firelizards that were the current problem on Bordtai’s mind.  Born at the Weyr after they had fled the plague and set up in the South, Bordtai had grown up knowing that the firelizards were the reason the plague had even been spread to the Dragon’s in the first place.  Why anyone would risk the health of the Weyr by bringing the firelizards back now… he didn’t understand.  And to be honest, he’d avoided the little creatures thus far.  He didn’t dare risk the health of the Weyr for a pet he’d not even be able to guarantee would stick around.

Finding the green rider with his Weyrling class, Bordtai took a seat not far away and waited paitently for the lessons to be over and class dismissed before he finally dusted off the back of his breeches and approached the man.

“Hullo.”  He said softly from behind the man, hoping that the adult wouldn’t find him a bother.  Then again, this was the same man who’d personally dragged him to the Healer Hall some time ago and didn’t seem bothered by wasting such time with children.

There is a child watching, Larrikith noted, her mind open to the approach of the young man as he settled on the outskirts due to her need to be sure that each of the weyrlings spread across the grassy area could easily bespeak her if needed, of she could pick up on the errors they were making that B’jin couldn’t, and they might not be aware they were making. Some of the weyrlings, Larrikith took far too much pleasure in correcting, but that was a quirk B’jin worked around.

Brown eyes darted in the direction his dragon mentally indicated, curious as to what child it could be. Amorandii had already proven she was far too excitable around the dragonets and been told she wasn’t allowed to insert herself into a class unless specifically brought along by B’jin or R’nd. Indamor was far more reserved, and inclined to watch from the sidelines as this other youngster was, but Larrikith would have referred to Indamor by name. Recognising the child swiftly, B’jin flashed a warm smile at the boy before turning back to his class; dismissal came not too long after.

B’jin startled slightly when Bordtai spoke, turning around with a smile lighting up as he looked down at the child. “Hello, Bordtai,” B’jin said lightly, shoving the last item into a calico bag and throwing it at Larrikith; the green dragon caught it and winked between, taking the items the quick way back to the Weyrling barracks. B’jin, for his part, crossed his ankles and dropped elegantly to the ground, patting the grass in an invitation to Bordtai. “What’s up?”

The greenrider was delighted and flattered that the youngster had chosen to seek him out. He hadn’t really seen much of the child since he’d dragged him – just about kicking and screaming in his own unique way – to the Healer Hall. He’d been under the (most likely) correct assumption the youngster was avoiding him. It was charming to see he’d finally come out to say hello again!

Bordtai watched with some slight amusement as the Rider tossed a colorful bag at the little green who caught it and disappeared in an easy enough fashion to tell that they had done such a handoff often enough.  On one hand Bordtai thought it a handy trick, but on the other it almost disappointed him to see a dragon (even one as little as the green) to be used as an errand beast.  But then again, until Thread returned, what else were they to do?  That brought a whole new slew of questions to mind about Thread and the North and what the Dragon’s should or should not be doing, but he pushed them aside – it wasn’t why he’d sought out the adult today.

Watching the man take a seat in the grass and pat the ground in invitation, Bordtai shrugged his shoulders and followed B’jin’s example, crossing his own ankles and dropping a little more roughly to the ground nearby.  It was easy to tell by the way the man’s face had seemed to nearly light up in the invitation that he wasn’t bothered by Bordtai coming to him and that gave the young boy some encouragement that he’d at least chose the right adult to pester with questions.  His other choice would have been the healer-man, but Talian had a new dragon.

“I guess I am confused.”  Bordtai began as he looked around at the people who were passing by in the Square, either from leaving the dismissed class or in common traffic that the area saw daily.  “About the firelizards… I thought they had brought the plague to the dragons.  Isn’t it dangerous to keep them around the Weyr?  What will happen if they bring the plague back?”  Turning back to B’jin, the boy didn’t know that the concern in his voice had also seeped into his eyes.  After all, if the plague came back… how much lower would that make his chances to make a better life for himself by impressing a dragon?

Like any boy on Pern, Bordtai would enjoy the idea of riding a dragon, but if the plague came back, would there be a dragon left for the small boy?

B’jin watched the youngster settle himself down, the greenrider relaxed and at ease; he hadn’t always been inclined toward teaching, but his time as a Journeyman had developed both his ability and his desire to teach others, and the time he’d spent with the youth of Katila, particularly when he was shacked up with Par’a, had only furthered his desire to teach the youngsters of the Weyr the basics of reading, writing and numbers though the latter were far from B’jin’s strong point.

The greenrider’s curiosity was peaked when Bordtai began speaking, head tilting slightly as Larrikith popped back from between and landed, trotting over and curling up behind B’jin in as non-threatening manner she could, not wanting to frighten off the youngster (some of them were so easily spooked!) and curled around to rest the end of her nose in B’jin’s lap, the man petting her lightly and without much thought. “Ahh,” B’jin murmured, nodding slightly as one of Larrikith’s eyes flickered open to peer at Bordtai with a slowly swirling rainbow of blues and greens.

“Weyrleader D’ren,” S’kef be fucked, D’ren was the Weyrleader, and B’jin didn’t care who heard him refer to the bronzerider as such. S’kef was full of himself, and had terrorised the rest of the weyr into trotting along in his shadow. B’jin didn’t care; D’ren was his Weyrleader and that was that! “Said that the firelizards were no threat,” though the statement was said with a frown, it was obvious that B’jin was inclined to believe the other man, though just as obvious he was not happy about the stance he had taken on it.

“Talian, also, has assured me that the little bastards won’t cause any harm.” B’jin had never been fond of the firelizards, and had been less than pleased to see them return, plague or no plague! The bloody things were a nuisance and the whole planet had been better off without them. He didn’t even know why the still had the bloody things. They had the dragons! What did they need the midget wannabe’s for?

I bet they taste delicious, Larrikith input slyly, her voice reaching out gently to Bordtai. We could serve them as a delicacy. B’jin gave a snort of amusement, and rubbed the dragon’s eyeridge affectionately.

“I hardly think that would go down well, love.”

Firelizard eggs on toast. Doesn’t that sound delicious?

Bordtai knew it was wrong when the greenrider referred to D’ren as the Weyrleader when S’kef had assumed the position, but the young boy couldn’t help but be terribly confused by that whole situation as well.  As far as he understood, to be Weyrleader your dragon had to win the senior queen.  Sure Nirinath had not flown for some time… but that just meant the Weyrleadership shouldn’t have changed either as far as he understood.

The boy heard the man’s words about both the older Weyrleader as well as the Healer, but he didn’t miss that B’jin said the words with a frown.  Did that frown mean that B’jin was not yet convinced?  And if the greenrider wasn’t convinced, should he be convinced himself?  That frown on the greenrider’s face only reassured Bordtai that he had made the right decision to avoid the little creatures so far.  The last thing the young boy wanted was to ruin his chance at having a future that consisted of more than just dodging bullies.

While Bordtai was not surprised about some folks in the Weyr still being untrustful of the little lizards, the boy found himself caught off guard when the green spoke up with the idea of eating them.  He had to blink at her and her rider for a moment before a grin spread across his face.  “Well everyone who has one might not like it, but it would stop them from bringing the plague back wouldn’t it?”

Grinning at the green, he added, “If I ever find an egg, I’ll bring it to you and we’ll have eggs and toast together.  I don’t want my dragon to ever get sick.”

B’jin grinned as he watched the smile transform the young boy’s face, brown eyes sparkling as the child spoke to his dragon, and B’jin rubbed her face gently as Larrikith trilled out a happy laughing sound and blew a breath at Bordtai, obviously thrilled by his response. B’jin, for his part, was simply beyond delighted to see the timid boy open up even that much. He could remember only too well the way the boy had first responded to his presence, and seeing him grin so easily was wonderful.

I would like that! Larrikith chirped, and B’jin shook his head. He wasn’t entirely sure how he felt about his dragon eating a firelizard. It wasn’t even because he supposed firelizards were a type of dragon – but because if firelizards were capable of bringing back the plague, wouldn’t eating them be bad for her? As much as he hated Larrikith at times, he wasn’t quite sure he wanted her to die.

How sweet of you, Larrikith responded dryly to B’jin alone, eyeing him thoughtfully as B’jin shrugged. I do not think firelizards are an issue, the little green continued, now including Bordtai in her comments, and I doubt they will hurt us. I agree with Talian’s conclusion. However, and Larrikith was clearly smirking, even if her face wasn’t quite created to house such an expression; her eyes were alive with the expression, and her wings rustled as she shifted them. I hate them, and they taint the minds of humans like a disease. I would enjoy eating them.

Giving the beast a slightly warped look, B’jin shook his head and turned to smile encouragingly at Bordtai. “It’s nice to see someone who is eager to Impress!” B’jin hated being a dragonrider, he had never wanted his dragon, and he couldn’t quite understand the appeal that most Weyrbrats and some rare Stolen saw in the whole deal. But he could encourage those that liked the idea, and he usually brightened considerably when he found one that was actually excited about it. Despite his personal distaste, B’jin had thoroughly enjoyed Searching – the traditional style, not the warped Katilan style – and it was so rare to find someone these days that seemed to thrill in it like they did before.

“What type of dragon do you think you’d like?” The greenrider leaned forward eagerly, smiling excitedly. He wasn’t that interested in the colour – Larrikith would tell him what colour the boy would get (she was just that good!) – rather he was curious about the type of dragon the boy wanted, and he was always eager to hear what happy candidates were anticipating! Personally, B’jin would never wish a green or brown dragon on anyone which only left blue or bronze for the boy in his opinion, anyway. B’jin automatically classed the boy as a future bluerider. He was sweet, and timid enough to be pushed around; B’jin saw bronzeriders as protectors, shields from his rough life as a greenrider. The tiny boy before him was hardly an encouraging figure for future guardianship!

Hate was a strong word in Bordtai’s opinion, but then who was he to judge how strongly the dragon may have felt about the little lizards.  There were a few choice weyrbrats he would have associated the strong word with, though not in public or verbally.  Easier to keep such things quietly to himself.  He was glad to admit that the bullies were finding less and less time to seek him out with everyone beginning to get old enough to stand on the hatching sands.  It meant candidate lessons and harder chores.  Both of which Bordtai enjoyed because it kept everyone else as busy as it kept him.

Hearing the green rider’s question about what sort of dragon he wanted, Bordtai had his answer instantly – and it wasn’t a typical color that most brats would instantly answer with if they were dreaming of such things.  No, Bordtai would have been happy with any color at all.

“A Brave one.”  He answered quickly.  “A dragon who’s not afraid of the larger dragons.  My dragon will be sweet too.  Brave and nice and quiet.”  He stressed the quiet part with a funny look on his face.  “Not like Grith… she talks enough to give anyone a headache.”  Ah – that explained the look on the boy’s face.

“You’re a searchrider… or you were when D’ren allowed searches in the North.  Do you think I have a chance to impress?”  Bordtai’s question was asked slowly.  He was, after all, a little afraid that the answer would be an easy and clear ‘no’.  After all, that’s what the larger Weyrbrats said – that dimglows didn’t impress.  But that didn’t mean Bordtai had completely forgotten how to be hopeful.  Maybe… Just maybe if B’jin believed he could impress, then he’d have a real chance.

A smile immediately wove over B’jin’s lips at the swift answer that came from the boy before him. It was a good answer, and B’jin’s pleased expression said as much. He outright laughed at the mentioning of Grith, brown eyes sparkling with mirth. Even B’jin could hear Grith without the dragon even trying, and the greenrider was notorious for his thick skull and difficulty in hearing dragons other than his own, though he’d had trouble hearing even her way back when!

“Yes, respect for the quiet is nice.” His smile never faded, petting Larrikith’s face and neck as she shifted to sprawl out inelegantly on the ground, the dragon huffing out a deep sigh as she closed her eyes. Her head taking up a great deal of B’jin’s lap, she snuggled closer and watched Bordtai lazily through mostly lidded eyes. Quiet was good, and Larrikith enjoyed the silence as much as she enjoyed it when B’jin filled it with the soft music from his guitar, or absent-minded singing. He didn’t do the latter much, but that only made it the more enjoyable when he did!

“I am,” B’jin agreed with not some small amount of caution. It wasn’t that he was worried so much about Bordtai, but a lot of the folk at Katila did not hold Searchriders in high regard, and it was generally better to pretend one was not a Searcher. B’jin had always loved Searching before the plague. For one, he was good at it, really good at it. But more, as much as he had never wanted to be a dragonrider, it had always been amazing and wonderful to change the lives of those that did. Searching for Katila was shameful and B’jin hated it. It was why he had taken so long to agree to do Searches, and why he had only brought back one Candidate every three to six months.

Of course, two of those were now goldriders, a bronzerider, a brownrider, and he had no doubt that Jisralna would make gold too – possibly even in the upcoming clutch! Krypth had just flown, and if there was even a chance of a gold egg being present, B’jin was quite positive that his candidate would snatch it. Then he would have three goldriders - In a row. Now, that was something to be proud of!

Of course you do. Larrikith answered Bordtai’s question, bringing B’jin out of his egotistical thoughts to blink at Bordtai and then frown slightly, “why would you think otherwise?” he asked, after Larrikith had been kind enough to tell him what it was Bordtai had even asked. He’d gotten rather wrapped up for a moment then! A slight smile touched B’jin’s lips, and he winked at Bordtai. “It isn’t a question of having a chance, kiddo. You’re a Weyrbrat, you were born with a chance to Impress. It’s a question of how good your chances are.”

Pausing, B’jin leaned forward and smiled invitingly at Bordtai. “Even though she’s just a green,” B’jin began, pausing to allow for Larrikith’s required I am so much more than just a green! to be relayed to both humans, “she is the best Search dragon that was ever Hatched! She Searched Lady Jada, and Lady Kahleena, as well as the bronzerider Allendris, and brownrider Talian! Before,” B’jin stressed the word, rather than elaborating on what ‘before’ was, “she searched many others.”

B’jin paused again, and tilted his head as Larrikith slowly lifted her’s from his lap to stare thoughtfully at Bordtai. “Would you like to know what she thinks of you, Bordtai?” It was an open invitation, and B’jin’s gentle smile let Bordtai know he could decline if he didn’t wish to know what the little green dragon thought of him.

OOC; sorry for taking forever, dear :/

Hearing the dragon answer so confidently, Bordtai had brightened a bit only to hesitate when B’jin reiterated that it wasn’t a matter of a chance, but how good of a chance.  Well shards and shells, he supposed that made sense though he was hoping for better reassurance than simply ‘everyone has a chance’ even if that chance was slim.

“Cause I’m so small.  Cause they all call me a ‘dimglow’.”  He said referring to the other, larger Weyrbrats.  He’d been working on his letters, even harder now that he was old enough to stand – not wanting to give any of the adults a reason to overlook him, but truth be told he could still barely scrawl his name and he certainly couldn’t read it if shown to him the next day.  It simply wouldn’t stick.  But if he impressed a dragon, it wouldn’t matter right?  He wasn’t trying to be a crafter.  He wanted to be a dragonrider and fight thread, not write ballads.

Listening to B’jin speak so fondly of his green Larrikith, Bordtai’s hesitation slowly evaporated.  Larrikith was a search dragon and just like B’jin was saying, she was good.  Probably even the best!  If she said he had a ’good’ chance, then he was bound to impress!  Bordtai was nodding his head in acceptance of the offer even before the doubts began to come.

“Oh yes.  I’d really like to know.”  He said eagerly.

But would he?  What if she changed her mind about the confident answer she’d given to him just moments ago?  What if she looked closer at him and realized that no dragon would want him at all?  Biting on his lower lip, he looked at Larrikith with big hazel eyes.  Oh please let her see something in him that another dragon might like!

And B’jin was a fat little lump, and look at the amazing dragon he got! Larrikith put in, causing B’jin to frown irritably at her. The dragon was amused, however, and B’jin’s sour moods rarely got her down. Cheerful colours flickered through her eyes as she watched Bordtai, A dragon doesn’t care about your size, and I’ve met far stupider than you with a dragon attached! She sorted, clearly less than impressed by the odd matches she had seen in her time. B’jin rolled his eyes and smiled at Bordtai.

“Don’t listen to the other kids. They just say that to try and make themselves feel better about their own chances.” B’jin leaned forward with a teasing smile, his voice lowering conspiringly as he whispered, “A quality dragonet would choose a dimglow over a bully any day.” A pause as he leaned back again, watching Bordtai carefully. “Do you know why?” He didn’t really wait for an answer, though he did pause long enough for Bordtai to respond if he wanted to. “Because a quality dragonet will always pick someone with a quirky nature, or interesting personality, or a good sense of humour. A bully will still Impress, true, but they won’t Impress anything you would want, so don’t you worry about them.”

A wide grin spread across B’jin’s lips at Bordtai’s eager acceptance of his offer for Larrikith to ‘Search’ him, and the greenrider looked at his dragon with a tilted head to see what she thought of the boy. Larrikith gave a soft snort, and leaned her head forward, snuffling the boy’s face playfully with warm breath before pulling back. Hrm! Her tone was clearly playful as she tilted her own head, studying Bordtai with one serious, multi-faceted eye as she considered him. Her mind brushed gently against the edges of his own, watching the way the boy reacted to her presence before poking around lightly. Such an interesting child!

I think brown, she mumbled to both child and rider, ignoring the way B’jin’s emotions spiked at the thought and brown eyes widened slightly as he looked at her in surprise. But he’s so sweet! A brown? B’jin, ever a great hater of brown dragons, wasn’t quite able to picture such a bond himself, and he turned to look at Bordtai with knit brows as he tried to imagine it. The child was just too placid for such a horrible, nasty piece of work like a brown! Definitely not green, and you seem wrong for a blue. The dragon gave a physical shrug as she withdrew her mind from where she’d been poking around in Bordtai’s though she still touched on the edge in order to speak clearly to him.

B’jin pet her nose with light fingers as she turned to rest her head on his lap once more, and he threw a wink at Bordtai. “You won’t always be the smallest, then.” He teased, hiding his own discomfort at the idea of such a gentle child bonding to what he considered a terrible, awful colour, “But you may be waiting longer than the other ‘brats. Not many browns have been clutched.” More than the bronze and gold, but not nearly enough to keep up their assumed ratio; hopefully that would change as the turns rolled by – and the boy was young!

Well Bordtai had to admit that the green dragon and rider both were defiantly putting an effort into encouraging him and Bordtai would have had to be deaf and blind to not realize it.  He might be a dimglow with letters, but Bordtai was not deaf or blind and that was brightening him considerably.  They were both so confident that he would do just fine on the sands with time.  Perhaps he just needed to stop worry about if it would happen and just remember that he had plenty of turns to wait upon the sands.  After all, if he impressed now there would be no doubt that he’d have a hard time keeping up with the larger candidates and he’d only slow down his own dragon!  Maybe it would be better if his dragon didn’t come right away.  Give Bordtai time to eat more vegetables!

Bordtai took what B’jin had to say about ‘quality’ dragonets and chewed on the idea.  He certainly couldn’t deny that some dragon’s struck him as ‘quality’ over other ones.  It was like comparing Larrikith to Grith.  Goodness, he still remembered a few turns ago how the dragon had nearly squished him in her excitement to be helpful.  Bordtai couldn’t help but shudder at the memory.

Finding Larrikith’s nose sniffing him with her warm breath, he couldn’t help but be dragged back to the present with a huge smile on his face.  He was being searched!  And by the best search dragon in the Weyr, there was no doubt in his mind about that.  What would she have to say?  He watched her eagerly as she seemed to put quite a bit of thought into it.

When she said brown, his jaw had dropped for a moment as he looked from dragon to rider and back to the dragon once more.  Had he heard her right?  A brown?  Really?!  Not a green?  Not a blue, but a Brown?  Tossing an arm into the air, Bordtai couldn’t help but give a small hoot and holler at the news.  B’jin was right, perhaps one day he wouldn’t always be the smallest!

When he heard B’jin mention waiting longer as not many browns have been clutched, Bordtai settled back down but the smile was still firmly planted on his face.  “If Larrikith says I can impress a brown, then I don’t mind waiting.  Maybe it will give me time to grow a little more.  And besides, we have new queens!  That means there will be more hatchings and more hatchings means more chances for browns.”  He said with excitement.

Numbers.  He loved numbers and they were beginning to look good.  Not only had a queen been a surprise in the last clutch, but the clutch on the sands now held a gold egg too!  Sure she had to grow up, but soon there would be more queens flying and clutching.  And that was a good thing, since everyone knew that Nirinath seemed to be so inactive when it came to flights – so opposite of her oldest daughter!

You made him very happy. B’jin murmured to Larrikith, fingers lightly dancing over her eyeridge as the green dragon lay her head once more across his lap. B’jin folded his arms over her face and leaned forward comfortably, resting his weight on the top of her head. Larrikith puffed out a sigh, eye closing in content. The truth doesn’t always have to hurt, love.

The enthusiasm the child expressed at the change to Impress was warming, and when push came to shove, it was that very attitude that B’jin enjoyed and often went out of his way to seek back before the Plague, when Searching was an honour and not a stain upon him of lives ruined. Searching was supposed to be a magnificent opportunity, not a horrible and traumatising event that Tsuen’s requirements had forced it to become. The greenrider’s expression was gentle, pleased and a light smile tugged his lips up into a warm smile. It really was wonderful to see someone so happy to hear what his dragon thought of him!

That, too, was a large reason why he and Larrikith so determinedly only Searched those they felt would Impress particularly well. Young men, and their fathers, were far more likely to allow a Search to be answered if the Searchee would become a bronzerider, or a brownrider! It was B’jin’s opinion that anyone could Impress a green or a blue; it didn’t take anything particular to attract their attention. That didn’t mean they weren’t special, they were, but Searching a brown or a bronze – and having them so Impress – was far more worthy in B’jin’s opinion than ‘another green’. Larrikith, of course, was the best her colour had to offer. But she was still a green.

B’jin, being holder raised, was more than a little opinionated and obnoxious on the rules and qualities of any given colour, and the lifestyle habits they tended to bring forth in someone. Something his dragon found more than a little hilarious, and a fun topic to poke at and tease when she was in the mood. Luckily for both B’jin and Bordtai, at that very moment she was far more asleep than not, and was not in the mood to taunt her rider.

“That is very true!” B’jin agreed, grinning brightly at the boy’s latching onto the young gold, and the future gold that would be appearing amoungst the future clutches. Soon, hopefully, the dragon population would be returning to what it had once been, and the dragonriders would be able to reclaim the proud rank that had once been theirs without question. For now, however, B’jin leaned forward eagerly, at teasing smile on his lips. “What do you think Krypth will clutch us this time?”

[Spoiler=OOC]The Solar Flare clutch hasn’t been laid yet; she flew the month prior to the start of this thread, and will clutch 2 months after it. :)
