I'shan was a lot of things. He was bored, overexertion, confused, and frustrated, but more than anything else in the world, he was lonely. N'gelt only had time for sex these days, and even that seemed like it was becoming a rarer and rarer thing. The wily little bluerider had managed to alienate far too many of his friends, though he hadn't yet put the pieces together and noticed that it all came when his relationship began. How could his being in a controlling relationship possibly affect his friendships?

With I'shan, there was always the chance that he did know, though. There was always the chance that somewhere deep underneath his skin, he knew but chose to lie to himself and say he didn't. I'shan had never been very good at facing or accepting the truth, and he was more than happy to tell himself absolutely anything if he thought it would keep the pain away for a little longer. Denial was his greatest bedfellow in times of hardship.

He sighed and sank down into the heated water, soft eyes tracing the shadows on the walls. A couple dim glowbaskets kept the room at an acceptable dusk-like level of lightning, just enough to amplify the sleep-inducing touch of the hot water. His fingers drummed idly on the side of the bath. I'm so tired of the island, Ilv

Do not let it trouble you. I am here, watching over the boy. I will return to pick you up once you are clean and content The dragon's words were so laced with love and reassurance that I'shan couldn't help but be comforted. A smile appeared on his uncharacteristically dour face. Thanks, Ilv. I won't take too long. I just needed to rest.

I'shan wanted to rest, but he also realized how badly he didn't want to be alone anymore. Sitting out on that island was torture. He supposed after his bath, he might go to the dining hall just to chat with some people and catch up on the latest gossip...something to rouse it's mind from it's latest slump. Yes, that would be nice. That would be very nice indeed.

He sighed again, this time happily, and sank beneath the water's surface. He let both the bath and Ilveriath's warmth envelop him, holding him safe. He wished he never had to return to the surface.

Valerian had managed to get a few more hours of work put in on his hut that day. His hut. It still seemed a bit surreal that he was building his own home, which was odd considering he had bonded with a dragon and that should have been the measure for what was surreal. After all, he had been young when the dragons had vanished though he never wanted to believe it and still had day dreams of riding one or Impressing one. Veeth may not have been the first dragon he saw once he was introduced to the reality that there was still an active weyr, but his blue was special and represented more than Valerian had been willing to share with his friends. Momentarily lost to the sappy emotions, Valerian patted Veeth and sent a wave of affection to the blue who crooned and returned the feelings before focusing on his landing.

The day had been long with a class and then working on his hut and Valerian decided it was more than the appropriate time to go slip into a bath and relax for a bit. He hoped it would be a long and quiet soak but it was always hard to tell when others might pop in with the same idea or think it was social hour. So the hope was for a long and solitary bath but the reality was likely going to be ten minutes top. It sucked but Valerian would work with it all the same. As he dismounted, Valerian gave a quick look around and wrapped his arms around Veeth’s neck for a hug, “you’re improving on your landing every time. Go ahead and wander off if you want. I’ll call for you when I’m done.”

Out of some odd habit, Valerian removed his boots before entering the bathhouse. A part of him figured the dust on his boots would only turn to mud or a big mess if he stepped in any water inside and he sure didn’t want to have to clean it up or sit through some lecture about manners, since everything always seemed to lead down that road. When he came across a room, Valerian peeked inside and while he saw some clothing scattered about, he didn’t see the owner. With a shrug and assuming the owner was off chasing a green, he slipped inside and stripped off his shirt and pants, leaving everything in a messy pile off to the side. It was only when he had a foot dipping into the blissfully hot water that green eyes focused in on someone else already in the bath, submerged for whatever reason.

Valerian froze and eyed the man suspiciously, trying to figure out who it was.

Alas, all good things must come to an end.

I'shan rose to the surface, dark hair clinging to his forehead and eyes red from the hot water. Oh, look! A person! The bluerider wiped his eyes a little and blinked, at first unbelieving, but then accepting. "Oh! Who is that?" he asked, his voice echoing in the otherwise silent room.

It is Valerian

"Oh." I'shan paused, unable to think of much else to say right off. Valerian...one of I'shan's many unwon prizes. I'shan had made several efforts to get the boy to talk to him since nabbing him from Harper Hall, but the bluerider was always met with the one response worse than anger: total indifference.

I'shan wasn't sure why he felt such a dogged need to be recognized or acknowledged by the little harper, but shards was it nagging. Maybe it was because  Erisi had been such a failure, and now Sanderon was...not a failure, but for Faranth's sake, the boy shot Ilveriath.

I'shan hoped that whole thing would work out, but it was hard for even him to be optimistic these days.

Now, he sat blinking at Valerian, trying to decide what to say. It didn't help that the young man was naked. Well, both of them were, but at least I'shan was in the water. His initial thought was to invite Valerian into the water, but what would N'gelt think? People bathed together all the time, right? Well, they danced together, too.

Shards.

I'shan smiled widely, almost too widely. "Hey there Valerian. Long time no see. It's been....wow, since New Turn's a guess...?" His enthusiasm and confusion dulled a bit, replaced by a soft smile of freshly-recalled gratitude. "....Thanks again for helping me that night."

Of course it had to be him.

Be nice to him. He doesn’t seem… right today. Veeth had a point. As Valerian stood there wondering if he should continue getting into the water or go find another bath, he noticed I’shan wasn’t quite as quirky as he usually was. He supposed being attached to the Weyrsecond would dull most anyone though he had to put a lot of effort into not rolling his eyes at the thought of changing because of someone else. Valerian simply couldn’t comprehend why you wouldn’t just be yourself at all times.

“Ilveriath’s ri—I’shan.” He knew the name, finally, though it was hard to forget the name of someone that was trying to bleed all over you. Valerian couldn’t say when he actually took the time or interest in remembering anything about the man besides being the rider of the amazing Ilveriath but as he continued getting into the bath, slowly sinking into the hot water, he decided I’shan could have the honour of knowing.

“I wanted to check on you. That night or the next day… but figured you didn’t need it,” Valerian wasn’t about to admit to being slightly put out by the way the older bluepair had ditched him, though Ilveriath’s words of gratitude had helped. He was fond of the dragon – the first one he had seen up close and was able to ride, though he was unconscious at the time – and didn’t care that he potentially was played all for the safety of I’shan. “You seem to have recovered well though.” He wasn’t exactly the master of small talk, especially when he had been focused on a quiet bath, and wasn’t quite sure what else to say. It was I’shan after all, and they were both extreme opposites when it came to personalities, even with the observation that the older man seemed a bit out of it. But most riders were vain and a comment about their appearance looking as fine as ever seemed a safe bet to avoid any dramatics I’shan could slip into. Valerian really wasn’t a fan of wailing, just like he preferred to avoid blood. Somehow, the man he sat across from had managed to get him to deal with both.

Since they were now bathing together, he supposed he’d try the small talk a bit more. It couldn’t hurt and Veeth seemed pleased at the idea of him socialising a bit more. “Get into anymore trouble lately?” Valerian gave a little grin to show he was teasing with the phrasing, still linking it to the Turn Over fight. He had no idea what I’shan had been up to since; having not really paid attention to people that didn’t directly affect or concern him.

I'shan smiled and relaxed a little bit, sinking lazily into the water until it's warmth rose to the underside of his chin. "I wouldn't have minded it," he said, his own way of saying he would have liked it. He'd been all alone in the infirmary that night, but as much as he'd wanted to sulk over it at the time, everyone who would have normally come to check on him had something better to do.

"Not too much lately," he confessed. "I'm wardening a weyr arrest on the island, and otherwise just keeping the house up. N'gelt is busy these days," he said. It felt awkward to talk about his personal life with Valerian. It felt awkward taking to him at all, since the harper seemed to have put in a great deal of effort to ignore him. Of course, I'shan didn't know Valerian well. He didn't know the true depths of the young man's indifference. If he did, he would have been even more thrilled to have his attention.

"It's just been a big fat mess, I guess..." he sighed, thinking back to his recent revelations on that subject. Things really were a mess. He'd been wearing blinders for a long time now, and the worst part was, he couldn't even really pinpoint how long it had been.

In spite of it all, the bluerider managed to match the weyrling's teasing smile. "And how about you? I've been seeing you in flights lately. Got your first win yet?" He knew that was a common, sporting discussion among blueriders. He wasn't as raunchy or callous about it as many, but he'd become tender to that subject in certain ways, too...he'd only recently become aware of his own bad conduct during flights. Oh well. May as well play it off for laughs, since they were discussing troublemaking.

A smile was attempted when I’shan said he would have liked the visit but they both knew it was a bit too late to go back and correct the fact neither of them sought the other out after everything had calmed down. Still, it was nice to hear that he would have been appreciated for a few minutes during all the craziness his own life was currently going through. Still, he wasn’t about to make lunch dates with the man because of one moment of possible bonding and thankfully I’shan either felt the same or was just happy to continue talking about himself and blathered on about his life. “Who was stupid enough to end up under weyr arrest and what’d you do to have to guard the idiot on a deserted island surrounded by deep and cold water?” Valerian rolled his eyes at I’shan, figuring the bluerider was being punished for one of his whimsical waltzing through life stunts he seemed to enjoy.

N’gelt… N’gelt… that name sounded familiar, but why? Valerian thought about it a little longer, more so than he normally would, and finally remembered that was the new Weyrsecond. Another douche to replace the douche. What forward thinkers dragonriders could be. He supposed N’gelt could possibly count as legitimately being a forward thinker since it sounded like he had tamed a bluerider into playing the abused lowly maid and cook that greenriders often filled the position of. “Seriously? You’re playing house for a guy you barely see? I thought even you had more sense than that.” Maybe N’gelt rocked I’shan’s world during sex, whenever they saw each other, and that was enough to keep his crazy Searchrider satisfied with a broom in hand the rest of the time.

Of course flights had to be mentioned! Valerian suspected it was done entirely to tease him and take some heat off himself but either way, I’shan was far more cunning than he was being credited for. “No and I’m starting to think winning really is the safer choice,” Valerian’s words were almost mumbled as he did his best not to frown before slipping further into the water until it came up to his nose. He stayed like that for several heartbeats while trying not to pout before submerging completely. He didn’t stay under long, just enough to wet his hair and have hands rub several times over his face before resurfacing. “Veeth is enjoying the chase though,” he managed to say in a more normal, and therefore neutral, tone as fingers ran through his wavy locks to push them back from his face.

I'shan frowned. "It's not an issue of sense," he said, bristling softly, though the fire just wasn't there. It was an issue of sense, though not in the way Valerian was currently implying. "It's an issue of...I don't know."

The bluerider wasn't his usual, talkative self. He shifted in the water a bit and ran his hands through his hair, bruising stray bits out of his face. "Kid on the island got in a fight and has tried to escape a few times. D'ren put me in charge,  Ii guess because I'm the one who brought him in," the blue muttered. "He's not so bad, though. He's calmed down a lot, and he seems to have made friends with the Weyrleader's bronze." Then again, who hadn't? I'shan wanted badly to feel optimistic about Sanderon, but it was still too early to tell.

N'gelt was an even more pressing matter, though. I'shan wasn't content with a broom, and he never would be. He hated the broom. He wanted to burn it! Shards, he was just so bored! An indignant look showed on his face in the low glowlight as he slumped against the lip of the bath.

I'shan looked towards Valerian and frowned. "You'll get one soon. It takes time for dragons to really get the hang of the chase," he said, but he quickly realized Val wasn't looking for encouragement. When the weyrling blue came up from the water, he would find I'shan looming much closer and looking down at him with much, much more intensity.

"What's wrong, bud? You need to talk?"

Green eyes opened wide at I’shan suddenly being so close to him. He made a quick mental note to never turn his back or duck under water with the bluerider around. Who knew how quickly he moved or what he intended! It was hard to say if it was a new cautious approach to blueriders in general thanks to D’hys and Z’ia or if it was simply something that I’shan warranted on his own given how odd the man was but still Valerian decided to keep an eye on the wily rider.

The wide eyes narrowed into a look of suspicion when I’shan suddenly turned parental or maybe just brotherly since I’shan acting as anyone’s father was a frightening idea. Why did he care? What sort of information was he looking to get? “The trouble kid on the isle is probably pulling one over on you. How quick do you think it is to recover from being pissed about the situation with acting out or whatever idiot stunt he pulled to becoming a sweet kid that wants off the isle? He’s playing you, I’shan, and you’re falling for it.” That wasn’t really what was on his mind and it wasn’t what I’shan was asking about but Valerian gave a smug smirk at the end of pointing out the flaws in thinking a Stolen kid that hated them all was instantly okay. No doubt he was already getting special treatment with visitors or favourite meals and hobbies brought to him. If he was right and the kid was playing them all for a chance to escape again, Valerian wondered if he’d actually laugh or not.

Regardless, his mind was spinning together crazy scenarios about someone he probably had met once but didn’t care to remember instead of giving I’shan a real answer about real issues. He studied the older man for a moment, as he thought on Veeth’s silent urgings that he should trust someone else, especially a bluerider, if he wanted advice. “I don’t like the lack of control over myself after a flight and how… how people might not always want to… comfort you… at that time.” Even with that mental note fresh in his mind, Valerian sank a bit into the water again until it covered his blabbering mouth. I’shan would no doubt laugh at him having an issue with taking what wasn’t offered.

"I hope your wrong," I'shan groaned, the only response he offered to the assessment of Sanderon. I'shan honestly had no idea where that would go, but he wanted badly to feel like he'd had a positive influence in at least ONE of his searchees lives. He rolled his head pathetically towards Valerian and sighed.

I'shan recognized flight angst when he saw it. An empathetic frown appeared as he thought back to his own, which had been tormenting him an awful lot of late. He inched a little closer, trying to seem reassuring without being too creepy, and shook his head.

"It sucks, doesn't it?" he said. "They don't really tell it like it is in weyrling class, I guess. They sure sugarcoated it when I was taking classes back at Fort." He pouted a bit and chewed on his tongue as he tried to think of what to say. Valerian, usually so indifferent and confident, sounded so...caught off guard by the topic. I'shan didn't want to assume that something had happened, but when Val made his stuttering comment about 'comfort' and sank into the water, there was no question.

"Aw..Valerian..." I'shan said with empathy. He wanted to reach out and hug the boy, but he didn't think that would help the situation much. "I know how that goes...it's an ugly part of it, you know? It's....so easy to get carried away and hurt someone without even realizing you're doing it. I'm sorry. Do you need to talk about it? We're both blueriders here..." He paused and swallowed hard. "I've..done things that I regret, too..."

Plenty of them. He still remembered a time when he treated his flight partners like princesses, not ravaged and harassed them. He remembered when he didn't get carried away and jerk greens around while he was drunk. He remembered when he didn't threaten greenriders with chasing their dragon and pounding them into oblivion. Shame tinted his face and weighed his voice down, more bitter then normal thanks to recent events.

"Who was it, Val? Anyone you know?"

Valerian was getting a little tired of everyone saying it was all a part of flights and it was a natural thing to happen. How was this acceptable? Even Talian now accepted it and that only made it worse. He supposed he was a true dragonrider now though if everyone kept telling him it was normal. Forget the graduation, he was apparently ready to go now! Pushing himself back up so his head was above the water once more, he finally replied, “Does it matter if I know the person or not? It still shouldn’t have happened.” He glared at I’shan for a split second before letting it slip back into his neutral expression. He wasn’t really mad at the bluerider for being curious since he seemed genuine in trying to help. It was still himself he was angry with and how one of the few friendships he had finally shown interest in having was now changed, possibly even ruined.

“I’ve been told my best options are to grab another guy that lost or to have a fuck buddy arranged that I can go to after the flights,” he looked I’shan right in the eye, studying his Searchrider and trying to gauge what type of man he truly was. I’shan was quirky, both in personality and appearance, but enjoyed life in general but more importantly, as a bluerider. Or, he did anyway. There was mention of regrets so perhaps I’shan really did understand what he was going through since Valerian didn’t get the sense he was being lied to or manipulated. I’shan likely wasn’t capable of that anyway. “Are those really the best options? What do you do when you lose? Do you have someone lined up to help you out?” His teachers always liked how inquisitive he was, perhaps I’shan would as well if he was so keen on helping.

I'shan frowned at the glare. He wasn't sure what he'd done, but it wasn't too hard to arrive at a couple sound guesses. The older bluerider sighed and resisted the urge to sink down into the water himself. If he was lucky, he'd drown.

Valerian's comment snapped him out of his self-pity. He reminded himself that he was trying to help Val, not sulk for himself. I'shan was consciously bothered by how often he had to remind himself to be a good person, instead of it just coming naturally. Was it normal to be this self-conscious about being selfish?

"Val...of course it's important if you know the person or not," I'shan said softly. "...I mean, it's a bad thing either way. But shells, kid. No one wants to hurt someone they care about. No one wants to have to look at them every day and know what happened..."

There was a slightly haunted quality to his voice, a hint of horror that he was trying his best to fend off. He was thinking about a number of people, but specifically B'jin. He sighed and shook his head, remorseful and almost resigned. You're a bluerider! B'jin had said. I'shan shivered.

"There are...several ways to deal with it. And none of them are really that good," he confessed. "You can line someone up to help you out, but then you have to get to them...or they have to get to you. And well..the first is dangerous to other people and the second is dangerous to them. It's not really a good idea to go charging through the Weyr like that, and if they come to you they may run in to other flight losers." Pouting.

"I usually just hang with the other losers. That's gotten me beaten up before, though. I mean, I'm not a big guy...and sometimes even if I want to get away, well..." He bit his lip. "Greenriders sometimes accuse us of not knowing how they feel. That's not always true, though." He laughed nervously, and terribly.

"That's...how I met N'gelt, actually. He grabbed me. I didn't hold it against him since I know the feeling of being flight drunk, but when you think about it...it's...kind of fucked up," he confessed. "And I've really acted bad in flights a few times, Val. I have had to apologize to a lot of people about it...I still need to apologize to a lot of people about it..." He sighed again and brushed his hair back once more, fiddling to keep himself occupied.

"There's not an easy answer. It sucks, and I've been fucked in the head lately because of it, too. I hurt someone I care about a while back. He forgave me, but I still feel like shit. I'm not saying that for pity or anything, I guess I just...want you to know that I'm not screwing with you. I get it..."

“You talk a lot,” Valerian stated the obvious in a bland tone but he didn’t mind this time. I’shan had given him more to think about and the bluerider had shared, vaguely, his own experiences and even alluded to being in the same situation right then. It was odd how it helped knowing it actually wasn’t unusual to have regrets despite the random encounters after flights being a common occurrence. It didn’t make him feel better, but it helped relieve a tiny portion of the stress he had placed upon himself for being a monster.

He wasn’t sure what to say to all of the confessions though his natural reaction was to laugh at how I’shan had ended up with N’gelt. But he couldn’t do that since he could even understand the attraction. He hadn’t fully approved of being grabbed by D’hys and Z’ia once he realised he had been but hadn’t he stayed and enjoyed himself instead of screaming or running away? There was a strange lure to the unknown and an attraction to a hint of danger; which those two definitely had around them. Valerian didn’t want to spend every day in their company but he was starting to learn enough about his personal tastes when it came to sex to know that he wouldn’t back away if grabbed again. Maybe they were the answer to his problem about being flight drunk. Assuming at least one of them always entered and lost the same flights as him.

For of that inner babbling he was doing, Valerian knew he was once again avoiding the subject of his screw up and was again eyeing I’shan to determine if he should or could trust the bluerider. He lifted his arm from the water to watch the liquid run in rivulets and drop from the tips of his fingers in further silent contemplation. A moment later he lowered his arm and looked back to I’shan. “It was someone I know but you’re not getting a name,” he had probably said too much with that bit of information but it wasn’t likely the self-absorbed rider would know who his closest friends were on top of figuring out everyone he knew. “The person forgave me as well but… I haven’t forgiven me. I guess that’s good that we’re so bothered. Shows we’re human and can still care.” It was his own little attempt to cheer up I’shan, though Valerian wasn’t usually one to pander to the needs of others. But I’shan was clearly going out of his way to help him and since he had given a new perspective on things, he deserved a little respite from the mental self-abuse as well.

“And you’re right about arranging someone. I don’t want to risk further casualties so I’ll hang around after flights and go from there.” He looked and sounded glum at the prospect but Valerian knew it was the best option and he’d no doubt grow used to it soon enough.

I'shan's eyes narrowed. "You asked a question," he pointed out, irritated by Valerian's little stab at him. He didn't bristle so much as usual, though. He just sighed and looked back down at the bubbling water, mind whirling at a mile a minute as he tried to keep himself in line. Selfish and impulsive, I'shan had a hard time keeping himself reigned in when things like this popped up. He bit his tongue and listened regardless, listening to the younger bluerider's concerns and remembering vividly how it felt to have those same concerns himself, especially a a youngster.

"I didn't ask you who it was," I'shan said, tone more mellow. "And I'm not going to. I probably wouldn't know them, anyhow," he said. He figured it was one of the classmates or something. He managed a small smile at Valerian's sideways attempt to cheer him up, though I'shan thought it seemed like Valerian was trying to convince himself as much as anyone else.

"You're a good kid," he pointed out a moment later. "A lot of blueriders dive into it..make a lifestyle out of it," he pointed out. I'shan remembered almost falling into those habits several times himself, even recently. He looked vaguely distressed at the thought. "Flights can be a lot of fun, but they get hairy pretty easy, too. I know everyone prattles on about how it's just part of rider life, but it really is true." He frowned helplessly. "I wish I could give you a better answer. The truth is, everyone ultimately suffers because of it. Greenriders get saddled with a nasty reputation because of it, too."

He bit his lip. "I always wanted to be better than that, but I guess I lack the self-control. You have a better head on your shoulders than I do, though." Admitting that wasn't easy, and it showed on his contorted face. "I think you're gonna be fine. I'm glad your friend is okay."

Valerian wasn’t sure he could safely say that Talian was okay. His friend tried to appear like he was after they attempted to talk about it but his Harper-trained eye didn’t believe it for a moment. Something had shifted within Talian thanks to J’ver’s disgusting paws all over him but Valerian knew he had only done further damage. Did they still have a friendship? He liked to think so but at the same time he was too afraid to pursue it again, worried that Talian simply wasn’t Talian anymore and Valerian knew it was his fault. He gave a nod, thinking that slight non-committal action would be enough to satisfy I’shan as he struggled through being courteous.

“I’ve talked with B’jin as well so I have a slight idea of what happens on both ends now but it still sucks no matter what.” Valerian exhaled slowly and resisted sinking lower in the water but only because I’shan was still crowding against his personal bubble. “But, I know what I’ll do now when I play the role of loser.” His green gaze took in I’shan carefully, trying to look at him in a new light as a fellow loser. Perhaps it would be different with the thrill of the chase and flightlust coursing through his veins but could he really see himself tumbling into the nearest bed with the man that secreted him off to a strange new existence? It was possible; it wasn’t like he thought he’d hop in bed with two other men and enjoy it nor did he think he’d like sex so much in general once he had the right person igniting the fire.

“So I guess I’ll see you in the loser circle. Unless… what was his name again? Unless the guy you play house for forbids Ilveriath to chase.” Valerian hoped that wasn’t the case. He liked the blue dragon and didn’t want to think about him suffering because some jerk didn’t want to share the rider.

"It doesn't always suck," I'shan offered, trying to be positive. It was hard to be positive about things like this, especially when they loomed so fresh on the mind. It still charmed I'shan to see the young man so concerned for the damage he'd wrought. I'shan wished he'd had that level of consideration for some of his victims over the turns.

I'shan slid down in the water, trying to hide the new frown that had appeared on his face. "He can't stop Ilv from chasing..." the bluerider muttered. N'gelt didn't have that level of power over him! Did he?

The bluerider sighed. "It hasn't gotten to that point yet," he grumbled. In fact, N'gelt had been oddly understanding about flights. He hadn't even batted an eyelash when I'shan won Par'a, and she was a woman. That had been a bad day, but it became much more tolerable when I'shan got home to find that his partner wasn't angry with him.

"...He wouldn't do that to me," I'shan asserted afterwards, more to himself. Maybe this was why he'd been so interested in (and so badly behaved during) flights lately. It was a sort of freedom that he hadn't missed until it was gone. The bluerider sighed. "I guess flights are good outlets. I'm really sorry you've had such bad luck so far, though...it'll get easier as time passes," he said, trying to switch back to a more supportive role rather than whining about himself. He'd become increasingly aware of his own selfishness lately, and he was doing his best to curb it. The results were mixed, but right now he wasn't failing too badly.

He almost felt privileged that Valerian was bothering to talk to him.

Then, a delayed reaction: "N'gelt," I'shan said with a small laugh, amused by Valerian's dry indifference. It had maddened I'shan to have his name constantly forgotten, but now that it was no longer him, it was funny!

Valerian let I’shan continue to convince himself that N’gelt didn’t own him in every way. It certainly wasn’t for his benefit since the blue weyrling didn’t really care what type of relationship I’shan was in since it didn’t affect him in the long run. It seemed like it was needed though and Valerian wasn’t sure if it helped I’shan in the end. When I’shan finally decided to bring the topic of flights getting easier back into his rambling, Valerian tried his best not to eye roll and hopped back to the self-convincing instead. “If he did try to control you to such a degree, I have confidence in your ability to do what’s best for Ilveriath.” If not, I’shan would find, like Talian had, that he had a good hand for smacking upside the head when someone had done something incredibly stupid.

The beginnings of a smile appeared without permission at I’shan’s laugh. It took a moment for Valerian to realise the older bluerider wasn’t about to ramble on again about the brownrider but it was in answer to his question in regards to the man’s name. I’shan was an odd one and it seemed to be contagious. “Yeah, him.” He should probably put more effort into remembering the name since he was currently the Weyrsecond. Then again, why bother? He hadn’t attended the big spectacle but everyone talked about how D’ren told off the Weyrsecond in public. They’d likely have a new one soon.

Finding that subject boring, Valerian skipped back to dragons, ignoring the flights since he felt they would only go in circles the more they talked about it, and opened his mouth to ask a question before quickly closing it. There was a desire to visit Ilveriath and Valerian even suspected Veeth would make the older dragon into a good friend, but it suddenly seemed awkward to ask if he could. Besides, he’d likely only sit there staring at the beautiful sky blue dragon, transfixed by his presence, partly due to his colouring, but mostly due to Ilveriath being the first dragon he had seen up close.

Valerian wrinkled his nose over his potential weirdness near Ilveriath and almost laughed when a new theory came to him. Maybe I’shan was odd because of the dragon and Ilveriath was the one corrupting them. It was almost worth asking to spend time with the bluepair to test that theory alone. Instead, he thought about his own dragon, “I should probably get moving. Who knows who Veeth is flirting with right now.”

"I like to think that I'm not that much of a wimp," I'shan said, pouting momentarily. He lifted his hands and smoothed his hair back, trying to get the stray wet pieces off of his forehead. He could sense the shortness and boredom in Valerian's voice, which initially wounded the bluerider's delicate feelings, but after a moment of thought he decided he probably deserved it. He still found a small smile for the younger bluerider and nodded in acceptance.

"All right," I'shan said, eyes downcast. It was late and he was tired. Bed would probably suit him, but he already expected he would have a lot of trouble sleeping. He slowly started to rise from the warm water, initially uncomfortable in the much cooler air, and reached for a towel. I'shan was silent for a few moments as he toweled himself off and reached for a robe.

"Hey," he finally said, turning around the face the weyrling. It was dark, but I'shan's nervous but wholly sincere smile was just barely visible in the glowlight. "Thanks for talking. I guess it's just a bunch of crap to you, but I'm glad I'm one of the ones you asked for advice," I'shan said. He figured the notoriously indifferent young man wouldn't care much for sappy words, so in spite of his desire to babble on about how much he wished he could be a part of his searchees lives, he just grinned.

"You're gonna be just fine. Stay awesome, okay? I gotta go get some sleep."

Before he made it out of the room, though, I'shan stopped one more time. "Also, just so you know..." he said, pausing briefly. "Ilveriath likes Veeth. Says he's sweet and easy to talk to."
