The greenrider was confused; why did D'ren and Tsuen keep putting him on the kitchen roster? Obviously, they were suckers for punishment, or on a self imposed diet that worked better when their food came to them burned... Of course, that would actually work better if the kitchen staff hadn't very quickly come to realise that the greenrider (and many of his brethren) were about as much help in the cooking corners as a firelizard leading a wing. An incredible hindrance, and completely beyond teaching, B'jin had been shelved as 'Health Hazard' and told to do nothing above or beyond vegetable peeling. B'jin, deciding peeling vegetables was boring had his feet kicked up on top of a wine barrel and was watching the goings on around him with amusement as he nibbled on a cinnamon roll.

Whatever the reason behind putting him in the Kitchen, B'jin wasn't really going to complain. Two months of sitting around doing nothing sounded good to him, and the best pickings came from right where he was sitting. Of course, B'jin wasn't the type to wheedle things out of the kitchen staff with promises or his body, but he was more than willing to exchange his voice for food (or drink) and more than a few of the other workers were paid in artwork. B'jin might not be the most amazing word smith in the field of Harpers, but he had spent several turns learning to get what he wanted, from whom he wanted, when he wanted it. Bartering for his food had always been at the top of the list.

Thieving a slice of hot wherry as a serving tray wandered past, B'jin set his cinnamon roll on his knee and pulled strips off the slice, following the grain of the meat as he then nibbled on those pieces. He held it carefully off to the side. As lovely as juicy wherry was, he'd prefer not to ruin his clothing with drips! Humming to himself contentedly as he watched the group of women gossiping over a heap of steaming pots, B'jin finished his slice of meat and licked his fingers delicately, eyes sparkling as one of the younger women threw a hand towel at him. Tossing her a laughing wink, B'jin caught the towel, dropped it in his lap, and snatched the new cinnamon roll out of the air when she tossed that his way too.

Why did people bitch about kitchen working, again?

Valerian stood outside the kitchen, staring blandly at the entrance to where his new torture waited. He wasn’t sure if he was pleased or not to be rotated back into the chore schedule since it had been nice not to do such menial tasks but it also showed Veeth was maturing, though he was taking his time on growing when compared to his clutchmates, and he was closer to becoming a full-fledged dragonrider. Even with that thought cheering him on, Valerian had to wonder who in their right mind decided he would make for a good assistant for anything involving food. The same fool that thought he’d make for a good hunter, obviously. Maybe those in charge were in need of a vacation if they kept making such odd decisions.

Turning to Veeth, Valerian still felt odd not having to kneel down to lay a hand on the head of the pretty blue though it wasn’t like the growth spurt happened over night. “Sorry, fella, you’re a bit too big to be following me inside now.” Not for the first time, Valerian wondered which of them hated being apart more. It wasn’t like either of them panicked when there was a wall between them but Veeth was just such a steady constant since Impression that it was odd not to have the dragon at his side despite him always being present in his mind. “If I have my way, I won’t be in there long.” He really didn’t want to spend the day slaving over a fire or whatever other torture they could think up. Besides, Veeth still had some training to do today and that had to be a good excuse for leaving early.

With Veeth trotting over to lie down out of the way, Valerian wandered into the kitchen, only to be greeted by some crazy woman who didn’t know any better, giving him a basket of vegetables to peel. Green eyes were wide in bewilderment, wondering why he hadn’t even been properly greeted or asked what he could do. Of course the end result would have been the same, though he questioned his ability to peel anything, so they either knew a Harper and weyrling was useless or they didn’t trust Northerners, or anyone, with their sacred art form. Not in the mood to argue since that would likely only serve to add to his work, Valerian headed for a table where someone already sat. A familiar someone for that matter. “I forgot you were assigned here as well.” Valerian greeted B’jin in his usual blunt manner, unconcerned with niceties when it came to the greenrider. Sharp green eyes took in B’jin’s lazy posture and the food surrounding him and Valerian arched a brow as he plopped the basket of veggies on the table. “Official food-taster, I take it?” That wasn’t fair! He could excel at that part of kitchen work, but no, he had peeling to do instead.

Valerian flopped down across from B’jin and stared bleakly at the vegetables and peeler.

Clothes repairs. Yeah, right.

It had been easy to convince one of the girls who had been assigned fishing as their chore to swap. In fact there had been a little bit of a fight between Fayleri and Visltine over who would get to exchange their duty with Volfetti. Eventually Fayleri had won out, with her weavercrafting experience being pulled over Visltine's beastcrafting. Of course, during the trip Volfetti let the weyrling tend to her Green and worked the nets and lines for her instead. While she wasn't entirely sure her stance on dragons anymore, she still supported the weyrlings. After all, from this class they were almost all entirely stolen Northerners.

The haul they had managed to bring in was enormous and she was certainly glad for the aid of the dragons to transport it back. Getting it into the kitchens was another matter however.

A large sack was slung over her shoulder, larger than one would expect such a willowy figure to be able to hold. Volfetti adjusted the sack slightly as she used it to push a latchless door open. Wrinkling her nose a bit she walked into the kitchens depositing the sack beside one of the preparation areas for seafood. She whistled sharply to get the attention of a man through the din of the kitchens, gesturing to the sack that was almost overflowing with shellfish. When he came to take care of it she quickly strode out, only to return within minutes with another sack.

This time when she entered an odd movement caught her eye. The source of the movement was a cinnamon roll that had gone flying through the air to land in B'jin's hands. She paused for a moment, was he just relaxing for a moment? No, it didn't seem so. There was no signs of work around him, even Valerian was just staring at the vegetables. Glaring, she strode over to the pair of harpers and swung her bag to the ground, 'accidentally' knocking B'jin's legs sharply.

"Useless sod, you don't deserve that food!" She barked at the rider. Valerian earned barely a glance, he at least appeared to be about to start something useful.

Now Volfetti had two fairly standout weaknesses: cooking and sewing. Things burnt or curdled if she so much as looked at them and seams split with the faintest breeze of wind. But she at least found a better way to use her time, by trading choers and bringing in the food that she would eagerly stay out of the process of cooking. She didn't sit relaxing, taking up precious space and time and stealing food from passing trays!

"Hello!" B'jin chirped cheerfully, grinning impishly in return for the expression on the young bluerider's face as he took in the situation B'jin had settled himself into. Completely unconcerned, B'jin took a delicate bite of his cinnamon roll and arched his own eyebrows, lips pursed together as he chewed though they were attempting fitfully to smirk, creating a highly comical cast of his features.

Swallowing his mouthful, B'jin's smirk was full scale as he winked at Valerian. "In exchange for my most wondrous voice, some art work, and that lady over there," B'jin nodded to one of Katila's eldest women, "She gets paid in kisses." Still grinning, B'jin blew Brisen a very theatrical kiss, which she caught and clasped to her chest just as theatrically, causing B'jin to laugh before he ate the rest of his sweet. The greenrider turned his laughing brown eyes back on Valerian and raised an eyebrow. "Skip out on bartering classes, did you?" B'jin was highly amused. He'd done very little in the way of work that he wasn't actually trained to do as a youngster, and had kept to the trend as soon as he was able to at Katila. Work was for people who were not him!

Speaking of. B'jin's eyes took in the bag that had knocked his legs, and then arched an eyebrow at Volfetti - just in time to get a face full of abuse. Instead of cowing the greenrider, which had probably been the woman's intention, B'jin blinked at her once before bursting into peals of laughter.

"Oh, I assure you I do!" B'jin said cheerfully to Volfetti, sitting up and peering up at her with wide, innocent eyes. "I need to put on weight. Talian said so!" A most blatant lie, even a child could see through, B'jin might as well have said that the sky was made of cheese and coloured green. "See?!" Without waiting for an answer, B'jin tugged his shirt up to show the woman his flat, finely muscled stomach. "Not an ounce of fat! Woe!"

Dropping his shirt, B'jin peered around Volfetti to look at Brisen. "Quick m'lday! Another Cinnamon roll!" B'jin erupted into laughter again as Brisen threw a roll at him and he caught it, and presented it to Volfetti, features taking on an expression of mocking severity. "Will this make me fat?"

Volfetti stood, arms crossed, lips tight and eyebrows raised as B'jin responded to her. She was blatantly unimpressed with his behaviour, only adding fuel to the fire when it came to her opinion of Greenriders. There was joking around and having fun, in one's own time of course, but here B'jin was, taking up other people's valuable time 'putting on weight'. No wide, innocent eyes were going to get by Volfetti, what did he take her for? She had had a hand raising her nieces and nephews, not to mention her own daughter even if K'ren had ripped her prematurely from that. Even her daughter at four could lie better than B'jin was right now.

"Ah yes, the dragonrider has been ordered to put on more weight in the form of fat..." She said, rolling her eyes and turning to Valerian. "I'm sure you'd agree with me in remembering how often they stuffed us full of sweets in preparation for Impression, yes? We had to have at least a roll of fat on our stomach to be let on the sands." She didn't need sarcasm to roll off of her to get her point across and thus it was absent from her voice.

She looked down at her sack of fish, which had spilled some of the slippery bastards when she had dropped it, letting out a small groan. When B'jin spoke again she stared at him as if he were trying to teach her how to fish. "If you shove another few down your gullet maybe it will make you sick." She resisted the temptation to snatch the roll from him, she didn't want to eat it and it couldn't be returned to the trays now that his greasy mits had been all over it.

Pursing her lips she scooped the fish back into the sack and wrapped her hand around the mouth in preparation to lift in. A thought entered her mind and she relaxed her grip for a moment. "You know, if you want to get fat, why don't you follow that woman? I'm sure you're friends with her, crazy just like you and always has food in her hands. Or more aptly, in her mouth. She's rather round, hard to miss her." She advised condescendingly, making somewhat crude and overexaggerated gestures with her free hand around her chest and hips.

Valerian bit back a smirk as he recalled the morning he woke up at B’jin’s and the look of horror on the older man’s face when Veeth and his bonded both expressed interest in food. He wouldn’t mention that morning to Volfetti as he wasn’t in the mood to explain why he had spent the night at B’jin’s hut. Rumours about sleeping with the greenrider were not on his list of things needed to complete his life, thank you very much. Then again, neither was being scolded by Volfetti for interfering with R’nd’s fun. He had no idea if she cared a whit about what the bluerider got up to but they seemed to be on well enough terms and Valerian couldn’t be bothered to deal with any of them dragging him into arguments now or in the future. “Trust me, it’s better to have him eating and being lazy in the corner, putting on weight, than letting him have a hand in preparing anything and poisoning all of us.”

A small pout was given as a vegetable was picked up in one hand and the knife in the other. D’ren or whoever did the assignments must hate him given what he had been stuck with since stepping off the isle. It didn’t help that the man sitting across from him was part of the reason for the punishment when he had numbweed collecting and ended up with swollen and sore wrists. B’jin was a lot of trouble and some days Valerian wondered if friendships were worth the work. As he started hacking at the food everyone in the weyr had better eat and enjoy for the energy he was about to expend, Valerian tossed a quick glance at B’jin, finding himself unable to resist any chance to pick on the man when it came to R’nd. Besides, Volfetti could be a bit scary. He hadn’t talked much with Volfetti in their Candidate classes since she was a cranky pregnant woman but he respected her ability to be outspoken, just as he was starting to respect her lecturing of the spoiled greenrider. “Even if it is R’nd, you should probably attempt being nicer to your lover’s baby’s mama.”

B'jin simply smiled smugly as Volfetti babbled about his explanation as to why he was eating. He didn't expect the woman to believe a word he had said (and probably would have stared at her blankly if she had) but the fact that it had pressed one of her buttons was delightful none the less and satisfied the quirky greenrider.

"Probably not," B'jin returned with an amused smirk. "I'm incredibly difficult to kill." There was a wry taint to B'jin's voice that echoed of past pains, though he lingered on it not as he watched Volfetti smoulder. She was far too much fun. The woman's dig about Par'a simply amused the greenrider, though his eyes flashed briefly once with irritation at the digs. Par'a was closer to him than most people were aware, and he was insanely protective of the quirky woman and her ridiculous dragon. "Par'a?" B'jin asked, his expression awash with mischievous amusement as he let the brief anger vanish like a wisp of steam. "I'll let her know you were asking after her. Prudes are her favo-." B'jin cut off when Valerian threw in his comment, and he quipped a happy: "What he said." As his smirk altered into a sugary sweet smile for a moment. The young bluerider's next comment caused B'jin to turn to him with blinking eyes.

"Why?" It was blatantly honest question, B'jin's brown eyes amused and puzzled as he raised an eyebrow at Valerian. "Firstly, I am being nice. She's the one that came in here flaming like a dragon in Threadfall." Shrugging slightly, B'jin nibbled delicately on the cinnamon bun before continuing. "Secondly, the stronger her disapproval of my attitude, the less likely she is to risk dumping Benden on R'nd for fear of him ending up in my lap - Benden that is - and being influenced by the naughty greenrider that is probably blamed for corrupting the father - though I'd like to point out that he does his fair share of corrupting." A delicate pause and B'jin threw Valerian a sly sideways glance. "It's quite enjoyable!" B'jin's expression was wicked as he raised an eyebrow at Volfetti, the expression both questioning and amused. "Am I right? At any rate, R'nd has enough trouble dodging my two, since I won't shirk my time with them. Add in his own and a DON'T YOU GO NEAR THAT GREENRIDER WITH MY SON!" B'jin altered his voice to be a mocking screech of Volfetti's, causing several sniggers from the other side of the kitchen, "And you have two very sad 'riders on your hands. Sad dragonriders don't make very good daddies."

B'jin smiled sweetly, adjusted his feet once more on the barrel, and caught the new cinnamon roll that Brisen threw his way. He was glad she wasn't one of those cooks that demanded dinner not be spoiled. Of course, that was probably because she worked dessert, not dinner. B'jin licked sugar off his fingers, staring up at Volfetti as he did so, eyes bright with laughter. He was enjoying himself immensely; he hadn't been such a little shit since before the Plauge, before Nemall, and while the habit was alien to most of his audience, it was familiar ground and B'jin found himself slipping back into it with an unholy ease. Larrikith's full bodied support probably didn't help in the slightest to prevent the fall from grace. No wonder D'ren was going grey so early; his perfectly behaved pet was turning feral on him, and he had no way of knowing he was simply seeing the more real greenrider.

Poor, delusional D'ren. Larrikith quipped, stretching lazily where she'd been curled up on the roof in the sunshine, and padding across it to peer down at the courtyard. Valerian was inside. That meant Veeth was around somewhere... Mark-o Polo? Larrikith chuckled to herself. Veeeeth, she purred his name with amused cheek, trotting around the edging of the roof and peering down. Come out, come out, where ever you aaaaare! Laughter was thick in her voice.

"Are you so sure? Aren't dragonriders bred to die?" Volfetti's voice was dark. It was probably not the wisest thing to say and revealed the hatred she had been doing so well to hide. To break a hatred formed over four years and fueled by a mother's fury was perhaps impossible. Especially so when it came to the moral-bound woman that stood before B'jin. She had done her work, caught the food that he would eat in a place she was forced to live against her will. And for what? Him to laze about and scoff sweets with the ability to leave whenever he chose? Of course a Gold could ground a Green, but they would have to catch them to start with to do so.

Valerian's comment irked her. He was defending this slob? To peel a vegetable wasn't hard and didn't all dragonriders have to prepare their lifemate's food once upon a time? She gave him a derisive snort, though he saved himself from a potential ear-lashing with his second comment. A tiny spark of thanks flared in her eyes, though it was shortly overridden with disdain as B'jin continued to speak. His little rant did nothing much to phase her, though she did wince at the awful noise that she supposed was intended to be an impression of herself.

"Oh yes, you're being nice," her voice was sweet and sticky, like a jar of honey. "Nice and lazy. You don't deserve the food others work hard to find and cook." She glared at B'jin, now hoisting the sack of fish up onto her shoulder. "You can be a sad father all you like, your children will probably never know what it means to work for their food. You clearly don't."

With that she turned and strode away. She didn't have the time to deal with the slacking idiot, he had taken up enough of it already. It was no wonder R'nd was all wound up in him, trouble will always find trouble. She had hoped this lover of his would be more sensible, opposites attract and all that. Volfetti was sorely disappointed however and made note to make sure Benden wouldn't be picking up any foul habits from the Greenrider.

Valerian did his best to keep from showing his revulsion over thinking about B’jin in a sexual manner again. The greenrider was doing it on purpose, of that he well knew, but that didn’t mean he could shrug off each comment easily and ignore them all the same. He was a Harper and had a very active imagination that liked to create images out of words and B’jin was doing a wonderful job of assisting him. In the heartbeat it took B’jin to clarify he meant Benden in his lap, Valerian had already conjured up R’nd in B’jin’s lap with clothing being optional. Of course B’jin then dove right into mentioning how R’nd was corrupting the greenrider and how fun it was and it was all he could do to keep from leaving the table, quitting on life. Volfetti didn’t seem too amused by any of the rant either and mentioning R’nd in bed likely wasn’t going to earn favours since it was known exactly how that hook up had happened.

It was odd how he didn’t care one way or the other about R’nd but Valerian had to wonder if his ears were burning from how much he was discussed in rapid fire succession and if Volfetti was going to go lay into him about his parenting skills and who he associated with. Not that Valerian was fool enough to voice that out loud with the stance each side had on the matter. R’nd could fend for himself when the time came; Valerian had a feeling he was about to fall into his own situation that could be sink or swim.

He couldn’t say he was surprised at how Volfetti took the over-the-top theatrics of the older Harper or the way in which she reacted. He was just glad the protective mom didn’t try to fillet him alive for simply sitting with B’jin and partially defending him before chastising him. At the comment about B’jin’s children, his green gaze went from Volfetti to B’jin and Valerian wondered if he should get out of the way or try to play interference. The way B’jin now sat straight and stiff-backed and glared with what could possibly be called murderous intent after Volfetti’s retreating form was a tad scary. Both should have known better than to talk about the other’s children given how much they each loved them. It would serve them both a good dose of common sense to have them verbally duke it out and realise they weren’t that different despite the work ethics when it came to certain chores. Except he knew he couldn’t let that happen since it could get messy, or painful with lashings always looming over head, for both.

“B’jin,” Valerian started carefully after setting down the knife he had almost cut his fingers on during the rants, “ignore her. She’s always that cheerful and your children were born in Katila. They know firsthand what it’s like to have to work for their food and everything else for that matter.” He had yet to meet the kids in question, thanks in part to avoiding the teaching route since coming to Katila, but Valerian wasn’t fool enough to think anyone there had it easy. Even the dragonriders like B’jin and R’nd that made it seem like they had nothing but free time to enjoy however they wanted; he knew they worked as hard as everyone else to build huts, and keep the weyr running as smoothly as it could.

Larrikith! Veeth called back as he bounded over to the side of the building she was peering down at. He had been frolicking around the square, chasing after a few giggling weyrbrats that were cutting through on their way to and from class or chores. Valerian had told him not to leave the square but he was allowed to do as he wanted so long as he didn’t cause too much trouble. He felt he was being very well-behaved and having fun himself but then when Larrikith called to him, his chase was forgotten.

He craned his neck to see her and quietly hoped she would come down to see him since he couldn’t get up to see her. One day he would be able to! For now, he could only practice his exercises and hope he wasn’t the last in class to fly. Charath would never leave him alone if he was. Sitting down primly, he continued to stare up at the pretty green, head tilted as if contemplating something. Valerian’s acting a little weird but he said I’m too big to go inside the kitchen now so I can’t check on him. I think he’ll be okay though. Satisfied with that conclusion, Veeth gave a chirp to properly show his excitement at seeing Larrikith that day. What are you up to today? He knew Larrikith always had wonderful adventures and didn’t doubt today would hold one as well.

B'jin's eyebrows arched slightly, the greenrider almost amused at Vofetti's accusing and snarky comment. Bred to die? "That assumes one is a Weyrbrat." B'jin remarked cheerfully in reply, not quite letting the comment get to him. Threadfall wasn't due until he'd be well into his seventies. He'd still be very much in his dragonrider prime at such an age, though B'jin would admit to himself (though no one else) that the idea of fighting thread terrified him. Life was painful enough, and he didn't have the reassuring touch of numbweed to cure him of his aches. The idea of being Threadscored - which would be so much worse than twenty lashes - was absolutely terrifying.

Before the Harper could get too lost down that rather unsettling train of thought, however, he was interrupted by Volfetti's second attack. He simply gave a breathy laugh of amusement at her dig at him being 'nice and lazy', for he didn't really consider himself lazy at all. Besides, if she'd ever known him before the Plague (before Impression, really) B'jin knew the young woman's opinion would be vastly different. It was her dig at his children that finally irked the greenrider, who's face first lost all semblance of colour, before flushing hotly in vicious anger.

He hadn't realised how viciously he was staring after the woman, practically trembling with pent up fury at such a slur to not only his parenting skills (in which he was quite proud) but the growth of his children themselves. He hadn't laid one word against little Benden! One did not simply kick the dragon because the rider was a bastard! B'jin's lips twisted into a sneer, watching as she stalked off before his attention was claimed by Valerian, the young man's use of his name finally filtering through his outraged thoughts. Irate brown eyes snapped to glare at the younger Harper.

B'jin stared harshly at Valerian for several moments, trying to decide if the weyrling was mocking him, or being honest. After a little while, he slumped back into his seat, kicking his feet angrily back up onto the barrel and accepting an apple without any grace from another kitchen worker. "Stupid bitch."

Larrikith laughed cheerfully at the little blue craning to look up at her, before fluttering her wings out and jumping off the roof to land several feet from him. Folding the sails back, Larrikith stretched her nose out to blow warm beathe on Veeth's face as she gave his cheek a lick. Humans often act weird, Larrikith told the young blue, with all the airs of wisdom she could put into her voice though her eyes were bright with amusement.

Being lazy, she replied cheerfully, and you are growing well, Veeth. You will be a very fine blue.

Valerian wasn’t sure his words had any effect on the greenrider and had even started to worry the fury was going to be turned on him before B’jin seemed to relent. He said nothing on the insult toward Volfetti, not really knowing the woman enough to defend her and likely still wouldn’t even if they were on friendlier terms. B’jin had to vent in some way and despite him swearing and it being a bit shocking to the young bluerider, Valerian didn’t comment on that either. He simply gave a non-committal nod as if agreeing and returned to peeling his vegetables.

After several minutes of silence where Valerian focused intently on his peeling, only nicking a finger once instead of losing it entirely, he dared to speak again, with an entirely different and completely random topic. “Will you show me some basics for drawing? Talian’s office is bare and it needs some gifts but I don’t think stick figures and a scraggly tree count as art,” he had been close to asking about composing music since they shared a love of music but given the way both of their Harper careers had been cut short, Valerian suspected it wasn’t the best conversation turn after the insult against the children.

Veeth could barely contain his excitement when Larrikith came down from her perch to sit with him but gave another little chirp after all when she breathed on him and gave a little lick. He nuzzled his nose to her cheek in return and sat down, looking as regal and pristine as he could as her flattery washed over him. Do you really think so? I want to be the best blue Valerian could ever hope to have. He doesn’t apply himself much but he deserves better than what he often settles with. Veeth loved his human but he was going to have to work on getting Valerian to go after what he wanted a bit more. The quiet young man had plenty of arrogance and he wasn’t lacking in confidence in any area but he just didn’t have the drive to be a star. That was a shame because they both found the stars to be very pretty.

I think Valerian acts the strangest around B’jin. I’m not sure why though. He titled his head quizzically at Larrikith, hoping she had an answer to the unspoken question.

B'jin was crunching on his apple angrily, obviously still quite upset about the slur laid against his children, when Valerian finally found his voice to speak once more. B'jin's gaze flickered over to the young bluerider, studying him for a moment with a slightly vague expression, as if he wasn't quite sure the purpose behind the request.

"There should be some art in there!" B'jin's voice, contrary to his previous statement, was low and sulking while his expression warred between hurt and pouting. "I gave Talian some a few months back..." Of course, some of those were of his friends and their dragons so maybe Talian had opted to keep them in his room or under his bed or... something? B'jin was visibly sulking, but the small smile he offered Valerian was genuine and he nodded slightly, "Of course."

B'jin was generally a patient teacher, relaxed and difficult to rile up; it was why he so often taught the younger children or those that were known to be struggling with one thing or another their letters and other basic skills with the sticks of charcoal. Drawing was his favourite, and while it wasn't technically his field of experience, B'jin was more than confident in his skills and abilities. His work was good and the only reason he hadn't specialised in drawing was because his masters had deemed his voice as better.

Larrikith laughed gently, amused but not mean as she tilted her head to eye Veeth in a teasing manner. Why would I say it, if I didn't believe it? She figured the youngester's question had bene rhetorical, but she felt no reason not to answer it all the same. What other blue could he possibly ever have? Larrikith blinked in surprise, tilting her head. If Veeth had chosen him, than obviously Veeth was the best one for him. Hatchlings! They had the strangest concepts.

Speaking of... Really? How so? Larrikith wasn't going to jump to conclusions until she had something fundamental under her. Her gaze was spiked with curious colours as she watched Veeth with interest.

Normally he said whatever he wanted and didn’t care if he upset or offended anyone but Valerian was finding himself currently in foreign land. Despite his attempt to avoid any topic that might further push B’jin over the edge, he had managed to waltz them right into a tender spot. At least it was sulking and not anger? Valerian shrugged and a moment later hissed as he once more cut himself. Finally giving up, the knife was set aside and the bowl shoved out of his way. “I dunno,” he mumbled as he sucked on the injured digit, wondering as he did so what Talian would say about the latest chore-inspired wounds. Perhaps it was best not to run to him again.

“I think I was there soon after he finished setting up. The room was stark then but maybe he hung your work now.” It was almost funny how he had become such a steady rock for most of his friends, making sure they were fine or staying out of trouble. His teachers would love to know his diplomatic skills had improved, but here with the dragonrider he counted as the first he had a genuine encounter with and was probably also his first friend at Katila – outside of reuniting with Jada – Valerian felt like a bumbling first year student again. Thinking that made him place B’jin as a Master Harper, but he held his tongue. If B’jin hadn’t Impressed, the man very likely would have been one of his teachers at Harper Hall. It was best not to bring up that subject at any time. “So he probably doesn’t need any of my attempts.”

Of course I’m the best blue for him, Veeth straightened his posture and stuck out his chest, proud, but everyone else will know it as well. He already knew Valerian and him were a perfect match but he wanted to be perfect. Valerian didn’t deserve a dragon that screwed up in any area.

Veeth paused at Larrikith’s interest for details. He didn’t want to keep anything from her but didn’t want to betray any secrets either. Finally, he settled on the right answer to satisfy both, He gets disgusted when he thinks about sleeping with B’jin, which he tries not to think about when with B’jin. But we like sleeping with Krypth and Jada, Erisi and even Charath. I don’t know why this is different. I’m sure he’s also fun in bed.

"Don't be silly!" B'jin scoffed, frowning at Valerian's attempt to drop the subject. (Yah, that's your job. Shut it, Larri) "I'd be happy to, and I'm pretty sure Talian would appreciate them, regardless of how many sticks you use." He was teasing now, brown eyes sparkling with amusement as he eyed Valerian sideways, and nibbled lightly on what was left of his apple.

"They won't let you peel any more if you keep cutting yourself," B'jin warned, expression mock serious even as he tossed Valerian a subtle wink. His voice had been loud enough to carry to the other kitchen folk. The greenrider gave Valerian maybe five more minutes before he was either jobless or given a knife-less task. B'jin had been through the kitchen chore enough times to wind up as taste-tester, simply because feeding him meant he wouldn't screw something up. Brown eyes sparkled teasingly.

"How is your little bundle of blue?" He asked, expression genuinely curious. He liked the little blue, and his sweet voice and charming way with words. He especially liked his good manners and the way they bemused the fuck out of Larrikith. Maybe he should start being ridiculously polite, just to screw with her? B'jin considered it for a moment, before tossing the thought away without guilt. Yeah, no. Being obnoxious was far more fun.

Larrikith laughed gently, amused. Very true, just like no one knew how much she and B'jin fought; a façade of perfection that they were both proud of, hiding a core that was so much less so. She had no doubt, in contrast, that Valerian and Veeth were capable of being a perfect dragon pair. The little dragon was completely charming, and Larrikith had rated Valerian Right Up There since she'd met him. He, after all, was amazing. She would have picked him herself, if she could have. Which was a perfectly safe thing to say, since she'd been born a lifetime before him, though she'd not mention it to B'jin. She was never sure how such comments would be taken with him. Usually, though, she knew they sparked fights.

Larrikith couldn't help it; she burst into outright devious laughter that was echoed by a trill of delight as she stared at Veeth in amazed wonder. That was the best statement ever! The green dragon gave the little blue a reassuring nuzzle, to prove she wasn't laughing at him, and licked his cheek. You have an amazing way with words, my dear she crooned, amusement still thick on her voice. He could use a little less manners, but he was definitely a Harper's dragon. Larrikith wondered momentarily if Veeth was any good at singing (or humming along. She enjoyed accompanying B'jin when he played or sang) before letting that thought go for the moment so as that she could answer his unasked questions.

He's just afraid of what he doesn't yet know. Larrikith told Veeth wisely. One day, he will find that 'fun' doesn't even begin to describe B'jin. Larrikith could not wait for that day. The fact that B'jin had been dreading it ever since he'd put one and one together, made it even more amazing. It was lining up to be her best flight yet.

Even if B’jin was just teasing, Valerian kind of liked the comment about how many sticks he would use and started wondering if it would be possible to use literal sticks glued to paper or make a little structure of some sort. It was something to consider for later but for now, he’d just have to accept the help that was given thanks to his own big mouth asking for it. “Then we’ll arrange times for lessons later.” His schedule was pretty routine with classes and chores but Valerian would be nice and let B’jin figure out his own schedule and pick times later on.

“I wouldn’t mind being jobless but I’m not too keen on nicking myself even once more to achieve that goal,” Valerian was close to resting his forehead on the table in defeat. Why did they keep giving him chores that he wasn’t entirely skilled at? Worst of all, they seemed to enjoy attempting to ruin his hands and he rather liked the ability to pluck at his guitar, thank you very much! Thankfully, half way through the actual motion of lying down in defeat, B’jin asked about Veeth and Valerian paused to look up at the man who seemed so curious.

Valerian couldn’t keep the smile from appearing, something he did a bit more of since Veeth entered the picture but he loved his little blue and was always happy to hear others liked him or wanted to know how he was doing. He supposed it was a bit like a proud parent with their brat but he wouldn’t know and hoped to never find out. Teaching was one thing but at least with that he could always go home and get away from the brats and return to silence. “Veeth’s well. Growing at what I’m told is a good rate and he’s curious but not getting into trouble like some of the others are.” He was infinitely pleased at having not Impressed some of the dragonets running around. Even adorable Charath seemed like a handful.

Veeth was a little surprised at the laugh he had earned with his carefully selected words and was about to be insulted and maybe even embarrassed that such a wise and pretty green thought he was foolish when Larrikith gave him the nuzzle of reassurance. That was enough to cause him to relax again and listen to her response carefully. He supposed she had a point. Valerian was still young and learning just like him so it was natural to be a tad afraid of the unknown. Veeth was determined to help his silly human along by always being at his side and encouraging him to try new things. I still find it a little odd that he’d be worried about anything since B’jin’s always nice to us but I’ll help him learn!
