In the few weeks that Ereben had been at High Reaches, he had already made plenty of strides in his new home. His natural curiosity had mentally mapped out all the public tunnels and a few of the more hidden ones. His distrust of men in authority meant that he had ingratiated himself with most of the women in charge, proving himself a helpful addition to the Weyr by setting snares for tunnel snakes and running whatever errands he could.

The only moment of absolute fear came when someone had spotted blood seeping through his shirt from his scars and he had been forced to come clean about it. He thought that he would have been tossed out -- who would want a boy that got whipped? But the Headwoman had hauled him to the healers, who had raised their voices in anger at the injustice and sent him away with a salve to help the scars heal cleaner. And he'd gotten a new shirt too. Well, he had gotten a few of those over the weeks actually. After all, he had come to the Weyr with just a sack of whatever he had stolen from his deadbeat Holdless father, which hadn't been much.

No one had really asked him much about his past and Ereben preferred that. All they cared about was what the dragons thought of him (as a Candidate) and if he was worth his salt (he was).

"Ereben! Get this cup of klah out to that bluerider before he freezes to death, standing in the Weyrbowl like that," one of the women of the Lower Caverns yelled brightly. Ereben liked her. She gave him extra tarts. So he didn't mind being barked that order. Bringing a cup of klah to someone was nothing. Scrubbing all of the pots after dinner was way, way worse.

Youthful balance kept him from spilling a drop as he hurried out to the said bluerider.

R'dare shivered as he shifted from one foot to another as Kadaisicalth curled around him. Considering no one else running around the Weyr seemed to be as cold as he was, R'dare had to assume he had grown weak in the Ista heat and couldn't handle the cold anymore. Not that he ever really could. His brief time in Telgar had been chilly after Katila and he had eagerly jumped at the chance to go to Fort when it opened up. Honestly, Ista had called to him but R'dal had liked the idea of Fort and he wanted to go with his best friend. That changed when Casa became Weyrwoman of Ista and she let him go through the records they had and help with her own studying. He eventually moved there--R'dal had F'drel so R'dare didn't feel too guilty over leaving him--and became Casa's minion or pet bluerider as many whispers referred to him as.

Casa was also the reason he was shivering in High Reaches. He knew she would have gone herself if she was able to but Thallyath could Rise soon and everyone was still extra cautious with golds since the killer wiped out most of the population again. He had been sent because of three days of teasing the Weyrwoman and Thallyath about how he and Kadaisicalth would enter the Flight when it happened. R'dare wasn't surprised he had been asked to run the errand as it would give her some peace for a few hours but it also served well the illusion Casa had created. High Reaches' Weyrleader M'ris was one of the many that still believed Casa was ditzy, immature, and passing all of her responsibilities onto other people. So he played his part by 'accidentally' letting it slip that he had been the one to gather and write the supplies report for trading he was bringing to Weyrwoman Ameris after M'ris dismissed him which earned the expected eyeroll and grumbling from the bronzerider.

But now he was left hanging out in the Bowl as he waited for one or the other leader to call him back to bring their replies to Casa and J'zaq. He didn't dare wander off to visit a friend and risk making the leaders wait or hunt for him so he stood near the entrance to the kitchens in the hopes of leeching some of the heat without getting in the way of the cooks. The pain of a ladle smacking his hand when he was nine and reaching for a sticky bun had stayed with him and he didn't want to cross a kitchen worker again.

R'dare visibly brightened when he saw a younger man dashing in his direction with a steaming mug. He stood a little taller and smiled when the drink was offered to him and the bluerider murmured a thanks as he wrapped his hands around the warm mug and inhaled the cinnamony goodness of the klah. "Has a drink ever smelled so euphoric before?" He questioned aloud before taking a sip and sighing in utter bliss. It didn't matter that he actually burned his tongue as he felt the heat work its way down and through his body. "And the taste!" He nearly moaned from the delight of it all. "Thank you.... sorry, I don't think we've met before. Have we?" He hoped the boy was a new Candidate or lower cavern worker and not someone he had met in the past. The last couple of years were a blur thanks to his dad and sister being victims of the Weyr killer and then living in fear as threatening notes were left for him. It had been months since anything happened, however, and R'dare was slowly starting to feel normal again.

Ereben cocked his head as he watched the dragonrider drink the offered klah. "What's euphoric mean?" he asked bluntly. He hadn't heard that word before but every day there seemed to be another word that he was learning. He was doing a lot of learning. Good for Ereben was that he was quick on his thinking feet, so all of this information being thrown at him didn't feel overwhelming at all. It felt...cool. Like a whole new world opened up to him to explore.

When the dragonrider asked if they had met before, Ereben shook his head. "I'm Ereben," he answered. No rank but honestly that was because he wasn't sure if he should boast about being a Candidate yet or not. "You're a dragonrider? From where? Is this your dragon?" Maybe some of that rapid-fire round of questions seemed obvious but Ereben wasn't going to assume. Learning so much so quickly in the last few weeks had taught him to not assume. His gaze shifted to the blue dragon mantling around his rider, offering shelter from the wind. Of all of the dragons in the Weyr, Ereben had decided that blues were his favorite. They came in the best range of colors and weren't overwhelmingly big like bronzes. And most of them were friendly. Aside from T'ryn, who had been cool, a lot of the bronzeriders that Ereben had encountered so far were stuffy. Typical guy in charge symptoms. Brownriders weren't bad but blueriders had been the best so far.

"Can I touch him?" Ereben asked, looking back at R'dare. There was a "please" written in his eyes when he asked, even if he didn't say it. Still figuring out those manners but at least he wasn't being so blunt. He had figured out that most dragons didn't mind meeting new people but some kept to themselves so best to ask.

R'dare was enjoying the heat seeping into his fingers (You could have put your riding gloves back on) when the first question hit and left him blinking in confusion. Despite all the reading he was able to do now that he worked for Casa, he didn't think he had a fancy vocabulary. Still, it left him embarrassed as he explained. "It means really intense happiness. I may have been a bit over dramatic."

At least that was all he had to be embarrassed about as the younger man gave his name with a shake of his head. Good, this was their first meeting. Or maybe he shouldn't have been so happy given the way it had already started. But it was too late to start over and it didn't seem to matter as Ereben started peppering him with more questions. R'dare laughed and nodded before taking another drink of the klah. "I am, he is, and we're from Ista Weyr. I'm R'dare and this is Kadaisicalth," he tacked on even if he hadn't been asked for names. Ereben had given his and they were having a conversation of sorts so it only seemed right to give out such easily obtained information.

R'dare laughed again as he turned to look at his dragon. "We should ask him. What do you think, Daisi?" He already knew the answer but he wanted to make the point known that dragons had their own minds. Ereben was likely freshly Searched and maybe came from a Hold that still didn't much care for their return and filled his head with all sorts of things, especially if he only had interactions with whers or firelizards.

Kadaisicalth studied the young human for a long moment, still lounging and acting as a wind buffer, silently watching him even as R'dare rolled his eyes at his antics. You may touch me, Ereben. Around the eyes and head knobs are especially nice. R'dare grinned and showed Ereben the two specifically asked for spots. "You're going to spoil him, though. You might get stuck with him like a puppy," R'dare teased as he went back to his drink.

Euphoric. Intense happiness. Was that what he had felt the first time he had ridden a dragon? That seemed to fit the emotion. Ereben added it to his vocabulary but doubted he'd use it ever again. Still, might be useful.

The dragon's name was definitely a mouthful and Ereben took a moment to sound it out quietly to himself to make sure he had it right. Did dragons get to choose their names? And if so, why would they choose something so long? But then R'dare called the dragon Daisi and that confused Ereben. "Wait, he has a nickname?" he asked but the question was quickly swept away as the dragon eyed Ereben and...

Wait.

Wait, wait, wait.

"Did he...did he SPEAK to me?"

There was a squeal, a break in his voice that normally he would have hated because it made him sound younger than he actually was but that's how shocked Ereben was that a sudden voice was heard but not heard with his ears and WOW that was weird but cool!

His request to touch momentarily forgotten, he stood there while a smile slowly split his young face until R'dare showed him where the dragon had meant, and Ereben mechanically moved his hand up to scratch the knobs in question. "This is so cool," he whispered. Because it was! A few weeks ago, Ereben had been running from dragons and now he was living with them, a Candidate for the next Hatching. It was completely unreal but so very cool and he hoped it wasn't a dream because it was the best dream ever and he didn't want to wake up.

The dragon definitely didn't feel like a dream though. Much like Syrendryth, the skin was smooth, not scaly. And Kadaisicalth was smaller than Syrendryth so he was easier to reach but he was still big compared to Ereben. So Ereben, thrilled with the permission granted, spent a moment fully enjoying touching Kadaisicalth before asking, "How do you get stuck with one like a puppy?"

I did just speak to you, Kadaisicalth assured the young man with a low rumbling chuckle. Was the boy always surprised when a dragon spoke to him or was it that uncommon of an occurrence? What type of people and dragons was Ereben hanging out with? Kadaisicalth decided Ereben was simply recently Searched and hadn't had enough time to meet the right dragons and make friends. It was a shame they were in different Weyrs as the boy had already become a top new favourite person in his books with the way he scratched at his head.

And I do have a nickname. R'dare gave it to me early into our life together. He said it's because I bring him joy like flowers do for his mom. I think it's just because he was a lazy weyrling. R'dare rolled his eyes at the teasing but there was a smile on his lips as well. Both statements could be true at once but he didn't need to encourage the blue menace.

"Honestly," R'dare turned his attention back to the Candidate before him, especially now that he had finished his drink and was revelling in the warmth spreading throughout his body, "I think all dragons are like puppies, even the cranky ones. It's just the way the bond is and in the way dragonets need us in the early months." He wasn't quite sure what else to say on it and always hated when someone asked him what Impressing was like and how the bond snapping into place made him feel. It wasn't something easily put into words, but something that had to be experienced to truly understand.

"How long have you been a Candidate? Have you Stood at your first Hatching yet?" R'dare was inclined to believe that the answers were a short time and no given the questions and excitement Ereben had but it was good to confirm. "Are you going to Weyr hop for Hatchings? Weyrwoman Casa and Thallyath Fly next month so if you haven't Impressed in the next few months, you could come down to Ista." Most people seemed to have forgotten or gotten over Thallyath's maiden Flight with blue Faxxonth and the sickly clutch they had four years ago. Still, it was hard not to lightly encourage Candidates to come for his friend's Hatchings all the same. It had been so disheartening to see the small amount that Stood at that Hatching after the terrifying Touching--a group that had only slightly increased at her next one.

Oh, like a flower! The nickname now made sense but definitely wasn't one that Ereben would have given his own dragon. Still, he nodded his understanding and continued nodding as R'dare explained how dragons were like puppies (it still didn't make sense but whatever), just happy to be touching a dragon for such a long time without interruption. While it was becoming a more frequent experience, Ereben hoped that he never got tired of it.

When R'dare started asking questions about Ereben, the youngster cocked his head to the side, giving the bluerider a scrutinizing look for a moment because he was trying to decide how much of his past to tell him. Even though most of High Reaches folk had assured him that no one gave a shit about him being Holdless so long as the dragons approved of him and he did his chores, it was still something that Ereben didn't like to bring up. It was his past and fuck that past. He was here, living in the now.

"Just a few weeks," he answered first. His gaze went back over to Kadaisicalth. He shook his head to the second question but followed it up with, "Soon! I hope." Indeed he did hope and when R'dare mentioned Weyr hopping, Ereben's head tilted to the side again, quizzical. "You can Weyr hop? Like go to other Weyrs for their Hatchings? That's allowed?" Weird that T'ryn hadn't mentioned that but okay. Maybe it was something only certain Weyrs did? There was a lot that Ereben was learning.

"What's Ista like?" he asked, curious to know more about how to greaten his chances at becoming a dragonrider and what other places really were like.

"You can! It's encouraged, actually. The number of Candidates has grown, but each Weyr doesn't really have enough to properly support a Hatching. We like to have a large pool for the hatchlings to find their mates in." He still couldn't decide if he was happy to have Impressed in Katila and avoided the constant moving around or if he felt a bit left out on that adventure. What would it have been like to not know which Weyr he would Impress in? The stress of Impressing in general had been high for him, so it was probably for the best that it played out as it did.

"Ista's hot. So hot," though he supposed he did like it better than freezing and was glad that Casa hadn't been relocated to one of the colder Weyrs since he knew he would follow and continue assisting her. "It's humid and hot year round so people wear very little and try to stay cool and do a minimum amount of work during the day. The Weyr is a lot smaller than here as well." R'dare could have given specifics and gone into ranking the Weyrs by size or population thanks to all the reading he had done, but he didn't think Ereben would be as interested. Most of his friends weren't as into history and such statistics as he was so he had learned to prune it down and give quick and interesting facts which seemed to be a lot more appreciated.

"Anyway, I can't remember right now which Weyr has a Hatching next but if you're interested in going, you usually have to be there a month before so you can learn what that Weyr expects of Candidates and of course, be ready for the Touching." At this, Kadaisicalth perked up and gave a little trill of excitement. Touchings are fun! R'dare chuckled and patted his dragon's neck. "Like you remember it!" Well, no. But I can see your memories and you enjoyed yourself.

R'dare rolled his eyes but was still smiling fondly at the blue. "True enough, but," he turned his attention back to Ereben, "they can be a little scary as well. It depends on the dragonet's mood. Sometimes they don't like to be disturbed and will send you a scary image or memory, but usually they're just curious and friendly."

So, wait, Ereben really could go to other Weyrs to get a dragon! "How many Hatchings are there?" he blurted out, thinking that maybe there were a lot more Hatchings than he had been led to believe by gossip. He'd had a dragon in no time if that was the case!

As R'dare described Ista, Ereben's nose wrinkled but he said, "Doesn't sound so bad. Might be better than constant snow and blizzards. We only get a little bit of summer up here and even then it never gets that hot." Not hot enough for people to stop working like R'dare said they did down in Ista. It got hot enough to enjoy eating outdoors, throw some Gathers, things that didn't really interest Ereben but seemed to interest a lot of others.

"So I'd have to be at the other Weyr for a month or this Weyr?" Because he had already been at High Reaches for more than a month and knew it pretty well. He didn't apologize for asking so many questions either. Ereben was naturally curious and had discovered that the best way to find out what he needed to know in this new environment was to ask questions. Here, no one beat him for that. They expected him to ask. He liked that.

But then, Ereben stilled. "Wait, Touchings are scary? I thought Hatchings were scary!" he said. "Why does it matter what mood the egg is in? They talk to you like Kadaisicalth does?" This was new information to him! He thought that dragons didn't do any talking until they had hatched. But it didn't seem like it was talking like a real dragon, not from what R'dare said.

"But he doesn't remember talking to you?" Ereben asked, confused by what R'dare said about Kadaisicalth not remembering. Were dragons really that forgetful? He had heard that they were but it was still a weird concept to him. How did you just...forget what you did the day before?

"You don't have to travel to the other Weyrs if you're set on staying at a specific one. but yeah, they seem to prefer having you there a month before the Hatching. If you've been to several at that Weyr already, then you can sometimes get away with arriving a week before the Touching depending on the Weyr. He knew Fort still did the full month but he wasn't sure about Benden or Igen's stances yet with their new leaderships in place. He'd have to look into that and verify with A'dis while he was here to see if M'ris and Ameris kept to their old policies.

He was going to offer to show Ereben around the three Weyrs he had lived in over the years when it seemed like his casual comments about how Touchings could go sank in. "Crap, sorry, I didn't mean to panic you about them!" He forgot how new the Candidate was and that Ereben probably hadn't heard much about Touchings in general. R'dare plopped himself down on Kadaisicalth's tail--an always convenient seat. "Pull up some tail or a paw. You'll be light to Daisi, so don't worry about hurting him."

He took another moment to organise how best to explain the drama that could be Touchings and then dove in. "Touchings are all in your mind. You can't get physically hurt unless you trip and fall. But sometimes they slip into your memories you'd rather forget and definitely don't want to relive so it can be horrific in the moment. You just have to remember it's not real and removing your hand from the shell will break the link and you can compose yourself." He was so thankful to have already Impressed. R'dare wasn't sure he would continue to Stand after the murders of his dad and sister if he hadn't. The risk of going through that pain again because of a curious or cranky hatchling was too high and not worth it. Well, knowing what he knew now and the love he and Kadaisicalth had for each other, maybe he would have the strength, but luckily, he would never have to find out.

"Usually, you're shown happier memories or left in a peaceful state because the dragonet was curious about a certain emotion or an activity you were thinking about. So you can kind of sway them with surface thoughts. And that's how they speak to you; just images and prompting an emotion in you. I'm not sure about why they forget the Touching. Maybe it's like they're sleeping and we're just a flitter of a dream to them."
