As Ch'es and Pardrith had to partake in mind speak early on, the pair had grown quite accustomed to the practice and were far ahead of their classmates who were just learning how to do so. The pair had begun practicing even during class time when they were waiting their turn for lessons, trading teasing back and forth in silence. Only when Pardrith would burst out into boisterous laughter or one of the elders would listen too closely would they be found out.

While the two excelled in that field, one they failed at miserably was finding time away from each other. Mainly because they enjoyed each other's company far more than others. Ch'es was far from a social butterfly anyway, and Pardrith had grown quite used to acting as his voice. So when the pair were saddled with homework that involved their separation, it was those around them who suffered.

Pardrith took to snapping irritably at his siblings who tried to play while Ch'es continued to struggle to integrate with his classmates. It wasn't that the boy didn't know how to forge lasting friendships or bonds. He just tended to be slower and more cautious about it. Solitude remained a solid preference, which didn't necessarily fulfill the goal of the lesson. And maybe he'd begun to rely a bit too heavily on Pardrith's ability to speak for him.

With yet another afternoon spent away from his dragon, Ch'es found himself at a loss and longing to seek out wherever Pardrith had been led for some training of his own. The boy reached out through their bond and found comfort in Pard's continued presence even if he was too far to communicate fully with. It was enough for the dragonet to know he was missed.

With the task of 'socializing' determined to be too difficult, Ch'es instead opted to throw himself into the typical exercise routine. No one would really question why a weyrling was jogging so long as he avoided his specific instructor for the day. Though he supposed it couldn't be called jogging either when he ran full tilt with the entire goal of tiring and ridding himself of pent-up stress and energy from the separation from Pard. If anyone wanted him to stop, they'd simply have to catch him first. Even when the boy's chest burned from his recent foray with poisoning, Ch'es didn't stop or slow down.

Once upon a time L'ri had considered himself to be in excellent physical condition. He could repeat a swordfight over and over again for hours until a student or actor finally caught on, could dance the literal night away despite having his thirties, and had even survived the marathon that Mylorah and Yfris thrown him into. But no. For some reason, that wasn't enough.

He had to run, and despite everything else he could do, running just left him wheezing and wondering why it was important at all. He had a horse! He had a dragon! Couldn't they just let him dance with Mylorah for his exercise regimen? If she couldn't because of sensitive baby dragon sensibilities he could dance with Z'kel and put on a good enough show and get a work out in he bet if the lordling was as good a dancer as Mylorah seemed to think.

I don't think complaining is really helping at all. Of course the Maestro would only pick up on the thoughts he wasn't trying to send on purpose. Unbothered by his rider's lack of proper response, Oncaeth continued, Is the ground comfortable? I think they'll still make you finish your run. L'ri huffed as he tried to catch his breath and stared up at the sky, remembering again why he'd been reminiscing about a time when he was considered in shape.

With a slightly annoyed tone added to his voice the bronze added, Someone is coming. You should get up and get it over with so we can do fun things. "Easy... easy for you to say," L'ri grumbled. Maybe whoever was coming would just put him out of his misery while his bronze lazily stared at him from his little lookout perch almost halfway across the bowl.

Eventually he could hear the footfalls, and then there was a face that came into view, though it wasn't one that L'ri had been expecting. He blinked up at the young man. "Oh, hello there. How... how are you, Ch'es?" He wheezed a bit and gave the lad a tired wave. He could practically feel Oncaeth rolling his eyes at him despite the distance. "No... no translator today? Be a good lad and just put... put me out of my misery." He's joking, the bronze said to Ch'es with a bit of exasperation in his raspy voice.

Maybe another could simply continue on when they saw someone sprawled out on the ground looking in need of assistance, but Ch'es sadly could not. Apparently, his need to help others was going to get him the socialization he so wanted to avoid after all. The freckled boy slowed his pace as he came upon the prone L'ri until he was running in place. He worked himself down in stages, slowing his run bit by bit until he was standing still instead of going straight from fast to nothing at all.

The boy shook his head, both in answer to L'ri and in exasperation. Running wasn't that bad. Though he was smaller, Ch'es didn't hesitate to reach a hand down to help the older man to his feet. Planting his weight, Ch'es leaned back as he pulled until his classmate was up again.

Do you need water? the mute wondered, automatically looking around to see if he could spot Pard's brother to help translate. Stupid question, he realized. Ch'es held out his hand, palm facing L'ri, in the universally recognized 'wait' or 'stop' gesture. Not giving the man time to protest, Ch'es took off again and returned with a waterskin fetched from an attendant.

The boy held it out and swiped his hand across his sweat-soaked forehead once it was free. Though he could certainly run quite a few more laps, the heat was already promising to worsen as the sun rose higher in the sky. A swim would be a welcome trip instead, but Pardrith would be upset with him going without him. It was the dark bronze's favorite activity for sure.

You don't have to go without me! his bonded piped up, his voice loud enough to echo across the bowl. Ch'es looked up to spot his dragon galloping their way with his head held high.

Did your lesson go well? Ch'es asked, already knowing it must have based on the way Pardrith's excitement practically thrummed through him.

Of course! And you are even socializing. We are both doing well.

Ch'es didn't correct the young dragon at all.

Oncaeth, let's go swimming! Drag your limp rag of a rider along before he collapses.

Pard... Ch'es began in warning.

Oh, I'm just teasing, the hatchling grumbled. Eager to get going, the young bronze nudged his boy towards the lake before sliding his gaze over to L'ri. You're coming, aren't you?

L'ri grumbled as he was pulled up to his feet, though he at least didn't petulantly leave himself a limp rag on the ground to make the boy struggle. As soon as Ch'es brought the waterskin he held up a hand and shook his head. "No, no water. Only a fine wine and perhaps the sweet release of death." The bronze let out a heavy sigh and in a very weary voice said, He's joking. Again.

Feeling his little Maestro's irritation, L'ri rolled his eyes and took the water for a sip. "Don't mind the Maestro. He's annoyed with me." He followed the boy's gaze and spotted the darker bronze running their way. Oncaeth stood up and stretched before trotting on over after his brother. Let's go, L'ri! We're going swimming! It's still exercise so it should count. He didn't bother to correct Pardrith, especially since his rider was being quite the pain.

With his own weary sigh, purely for dramatic effect since swimming really did sound much better than running, L'ri followed along. "I'm coming, I'm coming. Limp rag and all," he said followed by a good natured chuckle. He followed along to the lake before peeling off his shirt over his head and tossing it off to the side. It was soon accompanied by the rest of his clothes, leaving him naked before he started to wade into the lake.

Oncaeth bumped into him from behind, giving him a firm nudge further in before he started to swim and splash around too before he went to go pounce on his darker brother playfully. "Hey now. Keep the rough housing to the shallows and remember not to pin each other under water." Oncaeth gave him a look, even as he climbed off of his brother and swam off looking every bit like the slightly sulky killing machine L'ri knew he could be. I wasn't going to try and push him under for long. "I know you're good at holding your breath and swimming, but not everyone is so you should be polite about it is all. You can go back to playing and wrestling, just try to be sensible about it."

With a huff Oncaeth relented and then went to give his brother another pounce before retreating to a more shallow stretch.

Ch'es's lips twitched with amusement as L'ri's dragonet felt the need to let him know the man was joking. He didn't break it to Oncaeth that he could tell by the overly dramatic way the man groused. Still, he was glad his classmate actually drank some water. He certainly looked rough for wear. He supposed he hadn't realized how much exercise others weren't used to doing until he saw how many of his classmates struggled with the physical demands of it. Maybe it was just because they were older. And some had been in positions of nobility before Impressing, hadn't they? When he thought on it, he guessed they weren't the kind of people to go tromping around the woods for hours at a time hunting for their dinner.

With Pardrith leading the way to his favorite place, Ch'es took up the rear if only to ensure L'ri didn't simply collapse on the way from sheer exhaustion. When they reached the lake edge and the older man began to strip, Ch'es quickly averted his eyes and felt his face flush with heat. The youth still had yet to grow accustomed to nudity as many of the others were, going so far as to wait until there were as few people in the baths as possible. He mourned the more private baths Sironar had access to.

Ch'es was more than grateful when the dragon siblings began to roughhouse in the water, drawing L'ri's attention like he were a chiding father. During the distraction, Ch'es stripped his own clothes and rushed into the lake.

Pardrith huffed at the implied insult. I am an excellent swimmer! he boasted with annoyance, already looking for how best to get his brother back even as Oncaeth slinked back towards the shallows obediently. Narrowing his eyes, the dark bronze slipped under the equally dark water's surface and rushed underneath to tangle in his brother's legs. Planting his feet on the sandy bottom, Pardrith tossed his brother up and over his back before bouncing along the edges of the lake in clear enticement for more play.

Amused by their antics, Ch'es swam in easy, relaxed circles, letting the water cool his heated muscles. He'd gained weight, he realized, since coming to the Weyr. Before, he'd been wiry muscles built over a too-thin frame. Now, he was better balanced and certainly more routinely fed.

He glanced over at L'ri as he swam, making sure the older man's muscles didn't lock up from the change in temperature. He'd heard of drownings from similar behavior before when even strong people found themselves suddenly unable to tread water and succumbed to the water. His discerning eye noted no such distress from his classmate, so he resumed his own aquatic exercise while their dragons played.

L'ri couldn't help but chuckle as the little bronze talked about how good of a swimmer he was. "I'm sure you are. Oncaeth certainly is, so it's nice that you have that in common. But I don't want to have to worry too much about you while I swim." At least the dragons were playing in the shallows. Oncaeth took his tipping with awkward squawking flails before shaking himself and chasing after his brother to wrestle and play a bit more.

Satisfied there would be no terrible drownings on his watch, L'ri settled into swimming, easy and confident, and having a much better time than he'd had with all the running. In fact he was feeling much better than his prior winded and overly hot self had felt. Better enough that he decided to comment on the bit of discomfort and unease that Ch'es seemed to display when he'd stripped. "You know, there's nothing wrong with nudity. In fact it's rather common in the Weyrs you know."

A different thought popped into his head, though he had no idea if it was valid or not since he hadn't even glanced the young man's way when he'd stripped. "Oh and if you're embarrassed or trying to draw any comparisons, don't worry about it. Everyone is different and there is no need to feel ashamed of anything."

While the brothers played, Ch’es contemplated drowning. At the very least, he ducked his head under the water for a moment as if the cooler temperatures could chase away the heat in his face. It had become more than clear to him that nudity was different in Weyrs than in the Holds. That held even more true for Ch’es who had spent the majority of his time away from any society, low or otherwise. Getting used to it was a painful lesson of exposure for the freckled teen. He’d managed fine with Sironar, but they were close friends. It seemed different!

I’m not drawing comparisons! Even the suggestion that he’d been looking had him turning away and hiding his face in his hands. His cheeks burned as if roasted by the sun! Pardrith translated between growls as he traded pounces with Oncaeth.

He lived alone in the woods, the dragonet added. It’s a different way of living than here. And it was part of why he’d chosen him! Ch’es had a different perspective than others. He knew how to survive tough odds and make it on his own. Not many had that strength. Pardrith had learned that humans were meant to be social creatures. His boy just needed a bit more help in that regard.

Wanting some distance now as if he could pull away from the conversation altogether, Ch’es swam out to deeper water where the depths cooled the water even more. With how hot his face felt from embarrassment, a bucket of ice would serve him better.

"Well if you lived alone in the woods I imagine you really didn't have much to compare to. But that's fine, I'm sure you'll see a lot more while you're here. Just remember, there's no shame in how a man's equipped. It's all about how you play the instrument you're handed." L'ri paused to chuckle before adding, "In more ways than one. Sometimes how you play someone else's instrument will make or break a duet." He swam for a bit more, glancing over to see that Ch'es was possibly trying to drown himself.

Waiting for the boy to surface again, L'ri added in a more serious tone, "Really, if you were able to live on your own for so long, you must be sturdy and adaptable. This is just another thing to adapt to. I'm sure you'll do fine. Unless you think dicks and pussy are scarier than boars, which... well I suppose they can be depending on the situation. Anyway, you can make it I'm sure. And if you want you can try to ask me some sort of embarrassing thing if it'll help set you at ease."

L'ri lazily rolled onto his back to float on top of the water, feet lazily kicking to propel him and hands swirling to steer him in loose circles so that he didn't drift too far away.

He could just sink to the bottom of the lake and not resurface. It was a serious consideration as L'ri continued talking about his manhood and other peoples' manhood and other peoples' anything and did he ever stop?!

He's not partial to any instruments. The dragonet frowned. That's not true. You like music, Ch'es. Ch'es wondered if he'd gone and jumped into the volcano with how hot his entire face felt with embarrassment. He was not explaining this to his dragonet! He didn't even want to understand what L'ri was talking about. It was only through context clues that he even could guess. Orphaned at an early age, the boy hadn't been exposed to sex even in a broad sense as Holdfolk typically were. His only comparisons were from seeing animals in the forests surrounding Lemos, and he'd certainly never felt any stirrings that made him interested in mocking them with his own kind.

Miserable at the continued conversation, the boy managed to muster up the courage to ask L'ri since he was offering. Ch'es had kept his preferences, or lack thereof, close to his chest whenever discussions came up about it. Since most of his other classmates were eager, he'd thus far remained under the radar in that regard.

What if I don't want to do any of those things? he asked.

What things? Pardrith asked, speaking to Ch'es alone. When the freckled hunter requested the dragonet simply translate, the dark bronze huffed with annoyance but did as he was asked. Since he couldn't satisfy his curiosity, he took out his frustration on Oncaeth with another pounce.

What if they are scarier than any boar or wherry or feline?

Sensing his boy's unease, Pardrith paused in his play and looked seriously at Ch'es. I'll protect you from anything scary, the dragonet promised. Ch'es smiled fondly. Silly dragon.

L'ri just smiled as he continued to swim and float. "Not partial to any instruments eh? Perhaps he's just not found the right one? I have a younger brother, and for a while I thought he might not be partial to any particular instrument... but with how he started to act as he got older I started to think that maybe he was just ashamed of the instruments he was interested in. It might not be a particularly popular view to think that it doesn't matter what instrument you prefer, and some orchestras can be quite demanding in what instrument they think you should play, but... I'm not that sort of conductor I suppose. I believe music should be written from the soul."

Oncaeth huffed, annoyed that his rider was taking such a long time to talk about silly things like orchestras. You're rambling. "Ah, I suppose you're right, I am rambling a bit. Anyway I won't judge you over your instruments." Oncaeth took the opportunity to pounce upon Pardrith before bouncing away in glee. As he got an actual question from the boy, L'ri paused to tilt his head just enough to get a better look at Ch'es. "Oh?"

He considered the question and shrugged. "I think it's a quite fun activity and worry you might be missing out, but I suppose if you don't want to just politely decline. You're not in the position to be married off as part of a political move, so no spouse to oblige yourself to. Though..." L'ri's voice trailed off a bit as he studied the bronze dragons as they frolicked. "You may have a different thing to consider once they're a bit older. I think there's a class about it if my memory serves correctly. I couldn't help but try to find a lesson plan for the weyrlings. For now don't think about it too much. It would probably cause more grief than it's worth and people change over time, who knows, maybe you will find an instrument that catches your interest by then and your worries won't matter."

L'ri resumed swimming at that, before adding, "Oh and remember, just because you see an instrument doesn't mean it needs to be played. Sometimes instruments just happen. Like for swims."

The analogy had made sense in the beginning, but Oncaeth had it right. L'ri was rambling, and Ch'es was struggling to keep up. The boy had little sense for a turn of phrase, and the deeper this one went, the deeper his frown grew.

At least the man's response to his question was more pointed. If I decline, no one will be upset? he asked, giving voice to some of his concerns - through Pardrith, of course. When L'ri continued and spoke about when their dragons would be old enough to partake, he brought to light yet another concern. What if Ch'es wasn't ready? What if he was never ready? What if he never wanted to be ready? What if Pard got upset with him about it?

Though his dragonet couldn't exactly follow his boy's worries, he was confident in his reply. You're mine. I won't force you to do something you're not ready to do.

You can't know that.

Pardrith snapped at his brother as he bounded away and out of reach. I do.

At the very least, it made the freckled boy feel marginally better. Which, in turn, had the dark bronze lifting his head with pride.

I don't want to play with any instruments!

Pard shouted it to match his boy's frustration and to be heard over his splashing as he gave chase to Oncaeth again. Growing weary of playing in the shallows as L'ri had bid them, the dark bronze plunged into deeper waters to swim towards his boy who was stubbornly treading water.

But maybe L'ri was right and it wouldn't matter by the time Pard was grown. Still, Ch'es wasn't nearly as tactile as most of his classmates were. He'd seen others and how they stuck close together, cuddling as if they were bonded pairs - or more. He understood when it came to cuddling with fire lizards, dragons, and horses. But when it came to people? Ch'es was far more frugal with his affection.

"Oh I can't say that no one will be upset. People get upset for the silliest things and some people just don't take rejection well. It's good to be considerate of others, but if you live life worrying about upsetting other people, then you'll only hurt yourself and set yourself in the end. You have to find a balance." L'ri turned a lazy eye over at Oncaeth, watching him as he very slowly started to play in progressively deeper water. Still technically the shallows, but he knew they were probably going to keep pushing.

The sudden objection to any instruments made him laugh. "Then don't play them. You'll have friends and acquaintances who will try to convince you otherwise on occasion, but ultimately it's your decision." Another glance at the dragons had him adding, "At least most of the time. But those are perhaps topics for another time."

Slowly and casually he floated towards Ch'es, his kicks lazy and his arms only casually skimming along the surface. Once he was close enough though he reached over and splashed the boy, sending a spray of water at his face. "Anyway, you could still learn to loosen up a tad. Try to have some fun while you can." He gave another slow kick to try and move further away from any retaliatory strikes only to suddenly have Oncaeth explode out of the watery depths with a roar as he tried to pounce his brother.

"MAESTRO!" L'ri coughed and sputtered as the sudden assault left him flailing with water in his mouth for a moment before laughing and shaking his head.

It was...strangely sage advice, and Ch'es felt better for it. He realized he perhaps worried a bit too much about what others thought or how they felt. L'ri was right; he did need to find a balance. But where, exactly, did one draw the line?

The boy's thoughts were drawn away from the topic as he spotted the older man swimming closer. Suspicious, he narrowed his eyes and drew slowly away. Since his classmate's approach seemed innocent enough, the boy didn't lunge immediately away when he was within arm's length of him. His mistake! He should have known it was a ruse. Ch'es swiped water from his face as he fought back a smile. That smile broke out free in full when Oncaeth's ambush swamped L'ri with a huge wave.

Of one mind, both boy and dragonet dove beneath the dark waters. As Pardrith sped by, Ch'es grabbed hold of his tail and a trail of bubbles rose up behind him as the boy laughed under the water at how he was towed. While Pardrith kept swimming below the surface, Ch'es had to break away to catch his breath. Much to no one's surprise except perhaps Oncaeth's, the dark sibling burst out of the water and spread his wings in a ridiculous display before flopping across his brother's back like a fish.

Oncaeth let out a fearsome roar, wings flaring as he whipped around, seizing onto his brother to drag him right back down under the water with him. L'ri hacked out a few more coughs to clear the last bit of spray from his lungs before swimming further away from the thrashing and churning water. "Well, at least they're both good swimmers. Just hope the Maestro doesn't get too carried away. I think he sometimes he forgets his own strength."

Except he didn't really think, he just knew in a way that still boggled his mind sometimes. Like he knew how Oncaeth was making sure to hold back a bit on his bites and claws, was more batting and gently chewing on his brother beneath the surface of the lake while using exaggerated movements to give Pardrith plenty of opportunity to escape or turn the tides. Maybe all those talks about improvisational stage combat had something to do with it.

There was another churn and great big splash of water and L'ri swam further out of the way. "Whelp. Are we swimming more or shall we head back to dry land and find some other entertainment before those two go overboard?"

The brothers were well matched in their brawling, and Ch'es was thankful they were in the lake where no one was at risk of walking by at the wrong moment and getting trampled or knocked down by their boisterous behavior. Watching the dragonets play reminded him of watching pups interact in Lemos. They learned their social skills from each other. Bites that were too rough resulted in the loss of a playmate or a cessation of playtime. The same was true for the dragons. Just as Oncaeth measured his bites, Pardrith did the same.

Aren't you supposed to be exercising? Pardrith pointed out in Ch'es's stead. The boy snorted, water bubbling up just beneath his nose as he continued to tread water away from L'ri. After the man's splashing, he was definitely suspect of any further shenanigans.

Treading closer to the lake edge, Ch'es felt something odd with his toes. Curious, he dove down to fetch it and returned with a heart-shaped stone. He held it aloft for L'ri to see before tossing it deeper into the lake. With a grin, the boy dove again with every intention of fetching it. On his own, Ch'es had to invent his own games to entertain himself, and diving for treasures was an easy one that didn't require a partner but could be played with others. When he returned to the surface with it again, he gave it another throw and looked to L'ri expectantly. No one said they couldn't combine games with exercise!
