Even though she chatted with Z’kel daily, they hadn’t really talked. It was like they had silently agreed not to mention that the second son of Tillek Hold was now a greenrider with a baby dragon to care for. It was just a simple fact of life that now existed and didn’t need to be pointed out. They were both great at ignoring awful truths and big changes until the last possible moment and Mylorah knew that it was time to deal with the green truth of the matter. It was hard not to after Lord Tillek got his visit in. She had made herself scarce since seeing her would probably only further upset the man. But maybe she could have been a focal point for any anger he had. Now she wished she had stayed within sight.

But it was too late to change that part of the day so she focused on what was left of it and led Amagrith from the feeding buckets to where Z’kel and Seravath were sitting alone. A fond smile appeared as Mylorah took a minute to simply watch her lordling. He was still as handsome and captivating as the first time she spotted him on the edge of the dance square at a gathering. She also knew in that moment that she would still do anything in her power to see him smile and that he was happy.

With a bounce in her step and a chubby dragonet prancing beside her, Mylorah continued her approach with a cheerful greeting. “Good evening, Sir Tazicurls and to his beautiful companion Lady Seravath as well!” Even with a bucket of oil and a rag in her hands, and lacking the proper attire, Mylorah gave her best sweeping bow to the pair. Amagrith’s eyes whirled with delight and did her own version of a bow as well, seeing it as a fun game. “May we join you?”

Blonde and wavy, Tazikel wears his hair so that it ends a little past his ears. Due to the wave, it's a bit longer when damp. He's at that age where he can finally sorta grow a beard but it never really gets anywhere, so he keeps it fairly stubbly so it looks very intentional (even if he can't grow a proper beard).

Really, it was impressive the Weyr had managed to keep his father away for ten days. Z’kel had been half expecting his father to storm Telgar as soon as he’d heard about Z’kel’s Impression the day of, but it hadn’t happened. He’d been waiting for the storm to break ever since, and that day it finally had.

The conversation hadn’t even been that bad, as stressful as it had been. Lord Tillek had been resigned more than anything else. He hadn’t yelled. He’d even said he’d been expecting to lose his son to the Weyrs for Turns now, what with how often he visited and spent time with Mylorah, so it wasn’t even so much of a surprise to him that it had finally happened.

It was, however, very clear that Lord Tillek wasn’t sure how to feel about Seravath. Z’kel knew it, he could tell from the way his father talked around her, the way he looked at her, the complete refusal to acknowledge her color. The way he’d said “your mother is concerned about your safety” conveyed a lot.

But he hadn’t been angry, he’d reassured Z’kel—he’d still called him Tazikel and Tazi almost exclusively, but Z’kel still called himself that half the time so he’d hardly hold it against his father—that he’d always be welcome home in Tillek, and Tazi had not cried about it, and he’d even gotten an awkward pat on the shoulder before his father left with his bronzerider escort. He’d been given the warnings about being too touchy by the Weyrlingmaster, and didn’t try to hug him.

Z’kel was pretty sure he really would have cried if he had, so the awkward shoulder pat was welcome.

Now that he was gone, though, Z’kel wanted to scream a little bit. Possibly throw something really hard. Seravath, who was utterly perfect, found herself a good sized stick and asked him to throw it for her to play with. It wasn’t quite the same as throwing something so hard at a wall it broke, but it scratched some of the same itch and Z’kel was content to sit off at the edge of the weyrling area and play fetch with Seravath until his arm got tired and she got bored of chasing the stick and moved on to sitting at his feet and gnawing at it.

Mylo had told him about Impression, as something she’d one day experience and not him, and about being bonded to a dragon, but it was impossible to really describe how immediately he’d fallen in love with his little dragon. Seravath was amazing; it had only been a week and Z’kel was pretty sure he’d kill someone for her.

Which was why the thing about his father’s visit that rankled the most was the way he seemed to blame Seravath for–for stealing his son’s future, was the best way Z’kel could describe it. And she hadn’t done that, she’d given him a new one and Tazi was happy to have it, his father just couldn’t see it because her hide was green. Lord Tillek knew far less about dragons and weyrlife than his second son, but he’d still heard plenty of talk about greens.

Talk Z’kel had very determinedly not been thinking about himself because he loved Seravath and never wanted to think ill of her but boy had Z’kel heard some things—both Holder rumor and actually facts from Mylorah—that made his heart beat faster with anxiety. And of course, his father’s visit had very thoroughly smashed through the little mental wall he’d built up to keep from thinking about all of these things.

Thanks, Dad.

Seravath looked up, the sudden movement drawing Tazi out of his spiraling thoughts.

Amagrith and Mylorah are coming over, she said, and Z’kel turned in time to see Mylorah and her gold dragonet stop a few feet away to greet them. He couldn’t help but smile a little at Mylo’s dramatic bow, and the smile got a bit bigger when Amagrith copied her bonded. Even cuter was how Seravath got up, gave Amagrith a clumsy bow of her own, and offered the bigger dragonet her well chewed stick.

“Ladies,” Z’kel said, trying to keep himself from laughing out loud at the antics, and gestured to the space next to him for Mylorah to take.

Amagrith eyed the stick for a long moment and then decided it was a worthy offering. She chirped her approval and flopped down beside Seravath to begin gnawing on the stick as Mylorah took the invitation to sit beside her knight. She hoped he was still her knight. They were both adjusting to new lives and even if they both belonged to the Weyr now, maybe Z'kel was playing nice until he had his own weyr and wasn't trapped with her day in and out. He Impressed because he came to watch her latest attempt so maybe he blamed her like she was sure Lord Tillek and most of that upper society would.

But she was still too afraid to ask that question and put it away to ignore a while longer. It really was easy enough to do when she was with Tazikel and she gave him a kiss to the cheek in greeting after setting the bucket down on her other side. Amagrith seemed to accept the greeting kiss as normal behavior for her and never caused a fuss. Having so much time to just think and chat with her dragon, it seemed her overly affectionate behavior with nearly everyone she knew set Amagrith's tolerance for such things a little higher than a lot of her clutchmates. Mylorah still didn't dare risk more than casual kisses or hand holding, however, and she worked hard at keeping her thoughts platonic, especially where some of her classmates were concerned--especially this one.

"How is Lord Tillek?" She didn't want to talk about feelings but pretending Z'kel didn't have a visitor earlier seemed silly, even for them. "Did he mention everyone else? I hope Itherida is well." She genuinely liked the woman and had always felt sorry for her being married to the boring brother and now she didn't have the sexy brother to entertain her.

His check felt tingly where Mylorah kissed it, surely a side effect of his reduced physical contact in the past week. Seravath didn’t seem to care—she was far more focused on Amagrith’s acceptance of the stick and trying to see if her sister would share and let her chew on the other end or if she’d given up her rights to the stick entirely. Z’kel took the indifferent response as permission to lean just slightly against Mylorah. Nothing untoward—not by Weyr standards, at least, but had she been an unwed, unrelated woman it would be untoward enough in the Holds—just enough to know he was touching another person. Grounding. Z’kel needed it after his father’s visit.

“Oh, you know, little disappointed, but uh, I think he’ll be okay,” Z’kel said, trying to keep his voice light. “He only mentioned my mother. She’s apparently worried about me, but she always worries.” Which was true, but she was almost certainly more worried than usual. And about different things. Who could say what his mother had heard about greenriders, but chances were very low it was anything good. Tazi really didn’t want to think about the sorts of things his mother might be imagining happening to him, so he continued to the rest of Mylorah’s question.

“He didn’t mention anyone else specifically, just that they all send their love and well wishes or whatever. Theri’s probably okay, one of her younger sisters is being fostered with us—er, in Tillek—for a bit, so she has an extra friend around, at least. I’ll send most of them letters in a bit for more details, but I’m not sure I can write that many letters yet. I’m not even sure the Weyrlingmaster would let someone bring me that much paper if I asked.” Z’kel laughed, because the idea of asking V’ra for paper to write letters to his family was hilarious. V’lia would probably help, though, but maybe not for another week or two. And again, Z’kel didn’t think he was up to writing that many letters anyway.

At least Batenkel wouldn’t be expecting a letter. Small mercies from his older brother.

Mylorah kept glancing at their baby girls as Tazikel gave a brief rundown of how the talk with his father went. It was becoming clear that Seravath either wanted the stick back or a chance to share but it seemed the little green agreed with Mylorah that just asking might be tricky. Amagrith was a darling but she had a lot of gold attitude that could appear as well. So how did she bring it up without causing any sort of scene? "Amagrith?" She smiled and pointed at her head when the gold looked her way and then thought about a time as a kid that saw R'dare hand out a couple little dolls that his mom had made with scraps of fabric and their little group playing and passing them around. Mylorah felt Amagrith's confusion turn to understanding and excitement and she smiled when the stick was repositioned so that each young lady could chew an end without too much issue. She had a few minutes alone with it and now she could learn the joy of sharing.

That settled, her attention was fully back on Tazikel and her mission to cheer him up again. "I don't think your mother dislikes me so let her know I will keep an eye on you and your virtue." She knew she wouldn't have much influence as a goldrider but the little she would gain combined with trying to be nice to everyone over the years might sway enough to leave her greenrider boyfriend alone. But that would also depend on what the future held since they were still so early into their weyrlinghood.

Thinking too much on that had emotions springing up that were better left untouched--for Amagrith's benefit, of course--and Mylorah smiled at the thought of letter writing. "V'ra would be grumpy about paper because her mate is Harper trained and he's always writing and composing things so she might have to take from his pile." Probably not, since she was certain the Weyr had a little supply outside of an introverted bluerider's hoard. Still, it was a funny image and Mylorah shared it aloud for them all, describing V'ra sneaking in and quietly rolling up sheets and tucking them in her shirt before tiptoing away again.

"But I wouldn't mind helping you write letters," she offered once the giggles had passed. They wrote to each other at times in between getting to see each other again and she always enjoyed it. People always complimented her penmanship as well so it wasn't like anyone would receive anything illegible. "But maybe just a letter to your mother for now. You can also make Yfris do some work and write letters on your behalf. His job is Weyr-Hold relations or something like that. He can let everyone know I finally corrupted you and you ran away and became a fabulous dragonrider. So many will be jealous."

Seravath chirped in delight when Amagrith offered her one end of the stick back, plopping down immediately to claim it with a quiet chant of Stick stick stick stick stick. Z’kel smiled at Mylorah. Whatever she’d said to—thought at?— Amagrith had worked, and now they didn’t have to worry about a sibling spat over a stick breaking out. Or at least didn’t have to worry for a little while, Z’kel was finding dragonet moods could be highly unpredictable and he was embarrassingly weak to even the slightest hint of distress from Seravath.

Mylo’s offer of reassurance for his mother was appreciated, but Z’kel didn’t think he’d end up passing it on. His mother didn’t dislike Mylorah, but Z’kel knew she wouldn’t put much stock in a Weyr girl’s promise to protect her son, especially if she was already worked up about his well-being. Though the thought of Mylorah ‘keeping an eye on his virtue’ may make her laugh hard enough she’d forget she was worried for a few minutes. The image of the grumpy weyrlingmaster sneaking around to steal paper was also funny, and Z’kel grinned at Mylorah’s overly dramatized description.

“You can help me draft them,” Z’kel agreed. “I don’t think my family would appreciate letters not in my handwriting, though, pretty as yours is, and I’m not bothering to write to anyone else. You can include a letter of your own to Theri, if you like, she’d probably appreciate that.” Itherida liked Mylo, probably more than any of the rest of his family, and she’d definitely appreciate whatever—information? Reassurances?—Mylo could offer her when it came to the whole situation of him Impressing.

“I’m sure Yfris has already sent all the letters he needs or wants to send about how I’ve been corrupted to your side. It’ll be the talk of plenty of dinner parties for a while, certainly. Lord Tillek’s son, seduced to the Weyrs and stolen away from his good Holder family, and by a green dragon no less.” Z’kel laughed, and it only came out a little harsher than he intended.

Because he didn’t blame Seravath, or Mylorah. It wasn’t as if he hadn’t fantasized about Impressing a dragon—though he couldn’t claim to have ever pictured a green in any of the vague fantasies—and getting to stay with Mylo and never marry and avoid responsibility. Tazi just hadn’t realized how suddenly and thoroughly doing so would rip him from his old life and change it irrevocably. He often talked about how annoying members of his family were, but it felt like he’d lost them in a very permanent way. He’d see them all again, sure, but it would never be the same.

And there was very little any of them could do about it, just wait for things to play out.

Z’kel sighed, throwing caution to the wind and pressing his cheek against Mylorah’s hair.

“You’d better take care of your poor, corrupted lordling, Mylo, or my mother may be right and the Weyrs will eat me alive.” He shifted his head to place a brief, chaste kiss on her hair. “You’ll only eat me alive in the fun ways,” he added, trying to bring the mood back up.

Tazikel was sweet with his effort to make her feel better about how bad her offer was. Of course his family would know his handwriting and of course they wouldn't want something from her, even if she started off with 'as dictated by'. They likely still wouldn't believe it and would accuse her of making everything up because lying and deceiving was right up there with whoring when it came to what was believed about the weyrbred. But she did like the idea of writing to Itherida herself and was disappointed in herself for not thinking to do such a thing sooner. She could check in with the woman, letting her know she would like to keep in touch, and update her on Tazikel's progress into becoming Z'kel.

"I promise to take care of you, sir Tazicurls," and she meant it. No matter how much he had indulged her over the years by listening to stories and learning more about the Weyrs--partly in exchange for her learning more about the Holds--Mylorah did worry he'd end up in various forms of trouble once they were allowed more freedom. Even if he Impressed a bronze, she still would worry for her lordling. It was a whole new way of life with new rules and a very different position from second son of a major Hold. She would help him in all ways, however she could, as long as he would let her.

She watched the dragonets getting along so well and smiled at how cute they were. Seravath was also such a sweetheart and Mylorah couldn't imagine what weyrlinghood would be like without her or Tazikel. She knew she would survive it just fine and would never know this moment if it didn't happen but it made her sad to think of that sad reality. A little sigh escaped before she gave a good overhead stretch of her arms. A shoulder was starting to feel a little stiff and maybe itchy so her cream puff was due another oiling. Mylorah almost reached for the bucket and rags but stopped and threw her arms around Tazikel once more.

"I'm so glad you're here," she whispered the words, too afraid to say them any louder as the truth kind of scared her and she didn't need to make it any realer than it was. It was also too close to strong affection and Amagrith stopped chewing on the stick to turn her curious gaze on the humans. Quickly, before any tantrums started, Mylorah tossed out, "hugs are good for greetings but sometimes hugs show everyone how happy you are. It's like when you join a cuddle puddle with your siblings and you're so content."

Amagrith seemed to consider this for a moment and then stood, leaving Seravath and the stick behind. Mylorah held her breath but the eyes didn't change colour and it seemed the gold accepted the explanation as she nodded, took a few steps closer, and then flopped down so her side was pressed up against Z'kel. "She doesn't just flop for anyone, you know. I think she likes you." He's all right.

Z’kel smiled at Mylorah’s pronouncement that she’d take care of him. His mother may not believe it, but Tazi was fairly confident Mylorah could steer him through the worst of the trouble he could fall into as a new dragonrider. At the very least, she’d be there for him if things went sideways, and that meant a lot too.

“I’m glad I’m here too,” Tazi whispered back. He wasn’t sure if Mylo caught it, because she started reassuring Amagrith that hugs were totally normal and casual immediately after he said it, but he hoped she had. He meant it, and it would probably be good for her to hear from him, too. He’d have to say it more often, maybe, because even though he fully meant and believed it, there were still a bit of panic that lived in the back of his head and needed to be kept subdued.

It was terribly cute how Mylorah explained things to Amagrith, and Z’kel held his breath when the gold flopped against his leg, as if inhaling would somehow disturb her. As soon as she spoke, though, to claim he was “alright,” he laughed. Seravath looked up from the stick at the noise and Tazi felt the impression of a frown in his mind, though he wasn’t sure dragons were properly capable of frowning. Either way, Seravath trotted over and flopped pointedly on the other side of Z’kel. Just cause she wanted to. Obviously.

“Well, I hope I can live up to Lady Amagrith’s high standards for me,” he said, giving Amagrith one of his more charming smiles while simultaneously scratching behind the little horn knobs on Seravath’s head so she’d know he was only playing a game and that her standards obviously mattered most. His words were silly, but Z’kel did want Amagrith to like him—if for purely selfish reasons.

Dragonets really were too funny, though. Tazi had never realized how silly dragons could be, even with Mylorah’s stories. It was deeply endearing.

“Would you like to use me as a pillow too, dear Lady? The other ladies appear to find me a sufficient cushion, if further sharing is acceptable to them.” He made sure to include the easy out, in case either dragon decided she did not want to entertain further sharing of one of them.

“Always, sir Tazicurls,” Mylorah didn’t hesitate with her answer, even if they were all being a little silly that afternoon. She was playing along but also serious. She thought she had caught Tazikel saying he was also happy he was there but it had been so softly spoken whole the dragons did their own thing that she started to doubt it. But silly or serious, she took the invitation as a good sign and Mylorah easily shifted to lie on the ground with her head in her knight’s lap.

Amagrith scooted up a little so she could stay pressed to Z’kel’s side while also resting her head on Mylorah’s chest. You can join me, Seravath. Mylorah is very nice to have naps on. Mylorah laughed and sighed at their antics that possibly had her equating to a delicious stick to be shared. They were going to end up in a contorted pile soon but as long as she got to enjoy a little dragon-approved snuggle, she’d let six dragonets try to nap on her.

She silently reached out a hand to take Z’kel’s as she was being a little selfish and wanted a little more contact. It was the most they could do for another two months. That time would be spent making sure Amagrith adored her men as much as she did and would be fine with more skin on skin contact. A little smile up at Z’kel was all that gave away her devious plotting.

Seravath thanked her sister with a quiet chirp and gave Mylorah a good once over to assess for the best place to lay her head. She debated using Mylorah’s stomach for a minute, but concluded that was possibly too close to Amagrith and would be crowding, so she settled on Mylorah’s thighs instead, resting her chin gingerly across them, moving slowly so she could snap her head back to safety if at any point Amagrith rescinded the invitation. The gold did not, so Seravath happily rested her head on the new deluxe pillow.

Z’kel smiled back at Mylorah, and gave her hand a quick squeeze back. He could tell she was thinking something, and he could guess the direction they went in, but he put a stop to those thoughts before he could follow them all the way to their conclusion. He didn’t want to disturb the girls after they had settled down, after all.
