Chirp trilled in protest as she fought to cling to her boy's shoulders. Her tail wrapped firmly around his arm even as her nails dug into the tender skin along the back of his neck. Despite the pinpricks, Chir didn't slow as he raced through the Weyr with determination. The young hunter dodged and weaved through the throngs of people leaving the dining halls with a piece of paper clutched and crumpled in hand.

Spotting his intended target, Chironhes ran faster to catch up with him before he could disappear. S'far was always so busy, no doubt more so since the news of all the attacks from Benden Weyr. Chir had spent more than a few restless nights since, in no small part thanks to his roommate who was still visiting there. While Chir wished fervently for Sironar to return home safely, he understood being there was important to the other boy.

His wish for the Weyrleader's attention was strong enough that Chirp took it upon herself to cry out above the din of the dispersing crowd to catch his attention. The green flitter sat taller upon her boy's shoulder with pride when they were gifted with S'far's gaze.

Chir stumbled to a stop in front of the man and bent double to pant. He'd rushed through the early morning turnout of the horses and a shower to have time to write the few words on the page. Still catching his breath, the boy thrust the crumpled page into S'far's hands.

[How make dragon oil?] the note read in carefully written script. Chir's word choice was limited by what he knew, but he thought he'd managed well enough while using words he'd picked out from Sironar's letters. [Want keep dragons safe. Hunt tree? Plant? Hunt game for food?] The boy knew his skills were limited, but after hearing of so many attacks, he could do little more than worry and worry over the dragons he'd befriended. Even K'dar and Tiberuth had fallen victim only a day after meeting the pair! Despite his lack of training and his sparse experience with any real fighting, the mute boy knew he wanted to learn so he could protect those he cared about.

If he could find the supplies himself and make it all from start to finish, and even hand-deliver things like fresh game or dragon oil, then he could know for certain no one could tamper with them and poison or hurt his friends. It was far from efficient, but it was all the freckled youth could come up with.

So much to do and he was shorthanded. What had been a temporary leave to be with possibly dying siblings had turned into K'dar possibly dying himself. T'ryn was back and forth between Benden and Telgar, but when he was back he was stressed and fussing over his mate who was probably having flashbacks to her own attack. At least the two of them enjoyed work as a distraction from stress. So he had an order in with Cazan for a new jacket for Mulrissa, and had T'ryn working on trying to forecast how large Malvayth's next clutch could potentially be based on her past trends, along with coming up with potential wing compositions for the weyrlings to test out.

And then a green firelizard was fluttering about being a menace, and as he shooed her away he got the sense that someone was trying to get his attention. He paused and turned and spotted Chironhes running his way. Huh. He at least stepped off to the side while he waited for the boy to catch up, head tilting curiously. Old man, are you still annoyed with Chir? Who? It wasn't so much the question the dragon asked as the tone and emotion that accompanied the word that let S'far know the dragon was most certainly still ignoring the boy. Ah well. He could always commandeer someone else's dragon for translation service if required.

But then the boy shoved a crumpled note into his hand and S'far smoothed it out to read. "Well would you look at this! Your handwriting has gotten so much better from those early tries I saw. That "L" in "oil" is very clean, not shaky at all. Good job! Pity you had to crumple the sheet." He had a feeling that praise over penmanship was not what the boy as looking for at all though, so he gestured for Chir to follow along. "Come on, let's get out of the way at least." He headed out to the bowl, to his little garden that was partially surrounded by a picket fence with a stone paved path neatly cutting through it.

"So. I'm going to weed, but it doesn't mean I'm ignoring you. And stay off the grass. And also the dirt. Just stay on the path." S'far knelt down and started to pluck away at the pesky weeds, passing them over to Chir to hold onto. "Just hold onto those, shove them in your pockets, doesn't matter. Anyway, I imagine your note has something to do with what happened to K'dar. And oil confess, it's a bit more complicated than that. Making it oil by yourself would not be something I recommend as a long term defense measure, because something can still happen, someone can still tamper while it's in storage. Which means whoever is doing this really has us over a barrel, in quite a pickle as it were."

He could feel Urudith's disdain for his puns all the way from the ledge he was lounging on. S'far stood up and walked over to his tomatoes to check if anything needed to be picked just yet before he continued. "No one likes to think they can do nothing, but it's foolish to try and beat yourself up over this too. So, we look into alternatives. I'm not sure if whatever poison was used can be neutralized to make the oil safe again, and you don't seem to be the sort to figure that out either. But maybe we can figure out some way to test it more safely than just shoving hands into it like I heard the weyrlingmaster did over in Benden."

Though earning S'far's praise hadn't been his intention with his letter, Chironhes felt pride swell in his chest at it all the same. He really was working hard with it, even if he felt like his progress was slow. The Weyrleader's praise reminded him he'd only been at it for not even a month yet.

Like a puppy, the boy trotted after S'far as he led the way to the bowl and a quaint, well-tended garden. He nodded his understanding and stood patiently on the path while the man knelt to tug at weeds. Happy to be of some use, even in such a small capacity, the hunter accepted each clump of weeds without complaint.

His smile over the recent praise sobered into a sorrowful nod. Even without a dragon as an interpreter, Chir excelled at communicating with his facial expressions. He was the kind to wear his emotions all over his face. The mention of K'dar's attack had shaken him more than he wanted to admit, but his concerns were clear enough considering he'd put forth so much effort with his writing.

The sorrow gave way to a shake of the boy's head and a roll of his eyes, a smile sneaking its way onto his face just as he suspected S'far intended. His puns were stupid, but they did have a way of bringing levity to tough subjects.

As S'far continued, Chir brightened. He did actually have an idea! Bending down to pile the weeds at his feet, Chir tugged at a boarskin pouch he used to keep treats on hand for Chirp. Upon seeing him reach for it, the little green fire lizard squealed with delight and raced down his arm to nudge at the pouch. The boy pulled out a dried bit of jerky for his pet before holding the pouch out to S'far in offering. Chir tugged the small jar of dragon oil from his pocket that he kept on hand for Chirp and wrestled it open to obtain a small amount. Reaching out, he swiped it across the pouch so S'far could see. If it was going to burn, it would do it against skins and hides. Granted, Chir already knew this jar was safe considering he'd been stretching out the same one Sironar had given him since Chirp's hatchdate, but he hoped it got his point across enough. At least for burns, the flesh didn't have to be alive. And the hunter could provide plenty of those given a few hunting trips away from working in the stables.

After a few more pulled weeds and a single ripe tomato, S'far glanced up to see what Chir was going on about. He tilted his head as he watched the boy grab a pouch and then dip it in a jar of oil. "Interesting. So you think the leather could work. I suppose it is skin. Or used to be. I'm not sure if the tanning process would make it react differently to whatever that poison was, but getting some hide and leaving it untreated but dry could still work."

He chuckled and stood up, reaching out to slap Chir firmly on the back after handing him the last of the weeds, tomato still carefully clutched in his other hand. "See, much easier than trying to become a one man oil supplier. Sometimes we have to take a step back from our own initial impulses, take a moment and consider options and how feasible they are. I'm glad that you're wanting to help though." He hadn't even realized that the young man had met K'dar yet, though he wasn't too surprised. The two had some similarities after all, they enjoyed the outdoors, and both seemed to have a protective streak.

Hopefully that wouldn't get either of them killed. A mottled green firelizard popped into view, carefully landing on a nearby fencepost as it chirped and trilled. "If you don't have a letter for me, go on then. Shoo." It promptly flew off, and an image of squash filled his head. "Oh, right I was going to clear the other row for squash... come on, Chir. You can help with that. Oh and... hm. Maybe I can deliver this tomato to Mul-" the flitter popped back in and chirped. "Ah, never mind." He held the tomato out to the green who very carefully took it before disappearing again.

With that out of the way he headed to where he stored his gardening tools and supplies, grabbing a hoe, shovel, and little jar of labeled seeds. "Have you ever had a garden before? Sironar's mother had one, it was quite handy while we were in exile." S'far took a moment to show Chir how to get the earth turned and prepared for the row before handing the tools over and letting the boy handle the rest of it. "It's dirty work, but good for relaxing. Plant your bullshit in the ground to fertilize the plants. Was there anything else you wanted to try and learn to do in the Weyr? Any goals you've discovered for yourself?" He'd had some time to research the boy and discovered that Chironhes really didn't have much of anything back in his Hold, but maybe since relocating to the Weyr he'd picked up a few new interests. "See if you can write it in the dirt. If not I'll figure some way to interpret I'm sure."

Clutching the weeds to his belly, Chir felt his heart clench as S'far clapped him on the back. He hoped his roommate knew how lucky he was to have a pretty great dad. The Weyrleader listened and paid attention. More than that, he cared. The young hunter had never met a more capable leader, even if his initial meeting had left them on uncertain grounds.

On the boy's shoulder, Chirp perked up as another green firelizard appeared. The young hatchling called out her own series of chirps and trills in greeting before it was shooed away. She turned to pin S'far with a glare at sending a potential friend away, but perked right back up when it returned for his tomato. Chir gave his little one a mental warning not to cause trouble and was rewarded when she settled back down with a huff and snuggled against his neck. The pair had been inseparable since her hatching, and Chir found her presence even more of a comfort in the absence of his roommate.

Chir accompanied S'far to his shed and helped him carry the tools back to the little garden. He shook his head as he admitted to not having managed one before. The forest had been his garden and he'd simply cultivated what grew there naturally. He cocked his head questioningly when S'far mentioned he and his family had been in exile previously. For what? The question came to mind immediately, though it was a good thing Urudith spent so much time pretending he didn't exist as Chir bet it would be offensive in some manner. He managed to keep most of the curiosity from his face and turned his attention to the work at hand.

The freckled boy certainly didn't mind getting dirty. Considering his previous way of life involved skinning and curing hides, playing in the dirt was a welcome task. He considered S'far questions as he used the hoe to break up garden soil.

Goals? He'd had a few already set out for him; learning to read and write, attempt to Impress a dragon. Those all seemed expected of him, whether anyone said it outright or not. Thankfully, he didn't mind the more freedoms all of those goals would grant him. He'd seen the ways B'jin found to communicate that didn't rely on Larrikith or another dragon like Chir himself so often did. Being able to stand on one's own was important to the boy.

But there were other things he enjoyed as well. Aside from grooming dragons, taking care of the horses was easily the first that came to mind. He'd even seen the stablemaster training a few yearlings a few days ago, and he'd been enthralled by the process. From what he'd observed, having a voice didn't even seem necessary. On his own, Chir had been practicing various whistles and tongue clicks to mimic those he'd heard during training.

After he'd finished the row S'far had started for him, Chir bent down into the loamy soil to use his finger to write out carefully drawn letters. "Horse training + riding." After another moment, he smiled and added another word that had nothing to do with either. "Flying." K'dar and Tiberuth taking him on that trip around the Weyr had left a lasting impact. But since the last word wasn't really a goal and more just something he truly enjoyed, he leaned back to think of another before settling on, "Help." Chir wanted to help in whatever capacity he could. If it meant guarding the Weyr or washing dishes or changing bedpans in the infirmary, he would do it.

S'far watched as Chir got the row dug out and turned, occasionally pointing out when the boy needed to break a piece of earth down a bit more or leaning down to grab a stone to toss to the side into a neat little pile. So far so good, and with much less personal effort than normally required! Too bad Sironar knew better than to randomly stop by while he was gardening or he'd get more labor out of the boy. That was fine though, there were plenty of other people who randomly stopped by to help and ask him questions, and even when there weren't he really didn't mind doing the work himself.

With a new pile of stones collected for him to sort through later and Chir done with getting the row dug, S'far took a step closer to see what it was the boy was writing bout. "Horses, eh? They're fine enough beasts I suppose, I just very quickly stopped caring about them as soon as I had the Old Man. If you manage to Impress you might not have much time for other creatures, if your dragon tolerates them." He glanced up at the goung green firelizard perched on the boys shoulders and added, "Flitters are generally easy to care for and are usually good about not competing with a dragon for attention. My boy's green did just fine after all."

He frowned, brow furrowed for a moment as he was lost in an old memory, but it didn't last long before S'far shook his head and pulled out the small jar of seeds. "If you want to fly you'll have to Stand at clutches, and for that you'll need to be in the good graces of the Candidatemaster. So be sure to behave, do your chores, pay attention to lessons, and don't ignore curfews once the eggs are on the sands."

After a few jabs in the dirt with a finger, S'far started planting his seeds. Old man, some watering would be appreciated. He knew the dragon was letting out a grumble on his ledge before he took off, gliding down easily to the lake to fill his mouth with water before walking the rest of the way to the garden. S'far moved out of the way, gently grabbing onto a corner of Chir's shirt to pull him along with as the bronze let out a spray of water onto the freshly tilled and planted row. "Thanks, old man. That should be good for now." The bronze offered a low crackling growl of acknowledgement before making his way back to the lake for a soak.

Stretching enough to get a few cracks out of his back, S'far turned to Chir. "Just need to put up the tools and that's that for the garden. Keep up with the chores, learn as much as you can, and that should be a good start to helping out. If I can think of anything else more specific for you I'll let you know. But, was there anything else you wanted from me?"

Chironhes found himself smiling at S'far's comments. There must be something in the water. Something about dragons, their riders, and horses that caused such a disconnect. They were beautiful animals! He didn't see why more didn't like them. Even if he did Impress, Chir vowed to make time for the things he loved, horses included!

Granted, he loved Chirp a lot, too! She was a breeze to care for, and the boy found her constant comfort to be a balm. Since her arrival, he'd not found reason to feel lonely even with Sironar gone for now. Feeling her boy thinking of him, Chirp trilled brightly and nuzzled against his cheek, drawing a full grin from him.

Though, the more he thought about S'far's comment, the duller the grin grew and the more confused he became. Green? Fancy Lad was blue... And he didn't have a dragon to compete with. Tilting his head, he glanced at S'far questioningly only to note the frown on the Weyrleader's face. There was a touch of something familiar in his expression. Something heart-deep and aching, buried, but ever-present. Grief?

But before Chir could even think of how to ask about it, S'far seemed to shake himself out of the feeling and return to talking about dragons. The boy's smile returned and he nodded. He thought he was behaving pretty well! Even if he was slow to learn some things, he still tried hard and there were compliments on the progress he was making. And considering the majority of his chores were in the stables, he was really excelling there!

Chir glanced up when the sun caught on Urudith's hide. He stood up a little straighter, hopeful still to catch the dragon's notice and have a chance to mend fences.

Hello, Urudith, he tried greeting even as S'far tugged him gently out of the way of the dragon's task. It was no surprise when he was subsequently ignored and Chir battled back the disappointment. The bronze could really hold a grudge, couldn't he?

S'far's question pulled his attention away from the retreating dragon and he held up his finger suddenly with a soft gasp of memory. Bending back to the dirt again, he carefully wrote out his request.

"I go hunt?" He started to write Malvayth's name before getting lost in the letters and scratching out all but Mal. "Mal want gold wherry." Still crouched down in the dirt, he tilted his head back to get a reading from S'far to see if his written words even made sense.

S'far didn't bother to ask his dragon if he was going to continue to be stubborn about ignoring Chironhes; he already knew the answer after all. He took the hoe to gently make sure his freshly water seeds were still covered in enough dirt, gently nudged the row in a few spots to straighten it up even more. He didn't need to do this, but it was nice to fuss a little bit. He noticed the boy quietly writing, but kept going until he was sure the boy was done and then walked over to get a better look.

"Hunting, Mal, gold..." his voice trailed off as he raised an eyebrow. Wanting a bit longer to mull things over he decided to distract for a moment, kneeling down to drag his own finger in the dirt nearby. "If you're talking about Malvayth, here's how you spell her name. It's polite to refer to them by their full names, and it lets everyone know you're talking about a dragon as well since we try to avoid any other names ending in th to try and honor them. Go ahead and give it a few tries."

He waited until the boy had gotten the dragon's name down a few more times and then nodded. "Good job!" S'far gave Chir a slap on the back. "See, you'll get the hang of things soon enough. Now then, you're asking if you can go hunting for Malvayth because she wants a golden wherry?" Once the boy was done with his nodding S'far nodded as well. "It'll be a difficult hunt, golden wherries are quite rare and reclusive. I've always found the best time to go after them is deep in winter when they're too heavy with eggs to fly. I wouldn't go alone though, not in these mountains. You'll want to stick to the trees, where the snow can't get too deep, and you'll need to wait for night. They don't like to come out during the day, but on a night that's dim you might be able to spot them darting between the trees. They're very crafty, very elusive, and not as big as you'd think. You don't want to shoot it, too much of a chance you'll ruin its hide and meat, but you can chase them out of the shelter of the forest and try to get them with a net when they get stuck in a snowdrift. It's much easier to catch a golden wherry with a proper hunting party."

Oh... Embarrassed at the blunder, the boy flushed crimson and dutifully bent to copy S'far's letters to complete Malvayth's name. He erased it and wrote it again several times to commit it to memory, able to complete it much faster each time. Chir had a talent for muscle memory, and he was realizing much of his writing relied on it. It was all about repetition for him and some words clicked easier than others.

He beamed with pride at S'far's praise and looked down to admire his work with a nod of satisfaction. When the Weyrleader summarized his goal, Chir sat back and nodded seriously. It was nice that S'far caught on to his half-managed writings so well! Maybe he'd heard the golden dragon singing about it at some point and made the connection. Malvayth seemed terribly excited about it all.

Upon hearing S'far's advice, Chir took careful mental notes to share all of it with Malvayth. Cazan had been mistaken after all! Golden wherries did exist! They were as rare as the boy suspected. But he wouldn't be able to manage it alone, according to S'far. Chir still struggled to grow comfortable enough to mingle readily with the other candidates, still very much feeling like an outsider. With Sironar still in Benden, the young hunter had happily kept to himself and focused on caring for the horses in the stables, Chirp, and working on his lessons in private.

"Must be patient?" he wrote out in summary. Winter was a ways off now. While he would have much preferred to go now while the thrill of the hunt burned in his veins, he also knew that one had to plan for a hunt properly and not just go willy-nilly. Accepting this change, he considered it before adding another option. "Boar still okay I hunt?"

Chir still struggled with using proper grammar in his writings as the smaller words seemed superfluous to him when less would get the same intent across, but when he read his own words back to himself in his head, he knew it was wrong while also being what he wanted to communicate.

S'far was pleased that this was going well and that the young man seemed quite keen on the idea. He'd have to talk to a few people to spread the idea around, most notably the candidate master and weyrling master. Dragonets might be small enough to participate in such a hunt in the forest, and it could be a fun team building exercise. He'd explore that possibility a little later.

For now he nodded. "Yes, patience is important." The question about going boar hunting made him frown though and he sighed. "As much as I love to hunt and know you love to hunt, I'd be more comfortable if you stayed in the Weyr for now, at least until K'dar gets back and recovers. I'm not confident enough that the attacks will stay isolated to Benden. I'm not putting Telgar under lockdown yet, but..." he sighed and shook his head as he realized that his hands had begun to tremble again. That made him force a small chuckle and he held them up. "Well last year when things like this started to happen I was badly poisoned. I still get tremors on occasion. I'm sure the headache will start up soon enough, I usually get one after a tremor spell."

That was enough to make the bronze get up out of the water and shake himself off as he made his way back to the garden wordlessly. He laid down just on the other side of the fence, leaving enough room for S'far to easily climb over it rather than go around and take the path so that he could just sit down on the ground and lean back against his dragon's side. "Thanks, Old Man. Sorry about interrupting your bath." Urudith snorted. Nonsense. Even the boy's presence, as offensive as he found it, couldn't keep him away.

"So anyway," S'far said as the first pulse of a headache started and made him whince, "I'm not telling you not to go hunting, but I'd at least like you to wait until K'dar is back and better. Though once Malvayth clutches I'm sure the candidate master will have you in even more classes to make sure you're as prepared as you can be to stand. Hopefully K'dar is back soon..." hopefully he survived, but he wasn't going to add that part aloud.

Chir sensed the 'no' before S'far even gave the reply based on his sigh. The freckled teen stamped down his disappointment fiercely as he listened to the Weyrleader carefully. It was...unnerving to hear that S'far was concerned those attacks in Benden could spread here. Which brought the argument to mind that it would be safer outside the Weyrs and in the wilds if such attacks were focused in places like this, but he also didn't want to point out the flaw there and give S'far more to worry about when he clearly had enough weight on his shoulders as it was. He'd have to find something else to occupy his free time.

Chir turned to see Urudith approach once more and settle nearby. Despite the dragon's distaste for him, the boy smiled to see him concerned enough for his rider to return to his side. It was a wholesome, kind action, and he wondered if Urudith knew the significance of it. He must, surely. Small things were really the big things.

The boy nodded again to S'far when he requested he stay at least until K'dar returned. Chir had since learned K'dar's importance to the Weyr since meeting him, and he could see the strain his attack was causing. Hoping to offer some comfort, no matter how small, the boy stepped forward to set a hand along S'far's forearm. Of course, K'dar was coming home soon. He'd be right as rain before they all knew it!
